Loose fit, lightweight, long cotton dress, with long sleeves & with pockets?

First time asking a question in Style & Beauty. And may be TMI but here goes...

As the heading indicates, I'm looking for a dress with the following features:
a) loose fit
b) lightweight
c) cotton (not linen!)
d) ankle length/midi
e) pockets!
(and not see through in strong sunlight).

Not so much concerned about being beautiful or stylish but something that meets the above criteria and which doesn't require alterations.

Reason for looking for this type of dress is I'll shortly be returning to a country in Central Asia which was sweltering in April/May of this year and will be even hotter in July 🤦‍♀️ . And where women dress fairly conservatively - even Western visitors. Though plenty of colourful dresses and fabrics were being born - no need to stick to black or plain fabrics!

Note:
i) I'm 'petite / a shortie - 5'1" So 'regular' long dresses will trail the ground!
ii) I'm a size 8 - 10 but with boobs - basically, a Bravissimo woman rather than with an athletic build
iii) as an older woman, something that looks floaty and willowy on someone out of their teens can look dowdy and night dress like on me. But hell, if I have to look like a Victorian maiden aunt in a voluminous nightdress, then so be it!

I normally shop at Fatface/Seasalt/White Stuff but I didn't find anything suitable there. I did order and try on this Seasalt dress which on the face of it ticked all my requirements - ie loose, lightweight(ish), cotton, long, pockets and in a petite fit. However, when I tried it on in various sizes, it managed to be both hugely voluminous whilst tight around the bust and armpits 🤷‍♀️ - I give the link to show what didn't work!

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

PS When I was last in the country I'll be returning to, I did look round the markets etc to buy a dress locally but pretty much invariably they were in synthetic fabrics, often quite heavy.

Edited to say: not sure if the Seasalt link works - but maybe it doesn't much matter as it was too illustrate what doesn't work!

What beautiful dresses, thank you!! Here's the link

Do you know how the sizing comes up? I ask as the smallest size
covers 10 - 14 and I'm a size 8 - 10.

Such beautiful colours!

Tbh, I’m not sure about sizing. I usually wear a size 14, but one of my dresses is a Medium and the other Large, and they both fit well, although obviously the L is a little bit looser, which is fine for a floaty dress.

Woah - the Indian cotton Liv dress could be the one. OK - it’s going to be too large , too long and they hint it requires a slip underneath. But it’s free delivery and returns. And maybe Indian dresses are the way to go? Thank you and @limetrees32

I have the Liv ( and the Hattie) and bloody love them.

I wore the Liv at my last singing gig and was told by someone they were "distracted from the music by my wonderful dress"! I think that's a compliment.

And no slip required.

I love this thread - I'm inclined more and more towards wafty dresses with sleeves in summer to keep the sun off, and I love Indian block prints. I was going to suggest Banjaara Indian cotton dresses but I think my favourite style of theirs, with a shirred elastic bodice and 3/4 sleeves, is no longer in stock. And would depend on if you want to draw attention to your bosom!

I'm really intrigued by where you're going - you say it's 'Central Asia' but NOT a Muslim country. To me, Central Asia is Kazakstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan etc and none of the 'stans' can be described as not Muslim countries. Or are you much further east? Are you going to drop a hint? Smile I'm nosy!

I don’t think Dilli Grey has been mentioned yet - lovely floaty Indian cottons, plenty with sleeves and pockets. Loads on Vinted.

ICantStomachWhelks · 08/06/2026 11:56

I have this, which is currently a bargain. But doesn't have pockets.

Lovingapeacefulgarden · 08/06/2026 17:36

Peacocks online had some lovely dresses like that recently

bovrilormarmite · 08/06/2026 19:05

That’s lovely. I would love to be able to wear these dresses but I feel that as a 5ft 5 apple shape I would just look like I’m wearing a tent. Don’t these look better on tall willowy types? Or am I wrong?

growinguptobreakingdown · 09/06/2026 05:00

This thread is going to cost me money. The 100 stars dresses are gorgeous.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 09/06/2026 05:41

Look on eBay or vinted for these, specify what you’d like. If you don’t mind second hand.

mumonthehill · 09/06/2026 08:22

@growinguptobreakingdown if you can wait then their sale is often good. I buy in the sale normally but I really wanted the willow pleat dress so did pay full price for that.

I'm 163 cm so smaller than you. I have a couple of similar shaped dress and it's all good. I sometimes take the hem up and it did take a while for me to get used to the look - or actually the feel but I like them now. I'm not in the UK but I sometimes wear them in the Winter too with a merino base layer, think tights and boots.

Pink City Prints and Aspiga would both fit the criteria. These are my hot weather go-tos.
And if you ask Etsy about block print cotton dresses you'll find a variety of lovely Jaipur-style made-to-order options for about one third the price of A or PCP- and you should be able to specify length as well as size.
