I should start by saying that I am one of those people.

I was in my local (affluent for context if that makes a difference) and as always I was looking out for people who looked good so I could steal some ideas. There were none!! Everyone looked a right state - I also appreciate that many people don’t care, but some do and, like me, need help. So I started thinking about some rules - add or disagree, but I think most people need help! Especially need more ‘do.., ‘ tips.

  1. No crop trousers!
  2. Nearly everyone needs a better bra.
  3. Check your back view in the mirror- many people had visible pants.
  4. If you’ve got bigger boobs and a bit of a tum cropped trousers and a t-shirt that isn’t tucked in is very unflattering.
  5. longer summer dresses that I keep reading on here are dated look nicer than many other options.

JFC - touchy much? This is in style and beauty - don’t read if you aren’t interested. Nobody is telling YOU to do anything, I said in the op that some people don’t care - that’s fine, you are one of them. Some of us do care (or need to care for looking reasonable at work whilst not melting) and Sharing tips for that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. It’s not about you!! I don’t care what you look like!!! My DCs call this ‘main character energy’.

In the heat my hair goes frizzy and I have to be careful not to go red from catching any sun. I really don't tan well like some people do.

My hair is quite fine although I do have a lot of it and if I get a bit sweaty, it goes wavy, also misty or drizzly weather does the same. 😡

I've had skin cancer so I tend to wear sleeves and pretty much cover up as much as possible, I wear 50spf everywhere, I have tanned a little bit on my arms and lower legs but it's quite faint and mainly from just walking around.

I wear crop trousers a lot in the summer.

It's from next! This one

I get age 14 or 15 the sizes are generous I'm a size 10 and 5ft 3

Sorry, not that one (not my taste!). I meant the lovely knee length one you're wearing with a white top?

What a tedious over-reaction

Why would we be talking about wet towels and hard floors in s&b… off you trot to a ‘hot and bothered and very grumpy’ thread.

It's from vinted! A principles one. If you're a similar size to me I found one Octavia427 is selling the exact same one. It looks better on than the pic 😂

Loub1987 · 21/06/2026 10:16

I’m a larger woman, so I tend to go for anything that won’t cause chafing or over sweating.. long flowing dresses, robust sandals etc.

I quite like cropped trousers though! Clearly, i am out of the fashion loop on this one 😂

I've been trying to brush up on my normal jeans and t shirts so here's what I've come up with recently

Where are the beige trousers from?

Thank you! It's really lovely, especially with the loose white top. I think I'm probably a similar size to you, and only 5' 1"!

But I am interested in style and beauty. I should add to the natural fabrics, wide leg trousers footwear and clever top suggestions. I dress very well in the heat, am stylish - I am frequently told- dressed for office and formal meetings, travel and walking outside in this heat, but I’ll not bother.

So I am interested, but less so the ‘male gaze’ version you seem to be striving for 🤷‍♀️.

And for all your back pedalling, helped by PPs reinterpreting your frankly rather unpleasant opening post, your first intention and inclination, and other women-bashing, remains clear.

And all this in 39deg C?!!!

AgeLikeSeaglass · 21/06/2026 10:29

Wow the hot weather really brings out some people’s touchy side. This is a style and beauty board and OP wants tips on looking stylish in hot weather.

We just don’t do hot weather well in this country, whether that’s dressing well (whatever ‘well’ means to you) or dealing with the heat in general. It’s not Brit bashing or woman bashing to say that - you only have to look at the number of threads with people moaning about how much they hate it and how antisocial behaviour tends to increase.

RudolphTheReindeer · 21/06/2026 10:31

It's due to be 30+ degrees. I don't care, I'm more concerned about keeping cool than meeting a random strangers approval

Perfectly happy thanks, just wondering what to wear to look smartish when it’s v hot. I think this is a very common dilemma in this country. I’ve said I want to look professional so I’ve no idea where you got the ‘male gaze’ thing from. There is some wild over sensitivity and ego-centric responses on this thread. Lots of people who say they don’t care what they look like then getting arsey because some people do need/want to look a bit smarter.

Right now I’m in old shorts and a tshirt because I’m at home - this not going to work for a week of hot weather in a workplace with a smart and rather conservative dress code!!

I quite like this time of year, because you REALLY get to see how different everyone's bodies are and how we are all so unique. Personally I wouldn't have as much on show (mainly to avoid sunburn as I'm deathly pale, and insect bites) but I'm a bit in awe of the body positive people who don't care and let it all hang out and prioritise being cooler.

As long as I'm in sandals I'm happy and regulated. I can't wear closed toes shoes in plus 25 degrees.

What about clients and bosses?

Loose cotton trousers and a tunic top, not helped by the fact I’ve just had ankle replacement surgery and I’m wearing a huge plastic boot up to my knee. At home, I recently brought some muslin Pj and they are wonderfully cool and easy to wear.

I couldn't give a crap what I wear as long as I feel comfortable, but then, I'm an adult.

Sandysandybeaches · 21/06/2026 10:53

many people did look a state - girls with their arse cheeks on show, underwear visible all over the place, lots of flesh visible, and patches of sunburn, a couple of shirtless men. In a usually fairly stylish town. I get that they didn’t care and that’s fine! It wasn’t very inspiring in terms of fashion ideas though! I stand by cropped trousers being unflattering even if they are in fashion. The people who looked tidiest were probably the men in chinos and blue and white shirts tucked in with belts and elderly ladies in nice colourful flowery dresses (they generally didn’t have underwear on show either).

Op, I’m just back from a v. hot city break (peaks of 34-40 every day). The outfits that worked well (kept me cool(ish) and looked decent), were loose fitting, knee length, linen dresses or wide leg, drawstring, linen trousers and vest tops. I also wore a long sleeved linen shirt or lightweight, short kimono for when the sun was at its strongest.
I tend to bloat out in the heat, so always wear clothing in the next size up in the summer.
I noticed that the locals wore similar loose fitting outfits. They didn’t really wear shorts or tight fitting clothes.

Wear simple clothing, put your hair up, apply spf, waterproof mascara and a lip balm, wear a large pair of sunglasses, paint your nails and put on a pair of simple flat sandals and you should be good to go…and ignore all of the miserable sods on here, who are just out to cause trouble.

Melarus · 21/06/2026 11:31

I'm neither miserable nor out to cause trouble, but I'd so like to see us be much less negative about ourselves and others on S&B.
Your own approach to hot weather sounds a good one

IsoldeWagner · 21/06/2026 11:45

Many recommendations for "large sunglasses".
I would advise that people get them for their face shape. I tried on loads - I have a very small face and they looked ridiculous!
So many shapes and styles, think about what flatters most.

Ponoka7 · 21/06/2026 11:50

@PersephoneParlormaid can you give an example of what you think are nice slip ons, for people who want to do at least 12000 steps?
My toes are awful, I'm nearly 60, so trainers are a goid choice. Outside of sketchers, I've never found a supportive/comfortable pair of slip ons. I do wear midi dresses throughout summer.
When criticising older women, just be aware that there could be medical issues dictating foot wear. We don't criticise men, or rather men have sensible choices, after decades of socialisation, as to what the sexes should look like.
