Phase eight for a start

S25 · 21/06/2026 20:56

Oh sorry, it would have been helpful of me to mention my age! I’m only early 30s, phase eight seems for a much older demographic xx

Budget? Are you looking to spend £25 or £2500?

doodleygirl · 21/06/2026 21:32

Is it a religious or traditional wedding? If religious it needs to be modest if traditional it doesn’t need to be.

Gottensomedraws · 21/06/2026 21:32

What colours do you like or suit? Are you tall or short ? Do you like mini / midi / maxi styles ? With some more info posters will be able to suggest something.

S25 · 21/06/2026 22:45

Hi all, thanks.

No budget as such @thedevilinablackdress

@Gottensomedraws thanks, I have already searched those posts before making this one.

@doodleygirl I don’t know anybody as it is a friend of DH from work but I did ask him to check with the groom as I wanted to know if my shoulders needed to be covered but groom said it wasn’t a necessity - the day itself is all at a 5* hotel venue rather than place of worship.

I’m looking for brand or designer recommendations that tend to specialise in black tie rather than actual dress recommendations. I know how to dress myself well and what colours, shapes, styles etc I suit - it’s more that I’m looking for some direction to which brands/designers are good options in this area for me to explore ☺️

Does 'no budget as such' mean you're looking to get something as cheaply as possible from eBay, Vinted etc. or you have an unlimited budget?

My DDs are your age. One has just bought a Solace dress for a black tie wedding and other DD likes Rohe. I suggest you look at Net a Porter sale evening dresses. There’s Khaite, Zimmerman and Victoria Beckham all reduced. Plus you could look at Needle and Thread if you want a more romantic look - my DDs aren’t into that vibe though. Hope that helps.

(Obviously avoid high st staples like Phase 8 and Hobbs! I agree, 30 year olds don’t want to dress like their mums!)

cathyandclaire · 22/06/2026 08:10

We just had a black tie wedding-it was a mixture of floor length evening dresses and midi length cocktail dresses.

I wore a Victoria Beckham dress- guests wore Me&Em, Ridley, Reformation, Rixo, Regina Pyo, Alice and Olivia and Zadig and Voltaire. With us, people tended towards silky and chiffony fabrics rather than sparkles and sequins, however we were in a garden rather than a hotel so maybe the vibe is different.

I've noticed your tendency towards ageism on other posts - why assume older women will be in Hobbs and Phase Eight? I think black tie wedding in the afternoon would be ghastly but if I were going to one I'd probably wear Sister Jane, Lovebirds or Erdem.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/06/2026 08:39

@PhaedraTwo Because no one aged 30 would buy a black tie dress from these shops! I’m 70 and I might! My DDs!? Not in a million years. We are also talking about fashion and why would a 30 year old look at these brands! They are not on their radar, and many brands have target markets. That’s not ageist - it’s marketing.

I wouldn’t rule out Phase 8. They have so many dresses that you can very easily find a cocktail dress that someone younger would wear.

It’s also not just about the dress but how you wear it - the shoes and type of heel, accessories and hair.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/06/2026 08:42

Also Jewish weddings are often black tie so don’t be racist @PhaedraTwo They are not ghastly! Many wedding dress designers show their dresses in a black tie setting. Younger people like them.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/06/2026 08:44

@S25 If you have a budget please let us know because it might help. I know you didn’t say there was one, but is it £1000 plus or £100? Also, please ignore the comments about black tie being ghastly. It’s just ill informed and nasty. You and your friends will look fantastic.

RampantIvy · 22/06/2026 08:44

Your budget is relevant, your age isn't.

Indeed. As someone who won't see 60 again I therefore can't advise you.

Any mention of black tie wedding and you can fully expect @PhaedraTwo to be on the thread going on about how ghastly it is.

Jewish weddings have often been black tie because traditionally they were evening events, often held after the Sabbath. This is not the same as choosing black tie, which is evening dress, for an afternoon event in a hotel.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 22/06/2026 12:26

@PinkTonic it just means guests don’t change into evening gear! So no need for two outfits. Modern weddings just have a different take on their themes but far too many people are criticizing. The op just wanted dress advice, not posters saying the wedding she’s attending is ghastly! Who comes on a dress advice site and says that? Well we know, but it’s not kind or helpful.

Many Jewish weddings do start earlier now or there’s not time for food and dancing. It’s a timing issue when quite a lot is fitted in.

minipie · 22/06/2026 12:33

Reformation - lots on Vinted often having being worn to weddings.

Mac Duggal - I don’t know the brand but lovely looking dresses

The Outnet always worth a trawl eg this is gorgeous

Reiss worth a look

I like ba&sh and Farm Rio and Me&Em but suspect most of their dresses are more day than black tie, but there may be some that are dressy enough

Again you're missing the point when it comes to ageism, you often do.
