Do you wear knickers with chub rub shorts?

Sorry was the easiest way to describe them. I love summer dresses but need the shorts underneath. I’ve always worn knickers but was thinking that actually it’s an extra layer. If they have a gusset then I assume they’re designed to wear on their own?

This is what I wear. I don’t get why you would need knickers under your knickers.

Their ordinary knickers are fab, too.

Kokonimater · 22/06/2026 14:24

I wear a cotton thong then shorts on top. Dont need to wash the shorts every wear.

Oddballs bamboo womens boxer shorts. They're the future...

I wear these and also Step One. They are bamboo, I had a little stickyness around the waistband today but not much

GameOfJones · 22/06/2026 16:42

I always wear knickers with mine but they're similar to cycling short material so would be awful without underwear!

Some are more like 100% cotton knickers with longer legs in which case it seems obvious that they're the underwear.

I may have missed the point here, but what are 'chub rub shorts' please?

I’m delighted for you, that you don’t know! Some of us, even at slimmer times, get hot sore inner thighs if we don’t have something covering the bare skin. It can get really bad if you inadvertently get trapped in a dress without the appropriate layer! It’s like a scald, or dry burn, if it gets bad. A friction burn, basically.

corblimeygvnr · 22/06/2026 17:21

They also smooth out lines and bumps depending on the strength of them .

MyEasterBonnet · 22/06/2026 17:44

Yeah I’d wear knickers with chub rub shorts. I’ve just ordered some padded cycling shorts as I’m finding our Peloton really painful, and DH has said to me that I’m supposed to wear them without knickers as they’d rub and be uncomfortable, but I’m not sure I’ll be doing that.

OneLimePombear · 22/06/2026 18:55

The best thing I’ve found is to put a little bit of Vaseline in the inside of each thigh where you would get the rub before going out for the day etc.

OhThePotential · 22/06/2026 19:24

No. I never wear knickers if I can help it. Last time was about ten years ago.

Why do people wear shorts underneath a dress...??? Just knickers for me, sexy ones

Could you try walking with your feet further apart?

is this a joke? 😕

Anyway I would wear knickers under them, because

  1. they look more like shorts than knickers
  2. They are more expensive than knickers - I want to get the most use out of them so wearing knickers underneath minimises the chance they will get stained or whatever
  3. If I'm on holiday I would need to wear them every time I wore a dress - I don't have (and can't afford, and don't have space for in luggage) 7 or 14 pairs of shorts - if I wear knickers underneath I can reuse the shorts
  4. If I got too hot I could take them off whereas if I wasn't wearing anything underneath I wouldn't go commando
  5. If you can't comfortably stick a pad to them then they aren't designed to be knickers, imho!

And, the kicker:
6) If they were supposed to be worn as underwear they would be CALLED chub rub/anti chafe knickers/underwear, they are clearly called anti-chafe SHORTS, and you wear pants under shorts.

SlowBoiledFrog · 22/06/2026 20:31

I'd need so much Vaseline I would worry about going near a naked flame.

I've just ordered the Wirapa ones so hope they are good.

But to the question, I have to wear knickers with mine to stop the rub, I hope the new ones will mean I won't.

desperatemum1234 · 22/06/2026 20:39

Definitely wear knickers under my shorts

These are what I wear…they have a proper gusset and are SOOO soft and comfortable. 🥰

Gowlett · 22/06/2026 20:57

I wear cotton cycling shorts with knickers underneath. But I’ve developed very itchy knicker elastic rash on my inner thighs. Some good tips here, might try the long knicker shorts. And the Mega Babe, too.

Because of thighs chafing
Because they don’t want to flash their pants in a gust of wind
Because I’m not in the slightest bit bothered if I’m wearing sexy knickers to work or not

Gettingbysomehow · 22/06/2026 21:13

My legs dont rub together but I prefer ahorts underneath in case the wind blows the dress over my head.

DisforDarkChocolate · 22/06/2026 21:20

I have some from M&S that are underwear but shorts length, thanks for the reminder to wear them tomorrow.

I work in a school, I don’t want to be walking round getting off on the thought of me looking or feeling sexy. I want to know if I trip over in front of the class or running up the corridor after a kid, that I won’t be showing my arse.

celticprincess · 22/06/2026 21:26

Hmm I wear knickers with mine. Mostly because I wear a reusable panty liner and they would be no where to fasten it to. As someone with hyperhydrosis my liner often gets soaked and would need to change knickers if i didn’t wear liner.

I never got chafing until my 40s. I must have always had thinner thighs. I’ve noticed even in my loose trousers I’m getting some chafing on particularly clammy days- blame the hyperhydrosis. However both my kids complain of chafing - youngest is a horse rider so has muscle on her thighs. She struggles with the swearing shorts and tends to wear denim shirts with tights now. She does have chafing shorts as well. We all have the Snagg ones.

You won’t regret it. I am chunky of thigh and get killer chub rub. They stop it dead and are super comfy. And they say UNDERWEAR in the label!

TiredyMcTired · 22/06/2026 21:30

Another vote for the sloggi long leg knickers! I have tried loads of different ‘chub rub’ shorts (including M&S, Snag, Primark, Next) and the sloggi are by far the most comfortable when the weather is very hot. I’m not overweight but have thighs which rub together so need something under dresses, which is why I’ve tried so many.
Most of the shorts are not cotton, and very uncomfortable and sweaty when it is really hot. I ended up with a sweat rash and thrush when I used the Snag ones as they are pretty much like the top of tights.

I never wear pants under them. They are pants! I’d be way too hot with another layer!

ExquisiteDressing · 22/06/2026 21:42

Ah, I chucked out the sloggi ones because unless I got the two legs exactly even the lace rubbed against the other leg causing yet more soreness and defeating the object. My current ones are M&S.

As for not having room to take multiple pairs on holiday, these ones are so thin and light they take up less space than a pair of normal cotton knickers so I do take a week’s worth of them with me.

I find the comments about needing cotton odd too, breathable man-made fibres are far fresher than cotton which just stays damp, same as sports clothes in technical fibres are vastly better than cotton shorts and teeshirts for staying dry.
