M&S sizing really off

Thisthreadhasbeendeleted · 25/06/2026 10:33

Do they read their own reviews? I've been looking at a few things recently and loads of the reviews highlight issues with sizing. Regular length trousers being far too long, loads of people needing to size up. I - so I imagine most people - used to have to size down in M&S (mostly jeans), now it seems they've swung too far in the other direction! Why haven't they taken notice and sorted it out?

I’m particularly annoyed by the message I get now from M&S when I start to return something online.

In short it says I’ve returned X% of the things I ordered recently, and directs me to check the measurement tables before I order.

As a pp says, you can buy the same garment in 2 colours and they will fit quite differently. How will comparing my measurements (or that of one of their other garments) to the table be any help in that situation? At least I own a tape measure, I know many people don’t.

I’m 5’ 4” tall. The short length in their trousers used to be just right for me. Now some of their extra short trousers can be too long.

Freda69 · 25/06/2026 16:26

I’m 5ft 1in and I’ve had to go from short to extra short. I’ve got several pairs of cords in size 12 and they vary from very tight to quite loose!

Their sizings have been inconsistent for years, but definitely getting worse.

I've often bought say a pair of jeans or a t shirt, liked it, and got exactly the same in a different colour (same range, same stand/rack etc), and the size has been very different.

Once tried on some blue jeans, fitted fine, so went to buy them and thought I'd buy the black version too, same rack, same price, same range, etc., never thought I'd need to try them on too. When I got them home the leg length was about 2 inches longer and the waist a couple of inches smaller - I laid one pair over the other and the different in sizings was stark!

Their quality control etc is way off these days.

I remember doing the same thing, getting the very same jeans, same size, name & fit (e.g. Sienna straight cut, regular length) in a different shade, & they were different sizes, so i checked the item code which was the very same apart from the last couple of digits indicating colour! So bloody annoying.

M&S are overall generous. Too long is someone else’s not long enough if they wear heels! I’ve had a too small denim blouse recently and a pair of jeans. The other jeans were spot on! It’s a bit hit and miss but I read reviews and choose accordingly. It’s not that difficult and we aren’t all the same shape!

I wonder why they think that is a good idea? People are getting bigger over time and also tend to hate having to buy a bigger size in clothes! Seems like a bvad idea to me.

I think we are in the time of ozempic and that trend is reversing now

I agree. Reordered the 100% exact same jeans and although the sizing was fairly similar the denim and shade was totally different 😂

dailychallenge · 26/06/2026 06:48

I tried a pair of jeans on in store and they were small made so sized up to a 14. Ordered a different colour of same jeans online. They arrived and the 14 is too big and also a fraction too short in the leg.

goingtotown · 26/06/2026 07:08

I don’t want to pay £15 to have trousers shortened.

Cloudconfusion · 26/06/2026 07:23

I’m also finding quality an issue as well. Things look fantastic on the website, but in real life they are cheaply made and cheap material

the sizing is also off, they were always over sized, and I think it’s right to correct that, but it appears to have went too far. I’m also an eight, I bought what looked to be lovely trousers on line, I got them and the waist was tight and the arse and hips absolutely massive, they looked appalling. Only a woman with a very inflated hour glass figure could have made them work, but more than the the quality was also crap.

IwanttoWFH · 26/06/2026 07:51

I was buying size six in trousers and shorts etc. Ordered a pair of shorts a few weeks ago and could barely get them on. Had to return and size up to a size 8.
I’ve bought a few size 8 bits in there recently (as it’s hard to find a 6 in store). They fit fine, so they’ve obviously changed their sizing.
I’m 5ft 2 and their “short” length works perfectly for me on wide leg trousers and jeans. Not in slim fit though, I have to get regular length 🤷🏼‍♀️

BEAchDays2 · 26/06/2026 08:08

They are wild on vanity sizing, I’m a 10 really but an 8 there

I hadn't thought of that - back to the times of size 0 being desirable

Not anymore, you’d be a 12 now.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 26/06/2026 10:30

Their short trousers used to fit me perfectly, now I have to buy extra short

ricketybeauty · 26/06/2026 10:34

Not trying to be deliberately snarky, but isn't it normal and fine that some things would fit you in one size (in the same shop!!) and some things wouldn't?

Ie. I'm what most people would recognise as slim, but I have a straight up and down figure so relatively to the average, my waist is larger than most but with narrower hips. So depending on the cut of the jeans I might want to go up or down depending on the style/ cut/ desired fit?

ExOptimist · 26/06/2026 10:44

goingtotown · 26/06/2026 07:08

I don’t want to pay £15 to have trousers shortened.

Good god is that how much it costs? Many of my m&s trousers are only £20 to £30 to buy so that would be a huge proportion.

I take up my own trousers, always have done. I'm assuming you can't sew but you could always learn.

For years I was M&s regular at 5'5" but then regular became too long and short is too short. I now accept I'll be taking up every pair, but that's fine, means they'll fit perfectly.

HiZev · 26/06/2026 10:59

I take up my own trousers and can in fact make my own trousers fairly easily. Unless the trousers are straight though taking them up (especially by lots) will spoil the shape of them.

EverytimeItPours · 26/06/2026 11:04

Im another one who thinks the sizing on trousers has gone really small all of a sudden. Also bought 3 colours of the same jeans and the fit and length was completely different on them all. This is exceptionally annoying

Gowlett · 26/06/2026 11:10

I’m fairly sure M&S vanity sizing in recent years allowed me to get fatter… I was buying size 10 & 12 there, not shopping anywhere else! Now I can barely squeeze into their size 14.

suburburban · 26/06/2026 11:41

I gave up with their trousers this year, not long enough in the waist even though supposedly high waisted and too long in leg and tight on waist

ConverselyAttired · 26/06/2026 12:18

It's not an excuse but they make different colours of the same "model" of trousers/jeans in different factories (and often different countries). This is why you get the discrepancies.

However the sizing changes are so odd. Brands don't want to be consistent with others as they want loyalty - I know I'm an X in M&S so I buy from there. They are trashing this.

mambojambodothetango · 26/06/2026 12:26

Glad it's not just me. I've been a 10 in trousers most of my life and in the past year or so size 10 are much too tight around the waist on me. Yes, I know it could be me that's thicker around the waist but in fact I'm slightly slimmer now than I've been for a decade.

aintnospringchicken · 26/06/2026 12:36

Totally agree about the sizing. I was always bought long length jeans n M&S,but now a lot of the long lengths are way too long and I have to buy regular .
I have clothes in my wardrobe from M&S ranging from a size 8 to size 14 and they all still fit me.

Noodles1234 · 26/06/2026 16:37

Yes! I always buy their particular size, so confident I just throw the tags in the bin. Well I have 2 Eva jeans I cannot wear; it’s ridiculous and I contacted them and cannot exchange it return them.

Astrabees · 26/06/2026 16:44

In their wide leg jeans a size 10 is quite loose on me. The mom jeans are much smaller and a size 12 is quite snug. A size 12 embroidered T shirt was huge and size 10 conventional ones are generously sized. Because of this disparity I can’t order on line as I have no idea whether what I am ordering is going to fit me.
