I should start by saying that I am one of those people.

I was in my local (affluent for context if that makes a difference) and as always I was looking out for people who looked good so I could steal some ideas. There were none!! Everyone looked a right state - I also appreciate that many people don’t care, but some do and, like me, need help. So I started thinking about some rules - add or disagree, but I think most people need help! Especially need more ‘do.., ‘ tips.

  1. No crop trousers!
  2. Nearly everyone needs a better bra.
  3. Check your back view in the mirror- many people had visible pants.
  4. If you’ve got bigger boobs and a bit of a tum cropped trousers and a t-shirt that isn’t tucked in is very unflattering.
  5. longer summer dresses that I keep reading on here are dated look nicer than many other options.

@PersephoneParlormaid can you give an example of what you think are nice slip ons, for people who want to do at least 12000 steps?
My toes are awful, I'm nearly 60, so trainers are a goid choice. Outside of sketchers, I've never found a supportive/comfortable pair of slip ons. I do wear midi dresses throughout summer.
When criticising older women, just be aware that there could be medical issues dictating foot wear. We don't criticise men, or rather men have sensible choices, after decades of socialisation, as to what the sexes should look like.

Very good points. I hate it when "sensible shoes" are ridiculed on here.

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 10:33

What about clients and bosses?

I don't have any clients and as long as I'm dressed without boobs or bum hanging out my clothes my bosses don't care how I look or if I'm fashionable.

PrimeSeason · 21/06/2026 12:31

OP - I’m sorry you’ve had it in the ear. I’ll try to respond to your request for tips for dressing in the summer.

Disclaimer - this is just what I do. Everyone else - crack on and ‘you do you’.

  1. my hair is naturally frizzy and it would be even more frizzy in the heat. I don’t like it so I have regular keratin treatments so it looks smooth and swooshy
  2. Make up. I just don’t put make up on in the heat. I use some subtle/ gradual tan on my face and body and I wear sunglasses and spf/ spf lip balm
  3. I stick to plain, not patterned, fabrics
  4. I stick to a limited/ capsule colour selection: white, chocolate, navy, baby blue
  5. Glasses - I have some really nice/ cool tortoiseshell glasses and the sunglasses version too.
  6. Accessories - gold flat strappy sandals with a little gold clutch on a strap to wear crossbody (the gold makes the look more dressy)
  7. Chocolate brown woven clutch on a crossbody strap with chocolate brown strappy flat sandals (the chocolate brown makes the look more daytime/ dressed down/ casual)
  8. Gold (vermeil) necklaces and earrings
  9. Raffia tote with brown leather handles if I want a bigger bag
  10. Underwear - nude microfibre thongs and ‘good’ (I have big boobs and get fitted) nude bras and nude strapless bra.
  11. If I need to walk more than just a local stroll then I’ll wear sporty white sneakers (FitFlop)
  12. Jersey/ t shirt material looks saggy/ cheap/ downmarket on me so I look for little tops made from eg cotton poplin (shirt material’)
  13. Love white linen shorts or a Midaxi-length gauzey white (lined) skirt with a little top

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 10:53

many people did look a state - girls with their arse cheeks on show, underwear visible all over the place, lots of flesh visible, and patches of sunburn, a couple of shirtless men. In a usually fairly stylish town. I get that they didn’t care and that’s fine! It wasn’t very inspiring in terms of fashion ideas though! I stand by cropped trousers being unflattering even if they are in fashion. The people who looked tidiest were probably the men in chinos and blue and white shirts tucked in with belts and elderly ladies in nice colourful flowery dresses (they generally didn’t have underwear on show either).

How’s that got anything to do with you though.

I’m assuming you don’t walk around with your arse cheeks on show or no shirt on - so how is that got anything to do with your poor style choices.

I will never understand why some insecure women feel the need to pull others down just to make them feel better about themselves.

You say this isn’t a thread to be rude about others but you’ve not stopped slating people you’ve seen.

Why not start a thread saying how you struggle to dress stylish, your body type and ideas from MNers.

Just focus on yourself.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 21/06/2026 13:20

Well we have been to the coast- Yorkshire- and I said to dh how nice it was to see people in their summer clothes. Best looks were any kind of summer dress and shoes the women could walk comfortably in. Bright or light coloured clothes, not all black or all grey etc. Women in shorts which were not clinging to their thighs or arse.
I think anything not too tight or clingy looks best.
Things where the wearer looks comfortable such as light or bright coloured non see through clothing in natural fabrics.
Men in ironed linen shorts and a shirt. Not tracksuits or t shirts, or any kind of sportswear.
I saw a several women in beautiful dresses. One was a white patterned dress with loose sleeves to the elbow. Thin belt around the waist. Mid calf length, not see through. It buttoned down the front. The woman I’d say was in her 60s and wore big sunglasses. She had grey hair pinned up.
Another was a woman with short spikey grey hair. Maybe Kate 50s 60 ish again. She wore like a feathery silver sift dress which came to here knees and sleeveless with chunky soled black sandals.
Now men walking around shirtless anywhere other than on a beach or beside a pool 🤢🤢🤢🤢

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 21/06/2026 13:22

To add I do not care about bras. They serve no other purpose than to enhance the male gaze.
The same with vpl, I don’t care.
Where whatever knickers you want. Wear a bra or don’t wear a bra.

