M&S sizing really off

Thisthreadhasbeendeleted · 25/06/2026 10:33

Do they read their own reviews? I've been looking at a few things recently and loads of the reviews highlight issues with sizing. Regular length trousers being far too long, loads of people needing to size up. I - so I imagine most people - used to have to size down in M&S (mostly jeans), now it seems they've swung too far in the other direction! Why haven't they taken notice and sorted it out?

i bought some lovely palazzo trousers from there in the week short length. They are way too long. I'm 5 foot 5 so in theory should wear regular length.

They are going back because I don't have the skill or inclination to turn them up.

You are not wrong OP.

I’m 5’6” and have had to buy short length in trousers recently. I still had to size down though.

HardFuckingBird · 25/06/2026 11:03

Their sizing is wildly inconsistent. I'm a size 8 in most shops but in certain M&S trouser styles if I don't size up they're uncomfortably tight. Yet a lot of their tops and blouses are massive and I have to size down. I'm 5'3" and find the leg length variable - I often have to get regular length rather than short, but I always have to try on as there's so much variation.

Thisthreadhasbeendeleted · 25/06/2026 11:10

I used to be a 10 -12 in jeans (now a 12-14) and had to go for an 8 in m&s. I wasn't even an 8 when I was a teen.
Lots of trouser reviews I'm looking at are saying the waist band is far too small, but then other items - coats, dresses - people are having to size down. At least they used to be consistently and predictably too big!
It just seems their sizing is really off now, and they're not fixing the issue.
I wish women's clothes were in inches, there's far too much ambiguity/room for maneuver with the current sizing system.

See, I'm 5'4" and my legs aren't particularly long, but I always go for a 32" leg, 31" just feels that wee bit too short, and a regular length in m&s used to do the job.

The trousers are way too long.

Having had overly generous sizing for many years, they are now reversing this, so many regular shoppers will need to buy a bigger size than they are used to.

It's not even that, it's the inconsistency of their own sizing now - having to size up in some things and size down in others. And if you're one size, for example a 10, in most other shops, a 10 in m&s should fit too, but now lots of people, if the reviews are to be believed, are having to size up in m&s

Ordered the crinkle summer trousers in short. (No extra short in stock). Just taken them to have them shortened by five inches. I’m 5’ 4”

Badbadbunny · 25/06/2026 13:08

Their sizings have been inconsistent for years, but definitely getting worse.

I've often bought say a pair of jeans or a t shirt, liked it, and got exactly the same in a different colour (same range, same stand/rack etc), and the size has been very different.

Once tried on some blue jeans, fitted fine, so went to buy them and thought I'd buy the black version too, same rack, same price, same range, etc., never thought I'd need to try them on too. When I got them home the leg length was about 2 inches longer and the waist a couple of inches smaller - I laid one pair over the other and the different in sizings was stark!

Their quality control etc is way off these days.

mixingplaydoh · 25/06/2026 13:08

Yep. I found the pintuck jeans too small this season and had to size up. Whereas I had to size down in some ballet flats. I’m a 5.5 and bought the 6, but then had to swap for the 5.

Thisisthedream · 25/06/2026 13:39

This season I have bought some Khaki wide leg linen trousers in a 12 regular and a blue striped pair of wide leg linen trousers in a 16 short. Both fit exactly the same. Make it make sense!

Doppe · 25/06/2026 13:52

I have a favourite skirt. It came from M&S absolutely years ago. The reason I love it is because its at least one size down from everything I've ever bought from anywhere else and it still fits. Reading this thread I dare not buy anything from M&S in the future in case their sizing has gone the other way - my self esteem wouldn't cope!

Yiayoula · 25/06/2026 13:57

@Badbadbunny - in total agreement with you .
I wonder why M & S are so reluctant to address these issues, surely they can’t be unaware of what their customers are feeding back to them ?

Purpleandping · 25/06/2026 14:00

I'm 5'7" and starting to find regular length trousers too long, not just in M&S. I think manufacturers have taken the fact that we're getting taller, as a population a little too much to heart. I used to have the opposite problem.

bananaapplepears · 25/06/2026 14:04

I asked an assistant in store about this last week and she said they were working their way back towards original sizing , so a size 8 would fit like a size 8 did years ago , rather than the vanity sizing they have been using more recently.

I wonder why they think that is a good idea? People are getting bigger over time and also tend to hate having to buy a bigger size in clothes! Seems like a bvad idea to me.

Thingamebobwotsit · 25/06/2026 14:52

You are right @Thisthreadhasbeendeleted I have ordered a fair few bits in recent months and now having to return more items than I keep because they simply don't fit. Bought a lovely looking, fitted shirt. Put it on and the waist was perfect, but the shoulders would have fitted the incredible hulk. Have also taken to ordering in multiple sizes for things I need urgently so I can send one lot back. Seems so unnecessary and not very environmentally friendly.

Norberta · 25/06/2026 14:56

Yes I have the same style of jeans in two colours both a size 10 one is super tight and the other fits fine. How?!

HiZev · 25/06/2026 15:03

The only trousers that are short enough for me (about 5') in Marks are the short version of their cropped trousers! They fit me as normal length.

Yeah it will take time for all the manufacturing to catch up with the new sizing.

What I really don’t understand from a financial perspective is the super long trouser length. All that wasted fabric.

Maybe they're going for the Dutch market.
I remember looking for jeans in TK Maxx & they were all really long. There's obviously less demand for super long bottoms, so yes, lots of waste

Last year everything was enormous, this year everything has gone down,it's ridiculous trying to buy on line.

RayonSunrise · 25/06/2026 16:13

I’ve not had any issues recently. 10L is my standard trouser size and it’s never not fit. My only sticking point is that I’m between sizes up top so I often have to make a guess at whether I’m better off sizing up or down.

CoCoJones26 · 25/06/2026 16:18

I'm 5' 8" and in the past have bought size 12 long jeans/ trousers. Recently I'm fitting 10 short/ regular in jeans and trousers....such a waste of time when ordering online....

hahabahbag · 25/06/2026 16:20

I had to buy short length jeans, I’m 5’6! The average height in the uk is 5’6 i should be regular length
