I should start by saying that I am one of those people.

I was in my local (affluent for context if that makes a difference) and as always I was looking out for people who looked good so I could steal some ideas. There were none!! Everyone looked a right state - I also appreciate that many people don’t care, but some do and, like me, need help. So I started thinking about some rules - add or disagree, but I think most people need help! Especially need more ‘do.., ‘ tips.

  1. No crop trousers!
  2. Nearly everyone needs a better bra.
  3. Check your back view in the mirror- many people had visible pants.
  4. If you’ve got bigger boobs and a bit of a tum cropped trousers and a t-shirt that isn’t tucked in is very unflattering.
  5. longer summer dresses that I keep reading on here are dated look nicer than many other options.

edited for typos

Well presumably because she’s not a man so what they were wearing isn’t relevant to her.

Why not ? The op said people as if everyone she was seeing was "unstylish" so i thought that would have included men but no they get a free pass to wear ugly clothes.

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 08:45

I wasn’t looking at the men, I don’t get inspiration from them. I don’t read fashion mags / instagram, what I like doing is noticing people who looked good, thinking about why that is and getting some tips. It’s an affluent town, normally lots of inspiration - but yesterday I was surprised to see none, having puzzled over what to wear myself and thought some do’s and don’t s would be useful.

I was in a very busy urban pub garden yesterday and I don’t recognise any of that. Lots of dresses (including one paired with a beautifully unusual hat!), a few shorts and t-shirts but of the stylish variety (mine were paper bag waist, cream and black check, very classy thanks!), and lots of wide leg linen trousers.

No cropped trousers or untucked t shirts of the sort you mention op.

brit-bashing hate?? Loads of us find it hard to dress in hot weather - we aren’t used to it. It’s style and beauty so some dos and donts would be useful - seems the best place to ask!

Yet the shops are full of summer clothes! Every...wait for it....summer.

Who are you to be doing out fashion rules, Anna Wintour? 😂

DrWhosJazzyScarf · 21/06/2026 08:46

This is a really mean-spirited post, OP. It won’t land well, especially in this heat.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 21/06/2026 08:46

Plain linen or cotton dress in a cut and colour that suits, tan leather accessories, big sunglasses.

Hair slicked/plaited/tied out of the way if it's not behaving.

That's my summer uniform and I always feel OK.

Ihateslugs · 21/06/2026 08:46

I’ve had knee replacement surgery in both legs recently ( December and May) and found that the incision is very sensitive to certain fabrics. I cannot wear jeans, cotton trousers or denim skirts so I’ve been wearing a lot of dresses. I do find them much cooler in hot weather as I don’t have a right waistband cutting me in half! So I’m quite happy ( and smart I hope) in a floaty maxi dress although I have to be careful not to get the hem caught in my crutches!

Lomonald · 21/06/2026 08:47

DierdreDaphne · 21/06/2026 08:39

Yup me too 😅. And one of the few bras that don't make me itch when I'm sweaty!

What you are a lady who sweats, surely not !

DrWhosJazzyScarf · 21/06/2026 08:47

It also makes the assumption we all want to/should want to look the same. That’s not how style works!

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 08:48

thedevilinablackdress · 21/06/2026 08:39

Agree, can we try and have a nicer, more positive approach on S&B. Including yourself in the slagging doesn't make it better OP
and

  1. I look great thanks
  2. It's so old fashioned to care about VPL and 'flattering'
  3. Capri trousers are 'back in' according to the fashion press

Not so much ‘vpl’ I saw but the pants clearly showing through thin fabric.

bumblingbovine49 · 21/06/2026 08:48

Well I really dont care if you don't like the way I look. I live in crop and 3/4 trousers in the summer because I am too fat for shorts, long trousers feel too hot, even linen ones and I hate wide leg flappy ones , though i admit they are cooler.

Dresses of all sorts look awful on me and in any case they make me feel self conscious and I hate wearing them, though I do have one or two very carefully selected summer skirts that look acceptable with a tshirt over the top

I would never in a million years tuck in a t shirt because I can absolutely guarantee that looks a lot worse than leaving it untucked and in any case I like the feel of it loose and would feel incredibly uncomfortable with it tucked in.

Ilovecheeseyah · 21/06/2026 08:49

Light linens m&S is good
well fitted bra
a nice straw hat
shirt dress
summer dresses with small sleeves - cotton silk linen
wedges
bejeweled sandals
exfoliate skin and buildable tan
nice summery earrings or statement necklace
light summer handbag eg raffia
adjust make up - to there but not there - lip gloss and some shimmer
decent pedicure
fresh summery scent eg tom ford portofino or similar
(all personal views which work for me so please be kind thanks)

No you didn't. Your title was about "British people not looking good in the heat", so yet another generalisation about how bad British people are, in some way.
You could have titled it: "What are your dos and don'ts for hot weather style?"
That would have been better.

Really depressed to see a Brit bashing thread in S&B. Came here for a break from Hate.

It’s hardly hate

I was hoping that all the stylish people on here would give some rules- not me! I just noticed that my usually stylish town was less so, I’ve got clothes for being hot at home in, but find it much harder when I want to look a bit more put together and even worse for work. This was meant to be useful and lighthearted - clearly unintentionally hit a nerve with some!!

I live in a busy town centre and love people watching. So many lovely outfits in the summer. Bright dresses and actual colours.
Most people have too many shit clothes though and mostly polyester and we don’t have enough summer to be investing in clothes so it’s cropped trousers and t shirts for the win.

Well presumably because she’s not a man so what they were wearing isn’t relevant to her.

When there's multiple mentions of unstylish "people" in the OP/title and then they all turn out to be women (we're the problem, again!), it's just a bit depressing. If you're not sick of the constant bashing that women get for simply existing, in clothes, in warm weather, then congrats.

I got great advice off my teen son. I wanted to pop to the shop but the t-shirt I was wearing almost covered my shorts - I was pottering in the garden so it didn't matter when I originally dressed. He simply said, tuck a bit of t-shirt in the front. It worked, I looked quite stylish!

You could ask MN to change the title. If you want some style and advice for dos and don'ts, fair enough. However, as I said, your thread title comes across as something else.
You could contact MNHQ.

lechatnoir · 21/06/2026 08:53

I completely disagree and think when the sun comes out people dress better not worse That’s certainly true in my case if for no other reason than I live in a fab assortment of hats that hide my frizzy hair and invest in fab sunglasses both of which instantly elevates my look.

mynameiscalypso · 21/06/2026 08:54

I think one of the mistakes that people (men and women) make is thinking that it’s cooler to wear less clothes - by which I mean, tiny vest tops and shorts type things. There were a lot of bums on show in London yesterday. I feel myself flinching when I see all the skin that’s exposed to the sun and it seems so much hotter, and riskier, than something loose and more covered up.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/06/2026 08:54

I too hate these “British people are a mess, French / Italian women are all so stylish” threads op. They are numerous. Especially in summer. And patently not true.

WHat were the cropped trousers you saw like? Because capris and pedal Pushers are very much in this summer.

Lifelover16 · 21/06/2026 08:44

Why all the snarky replies?
OP is asking for some advice for dressing in unusually hot British weather, her opinion is people in UK (including herself) don’t look well dressed. She doesn’t personally like crop trousers and tee shirts.
I was hoping to read some constructive and helpful suggestions from style and beauty contributors.

It’s a snarky post belittling other women, expect snarky replies.

Boxiboxi21 · 21/06/2026 08:54

We are too wedded to polyester in this country. I'd love to see more natural fabrics.
