I think M&S have improved a lot lately. I can always find something.

Regarding natural fibres, I don’t get the obsession. A well made item in a good man made fibre (viscose, etc ) can be just as nice a silk and I find leather and linen alternatives nicer to wear than the real thing but cotton and wool alternatives are , I agree , never as good

Viscose is a fibre from a natural source (wood pulp). The problem is fabric made from crude oil i.e polyester and nylon.

Yeah, nah

Viscose is incredibly damaging to the workers who produce and process it and the environment

Material Guide: What is Viscose and Is It Sustainable? - Good On You

Viscose is made from wood pulp, but does that mean it's sustainable? It's complicated. Our guide explains, plus the alternatives to viscose.

I didn’t say it didn’t have issues, just that it is a natural fibre. Some of the processing is a problem unless you buy Oeco Tex.

I can remember when Finery London first started and I got some lovely bits. Then it relaunched and was awful.

I’ve got some lovely Finery London dresses from the very early days, such a shame its changed.

Celtic since they started having their boots made in Portugal. I used to buy at least one pair of their sheepskin slipper boots or outdoor boots every year but the quality is so appalling now that I haven’t bought anything from them for five years now after having to return two pairs of shoes with faulty soles in a row.

I do! I think you had to pay for them.....£2.00, perhaps?
Worth it.
I remember when they started selling home and garden items, including beautiful rose plants.

The first Next Directory was released in 1988 and it cost £3.00

Far too much man made patterned crap now.
All mass produced.
All sweat inducing.
Although I do think women are voting with their feet and refusing to buy certain products.
For example I will only buy big, plain, cotton knickers in either nude, black or white.
The days of me buying scratchy, lacey knickers which ride up my crack are long gone.

Yes! I saw some Brazilian knickers in M&S Sale. They were pretty. Cotton. Generously cut, shall we say! But my right mind kicked in & told me I’d never wear them… Big pants all the way! I used to do the three thongs deal at Miss Selfridge, that was a long time ago.

I miss department stores. House of Fraser and Debehams.
It used to be a treat to have lunch in House of Frasers. Ours had a proper restaurant, a cafe, and I think a coffee shop. The restaurant had waitress service. It was posh. Eventually, it became self service, the quality went down, the prices went up. People stopped using it.

Other brands which disappeared during covid all belonged to the same company. I am laughing looking back at them: Eastex, a little old lady brand, worn by my mother; jacques vert - a wedding guest, mother of the bride brand; windsmoor; precis petite, which i used to wear, it fitted; planet -which I think was an office wear type brand.

justasking111 · 07/08/2026 08:29

OH I miss Windsmoor, but it would probably be rubbish now 😔

Kettlewell is in cahoots with Celtic and it reeks of desperation from both companies.

BestIsWest · 07/08/2026 10:43

I loved Planet back in the 90s. Kaliko was the same company I think.

SerafinasGoose · 07/08/2026 10:52

DMs are also abysmal now. I've switched to Solovair and Lanx boots and never looked back.

Up until a couple of years ago Kettlewell was excellent, and I bought many of my tops from there. Now I can find very little I want and there is an almost permanent sale. It’s so sad.

thenightsky · 07/08/2026 13:15

I miss Long Tall Sally. Now its owned by Yours Clothing its absolute rubbish.

You think Celtic slippers are bad ugg are even worse.

KitsyWitsy · 07/08/2026 14:51

Monsoon. I used to spend a fortune in there but not bought anything for at least ten years. I liked the smart boho vibes. I buy almost all my clothes in America now.

NorthboundEcho · 07/08/2026 16:38

Accessorize. I used to love buying a new pair of earrings in there, but they all look super cheap now and fall to bits