I think you will find males gaze far more if you don't wear a bra.
Bras are for women's comfort, to stop your boobs bouncing about and sagging, not to create an image for men to oggle.

I thought your thread was about choosing clothes yet here you are again talking about how dissapointed you are in women people and what they are wearing on a sunny day.

henlake7 · 21/06/2026 14:17

Just leave people alone! Some people thrive in hot weather whilst others are just trying to get through their day without melting into a miserable heap!
Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Ive just been out in an oversized tee and stripey pj bottoms (because they are both thin and 100% cotton) and I could nt care less what others wear.
My only 'style rule' for hot weather is that I dont want to see nipples in Sainsburys!😂

IsoldeWagner · 21/06/2026 09:47

I disagree. I've seen a lot of larger women wear fantastic patterns to great effect.

They still risk look like super-sized sofas.

I like the striped dress on you, it looks good.

I bought it in 2 other patterns as I find maxi dresses really hard to get the right fit and length!

Yes, and it's strange how we're often advised never to wear horizontal stripes! It's really nice.

The vast majority of sofas I've seen for at least the last 15 years have been plain grey or beige, so I think you need to update your insults.

TrayBakesAreSweet · 21/06/2026 16:38

Oh dear. So much for ‘Go ahead and wear the sleeveless top/dress/shorts. Nobody’s looking.’ The OP certainly is👀

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 16:58

Well, I’ve been elsewhere this afternoon and finally seen lots of people looking stylish despite the heat. I feel a bit more inspired now, it was definitely women in dresses that looked the most comfortable and smartish. Particularly mid-length plain or small pattern shirt dresses with a thin belt - they looked like they would fit in with casual or smart. I think that’s what I need to fill the hot weather but need to dress for work gap! They may dated according to the fashionistas but they are clearly still very popular.

Where is the animal print dress from please? I’m also an 18 and really struggling to find decent summer dresses. I prefer dresses with straps but need wider ones.

you look lovely in all of your outfits.

The biggest difficulties to dressing well are body shape and natural fibres. I see many gorgeous looking slim women in my area (Wimbledon) because well cut, decent fabric clothes tend to be designed for their shape.

I imagine most people look better in well cut clothing from decent fabrics. They tend not to wear them in poorer areas because they can’t afford them, not because of their body shape.

mondaytosunday · 21/06/2026 20:41

Oh give over @Domeistoss! I love a bitchy fashion police thread! Yes of course we should all wear whatever we want but if we are going to make sartorial judgments I’m in!
Unless you have trim ankles I agree with the cropped trousers. They can look good though!
Linen, especially white, can be see through so awareness of undergarments please.
Better bras for sure! And no visible bra straps - ugh. And no exposed tummies - slightly overweight late teens/early 20s are particularly guilty of this. Ditto too short skirts or shorts with your butt cheeks hanging out.
Athleisure wear is a trend I’ve always hated. If you aren’t going to the gym just why? There are plenty of comfortable leggings and tops that don’t make you look like you are a personal trainer. And I always think they smell a bit sweaty even if they don’t in reality. Bike shorts are not flattering on anyone.
Maxi floral dresses are a perennial favourite and only the cut changes. The Little house on the Prairie revival of last couple years seems to have passed thank goodness. Solid colours are having a moment though.
Those cropped crochet or knitted shawl coverups seem to be everywhere too, layered over a tank or boob tube.
Throw over sheer scarves (like a kimono jacket but doesn’t have sleeves), though yet to see many out and about.
It still seems predominantly t shirts or sleeveless tanks and linen trousers around me (middle class family oriented neighbourhood). No one stands out. But I go into (London) town proper and there are some very elegant dressers there. But it all starts with one thing: a slim figure, then you look good in most things. Sadly that’s not me!
(As for men, guys please get clothes that fit. Wearing shorts or trousers under your beer belly means the back is too low and sagging bottoms - and possible visible butt crack when you sit down - would give anyone the ick.) And please shave.

EdithBond · 22/06/2026 02:40

I’ve travelled throughout the tropics and used to live in a Mediterranean country where 30+ degree summers were standard.

  • Black linen drawstring, wide leg trousers, culottes or loose fitting shorts
  • Linen, cotton or bamboo loose fitting shirt or tee (only sleeveless if your arms are toned)
  • Or a long linen or cotton loose fitting dress or maxi skirt (with pockets)
  • Black rubber platform sliders (e.g. from Primark) to cushion feet and avoid blisters
  • Flesh coloured bamboo seamless underwear (sports bra style)
  • Long pendant necklace (with other lengths if you want to layer)
  • Light, loosely tied scarf
  • Tinted moisturiser, waterproof eyeliner and mascara
  • Matte lippy in bright colour to lift the face (bright pink or orange works for me for me)
  • If you have long hair, tied back or into a bun.

I always wear black. While white’s tempting as it repels heat, once you get damp it easily marks and is see-through, requiring lining. Also not flattering on most people, unless your skin is very dark. But a white linen shirt with black trousers, skirt or shorts can look OK.

Don’t wear anything tight-fitting or not made of natural fabric.

Avoid patterns other than in accessories (e.g. scarf), especially if overweight.
