I should start by saying that I am one of those people.

I was in my local (affluent for context if that makes a difference) and as always I was looking out for people who looked good so I could steal some ideas. There were none!! Everyone looked a right state - I also appreciate that many people don’t care, but some do and, like me, need help. So I started thinking about some rules - add or disagree, but I think most people need help! Especially need more ‘do.., ‘ tips.

  1. No crop trousers!
  2. Nearly everyone needs a better bra.
  3. Check your back view in the mirror- many people had visible pants.
  4. If you’ve got bigger boobs and a bit of a tum cropped trousers and a t-shirt that isn’t tucked in is very unflattering.
  5. longer summer dresses that I keep reading on here are dated look nicer than many other options.

Well, I’ve been elsewhere this afternoon and finally seen lots of people looking stylish despite the heat. I feel a bit more inspired now, it was definitely women in dresses that looked the most comfortable and smartish. Particularly mid-length plain or small pattern shirt dresses with a thin belt - they looked like they would fit in with casual or smart. I think that’s what I need to fill the hot weather but need to dress for work gap! They may dated according to the fashionistas but they are clearly still very popular.

Plenty of cotton/linen shirtdresses around - such as these from COS, Zara, Massimo Dutti. I love them in summer.

After reading all the posts, I'm almost too frightened to go out in any of my clothes.

With the fashion things I am guilty of, I might as well hibernate all year. 😕

Augustus40 · 22/06/2026 08:17

I have 3 dresses from Next all same style. Lovely and cool. I just rotate them.

I've been trying to brush up on my normal jeans and t shirts so here's what I've come up with recently

These are all lovely - you look fantastic

My first personal style rule (for all weathers) is to ignore all tips that begin with the word, 'no'.

I think a thread about lovely things to wear in a heat wave would be great.

Lovely things:

  • linen
  • cotton
  • long loose sleeves
  • long skirts/dresses
  • large/wide-brimmed hats in straw or paper
  • big sunnies
  • painted toenails
  • chunky flat sandals in zippy colours e.g. lime green to wear with navy dresses, hot pink if you're wearing brown neutrals

Hush do excellent cotton dresses with sleeves. Cos do nice shirt dresses. Poetry is good for linen.

I recently found a discontinued Chanel nail polish (Alchimiste) on eBay that I used to wear & love years ago. It's a bright rich metallic reddish-orange shade.

I've been wearing it on my toes for a fortnight now (zero chipping!!), & every day looking at my feet makes me happy!!!

Just looked it up. That is really nice.
My toes are currently a navy from Butter London (can't remember the name). I can only wear blue on my toenails in super-hot weather as I almost always have freezing feet with pale skin that, unless it's very warm, looks corpse-like Grin

I think you can have great fun with sunglasses - I have a couple of fab 1960s frames but I'd need prescription lenses for them and they're not a great fit, which puts me off.

Also does anyone use a parasol? A local shop is selling some and I'm very tempted.

palran · 22/06/2026 14:13

I detest the wide leg trousers that many seem to like. They are awful (on me anyway) and I refuse to wear them. In warm weather I opt for loose light cotton or flowy kind of muslin fabric slightly tapered trousers to around ankle length. Tops are looser than my normal go to and in natural fabrics where possible like linen, cotton and cheesecloth like fabric.

I do cover up more than most do in the heat. I find it cooler to have flesh covered than have it burning hot when exposed.

I don't wear dresses during the day anyway, I don't like chub rub and wearing chub rub pants underneath defeats the purpose of staying cool, for me.

Oh, do go for a parasol!! I love the Chinese paper ones, & the Victorian lace ones ...

I have a beautiful red silk 50s one with an elaborate gold handle with silk tassels, which I've never actually used for anything but decoration ... maybe it's time to air it!!

