Swimsuit for chubby apple shape

PrincessOfPreschool · 05/07/2026 22:04

Dreading summer hols. Had lots on and no time to focus on losing weight or exercising. I'm a 14-16 apple shape. I look really awful in those supposedly 'shaping' swimsuits with the ruching. Does anyone have a flattering swimsuit recommendation?

100% recommend these, I have this one amd its lovely but there are loads of options https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0BKKV2GZF?psc=1&ref=ppxpopmobbasintitle

What about lined swim shorts ( they look like shorts- they’re not tight), and a swim tank top? Like, separates.

I got a lovely White Stuff swimsuit in the John Lewis sale, think it’s called splash, I’m an apple and it’s flattering

Ibwah · 05/07/2026 22:20

Following because I am also a size 14-16 apple and most swimsuits give pregnancy vibes! So much so that I was questioned whether I should be in a sauna in my condition. (Not pregnant)

DelphiniumBlue · 05/07/2026 22:24

Something like this would be flattering: this one is from Accessorize

Thanks for the tip- I’ve just ordered the blue on in the sale!

This one is on the M&S site
This is the Accessorize one

How do you feel about 'control'? Underwire? Personally I find both uncomfortable in the heat, but you might find them OK. But the style of halterneck with a contrasting panel under the bust is very flattering on an apple shape. If you are well-endowed, focus the attention there rather on the tummy area.
I think the skirted swimsuits just draw attention to the fact that you think you have something to hide ( which at a 14-16, you certainly don't). Not that anyone of any size needs to hide away.

Are you looking for something to go swimming in, or something to wear for lying around in?

Tbanksy · 06/07/2026 05:15

I am a size 16 and this retro bikini from Amazon is so flattering. I've had compliments when wearing it and I never get compliments on swimwear anymore 😉 😂 Amazon

Swimsuit and some board shorts? Takes the attention away from your middle?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 06/07/2026 07:15

I'm a similar shape and find the expanse of swimsuit across my midriff unflattering. A bikini or tankini breaks it up and looks better in me.

That's what I bought a few weeks ago. Game changer. Yesterday going through clothes in the spare room I binned all my old swimwear.

Thanks for the tip- I’ve just ordered the blue on in the sale!

It's well-designed for slimming purposes because of the central panel being a different fabric.

I am that size and shape. The best swimsuits for me have always been one piece halter necks and solid colors - preferably dark, like navy blue, dark purple. I would say black but I'm so pale that a black swimsuit looks shocking. You may look better.

Blackbird2409 · 06/07/2026 12:50

Fantasie Twist front bikini and their full bottoms are an amazing fit 🙂🙏 Amazing control for bigger boobs. And cover and overhanging belly. I find them more flattering than swimsuits though Fantasie twist front swimsuits are great too.

Nothungrycat · 06/07/2026 13:12

Another apple here - I carry all my extra weight on my front! I went for a separate tankini top and briefs - one of the floatier tops from Lands End like this https://www.landsend.co.uk/Womens_Tulip_Hem_Tankini_Top/pp/P_43079.html?dwvar_P__43079_sizeVariation=59&dwvar_P__43079_color=HME&cgid=16104&pageType=fp Great for sitting around the pool, but less so for serious swimming as it sort of floats up!

Boden Mykonos or Arles, or anything with decent fabric and a deep V.

Don't try and cover yourself up with a tankini or a swimskirt or shorts, you will just draw more attention to yourself by looking like you're trying to cover up.

You are allowed to be an apple shaped whatever size you like, and wear a swimsuit, so find one you like that is stylish, not a granny cover up.

Landsend do some fantastic supportive ones that look good and that you can actually swim in. Carmela particularly good. Pricey, but they’re always offering discounts

PhilOPastry62 · 06/07/2026 17:23

I'm that shape, and Landsend Tugless range have always worked well for me. However they don't have as many to choose from as they used to, and not as many in dark colours, which is a pity.

Sulgari · 06/07/2026 17:41

Don’t wear anything peculiar, like a swim dress or board shorts or the like, you’ll just look odd

I am fat around the middle and in my fifties and infinitely prefer a bikini. The big pants retro ones just make me look like I’m Benny Hill dressed up as a lady, not the pin up look I’d hoped for. So just a normal bikini

I do like the bottoms that fold over

I’d look at Matalan, Next, Tesco, and River Island. And Brastop

PrincessOfPreschool · 06/07/2026 17:55

Thanks all. So many different ideas! I do have a bikini I wore last year but I was a bit slimmer and not even sure it still fits. I'm very small boned, so I have good legs but no bum or tummy muscles so look about 7 months pregnant! Going to Italy for first time and just worried I'll look awful. Boobs are decent - 36E - but obviously saggy now I'm mid 50s so I do like a bit of support to keep them up. Never tried the deep V shape, usually go more balcony.

Going to look up more of these now!!

Both. Won't be bothered to change in between.
