Loose fit, lightweight, long cotton dress, with long sleeves & with pockets?

First time asking a question in Style & Beauty. And may be TMI but here goes...

As the heading indicates, I'm looking for a dress with the following features:
a) loose fit
b) lightweight
c) cotton (not linen!)
d) ankle length/midi
e) pockets!
(and not see through in strong sunlight).

Not so much concerned about being beautiful or stylish but something that meets the above criteria and which doesn't require alterations.

Reason for looking for this type of dress is I'll shortly be returning to a country in Central Asia which was sweltering in April/May of this year and will be even hotter in July 🤦‍♀️ . And where women dress fairly conservatively - even Western visitors. Though plenty of colourful dresses and fabrics were being born - no need to stick to black or plain fabrics!

Note:
i) I'm 'petite / a shortie - 5'1" So 'regular' long dresses will trail the ground!
ii) I'm a size 8 - 10 but with boobs - basically, a Bravissimo woman rather than with an athletic build
iii) as an older woman, something that looks floaty and willowy on someone out of their teens can look dowdy and night dress like on me. But hell, if I have to look like a Victorian maiden aunt in a voluminous nightdress, then so be it!

I normally shop at Fatface/Seasalt/White Stuff but I didn't find anything suitable there. I did order and try on this Seasalt dress which on the face of it ticked all my requirements - ie loose, lightweight(ish), cotton, long, pockets and in a petite fit. However, when I tried it on in various sizes, it managed to be both hugely voluminous whilst tight around the bust and armpits 🤷‍♀️ - I give the link to show what didn't work!

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

PS When I was last in the country I'll be returning to, I did look round the markets etc to buy a dress locally but pretty much invariably they were in synthetic fabrics, often quite heavy.

Edited to say: not sure if the Seasalt link works - but maybe it doesn't much matter as it was too illustrate what doesn't work!

Cinnamon Junction.

I have a couple of their dresses and they are wonderful in hot weather.

However, I am 5'8" and size 16, so a different shape to you!

Reading your description I immediately thought of these on Etsy. I don’t think they have pockets though.

Someone posted a Monsoon / East dress upthread but they have a whole page of them. Not sure if they all have pockets but some do. Not cheap though.

I haven't bought anything from this company, so cannot vouch for quality, but it could be of interest

https://thisisunfolded.com/

Have had a few things as I love the ethos but sizing can be weird and their is potentially a long, about 7 weeks, lead time.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 07/06/2026 09:17

Have a look at John Lewis own brand dresses. Reasonable price. If you can live with the throwback to the 70’s look at Dilly Grey. I have a pink Indian style print that is basically the same cut as one I had as a student😂.

Maybe look at this from Kate Barton?

I have two of these in different colours and can confirm they’re very comfortable, light and easy to wear in hot weather. Nothing currently available in the sale unfortunately, although you can sometimes get them at quite good reductions.

I don't mean to sound smart or anything, but would you be able to buy suitable dresses in your destination rather than here before you go. I'd get one suitable dress here and try get the rest there, since the shops will be geared up for what you need.

I really rate the monsoon pink/red maxi dress above, seems to fit the bill.

As the OP said, local dresses are all too often made from synthetics.

I had a dress ftom them- almost 10 weeks lead in time.
When it arrived the sizing was extremely weird, horrible fit. And very difficult to return it.
I will never use them again. Buyer beware.

The Clovedale site someone linked upthread is being flagged by my virus checker as a fake site.

CrochetHooked · 07/06/2026 16:52

I have similar buying criteria to you and I've been buying Boden dresses on vinted. I found them originally through searching for cotton dresses with pockets.

Make sure you’re happy with their long delivery times and returns policy before you order

Check out their trustpilot reveiws. So many of these,"fake look at us, ethical " companies around.

BuntyBeaufort · 07/06/2026 17:45

I’ve got a couple of just this sort of dress from Nila Rubia. They’re made of fine, lightweight fabric, have pockets (mine are on the front) and below elbow length sleeves, and are my go-to in very warm weather. I’ll try and find a link….

BuntyBeaufort · 07/06/2026 17:54

Can’t seem
to attach link, but these show what I mean. They’re cotton, hang dry in an instant, although the colours can run on first wash.

Has anyone mentioned One Season Australia? They do dresses just as you describe - thin cotton lawn with pockets. They also do viscose ones which I wear in the evening ( too hot in the tropics during the day). When you google remember to type in One Season Australia Uk. A lot of the styles come in two lengths. The designs do lend themselves to being shortened if too long as well. You can also sometimes get them on vinted and eBay.

Also recommend Aspiga for beautiful dresses for hot climates.

QuetzalTerfLus · 07/06/2026 19:23

I absolutely love these for hot climates, though my son pointed out that I am a “shapeless form” in them! definitely modest, very cool. Collar, pockets, 3/4 length sleeves. One size so on me (5’ 4”) they are long but not to the ground. The softest loveliest fine cotton - there are a variety of patterns. Not cheap but a great company and will give you delivery dates if you email to ask.

try Hush, Poetry, Wrap. Or how about a full or tiered maxi skirt and a light cotton shirt?