Pumpernickelbrakes · 22/06/2026 14:23

I live in a hot humid country, and I stay covered up in light natural fabrics as that helps with heat

my go-tos are

cotton/bamboo tank tops
cotton/bamboo maxi skirts and maxi dresses
super light weight cotton T shirts or maxi dresses
cotton/linen mix palazzo pants
cotton/muslin floaty blouses, loose tuck,
white lightweight cropped capris
cotton bralettes, frequently changed, deodorant applied under breasts as well as armpits
cotton undies

always have a straw brimmed hat or Panama hat or Tilly hat, and carry a reflective parasol in a tote

I wear Birkenstocks most if the time and apply SPF 50 to my feet

If there is shade, I sit or walk in it. I move slowly. I exercise indoors. I do not sit out in the sun. If I walk or jog for exercise do it before 8 am or after 6pm.

i am used to the heat and humidity and I take it seriously. I start the day with electrolytes and add extra salt to my water bottle which I carry everywhere.

i really feel for you all because U.K. infrastructure isn’t set up for this heat and you’ve not been able to acclimatise so it can be dangerously.

thedevilinablackdress · 22/06/2026 14:27

I used a parasol* on holiday recently @Floisme and would definitely do so in UK now if needed

  • Actually a very dull umbrella with UPF fabric. But I could be tempted by something more decorative
Pumpernickelbrakes · 22/06/2026 14:50

this is the sort of thing I wear daily as a tropical dwelling person. Covered up in cotton, mostly.

Thank you to my lovely enablers @EleanorMc67 and @thedevilinablackdress I will check out the parasols - hope they're not sold out!

I am guilty of a lot of enabling, I'm afraid - in the flesh & now on MN!! I have persuaded friends to buy many lovely things ...!!! Mostly vintage, so I think that's fine??!!

Floisme · 22/06/2026 16:42

Vintage isn't really buying at all in my book, in fact it's positively Halo although my bank has yet to agree.

Cantonet · 23/06/2026 11:06

Parasols sound practical & lovely.
It's very common in parts of Asia to see women walking along the streets using an umbrella as a parasol. I think some must have a Spf filter.
My rules for hot weather dressing is wear natural fabrics & cotton petticoats. My pet hate is cotton/linen dresses with synthetic linings. I always cut them out.
A lot of muslin/gauze/double weave cotton as it's cool, practical & generally doesn't need ironing & hence brilliant for travelling.Lots of pale colours - cream/white as everything goes together. I used to wear a lot of black but it doesn't really suit me now.
Lots of pretty lace trimmed camisoles or blouses.
I'm 62 and my arms are not that toned ( but look better brown) but I'd rather feel cool & have air wafting around my armpits.
Flipflops in a bronze of metallic colour as they go with everything & I can walk for miles.
Minimal make up with some lip colour & natural hair that's air dried. Any hint of humidity & my hair goes wavy, so a blow dry is pointless.
And always nude colour knickers & bras in breathable fabrics like cotton or bamboo

RhosynCymru · 23/06/2026 13:08

I try my best to look presentable in the heat but I’m a sturdy built fitness fanatic who also is very winter Goth and try what I may, all summer dresses do for me is give off that ship in full sail appearance.

GimmieABreakOr3 · 23/06/2026 13:10

What on earth is wrong with cropped trousers?! Jesus!!’n

Wre · 23/06/2026 13:35

I really like non floral boho floaty dresses like free people. Colour wise I go for black, white or earthy colours.
My shoes I tend to go for plain brown strappy sandals.

TheLemonOtter · 23/06/2026 13:38

@Pumpernickelbrakes I love your outfits, but especially that full floral skirt! Where is it from?

MixedFeelingsNoFeelings · 23/06/2026 18:32

I hope the buyers for Long Tall Sally are reading this thread. Not all tall women want to wear polyester tiered maxis in animal print, weirdly dated patterns or khaki, black and mud-colour.

Thank you! Everything I wear is thrifted. It’s just a simple elastic waisted circle skirt so probably easy to make or ask a seamstress to whip up with lightweight fabric of your choice.
