Loose fit, lightweight, long cotton dress, with long sleeves & with pockets?

First time asking a question in Style & Beauty. And may be TMI but here goes...

As the heading indicates, I'm looking for a dress with the following features:
a) loose fit
b) lightweight
c) cotton (not linen!)
d) ankle length/midi
e) pockets!
(and not see through in strong sunlight).

Not so much concerned about being beautiful or stylish but something that meets the above criteria and which doesn't require alterations.

Reason for looking for this type of dress is I'll shortly be returning to a country in Central Asia which was sweltering in April/May of this year and will be even hotter in July 🤦‍♀️ . And where women dress fairly conservatively - even Western visitors. Though plenty of colourful dresses and fabrics were being born - no need to stick to black or plain fabrics!

Note:
i) I'm 'petite / a shortie - 5'1" So 'regular' long dresses will trail the ground!
ii) I'm a size 8 - 10 but with boobs - basically, a Bravissimo woman rather than with an athletic build
iii) as an older woman, something that looks floaty and willowy on someone out of their teens can look dowdy and night dress like on me. But hell, if I have to look like a Victorian maiden aunt in a voluminous nightdress, then so be it!

I normally shop at Fatface/Seasalt/White Stuff but I didn't find anything suitable there. I did order and try on this Seasalt dress which on the face of it ticked all my requirements - ie loose, lightweight(ish), cotton, long, pockets and in a petite fit. However, when I tried it on in various sizes, it managed to be both hugely voluminous whilst tight around the bust and armpits 🤷‍♀️ - I give the link to show what didn't work!

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

PS When I was last in the country I'll be returning to, I did look round the markets etc to buy a dress locally but pretty much invariably they were in synthetic fabrics, often quite heavy.

Edited to say: not sure if the Seasalt link works - but maybe it doesn't much matter as it was too illustrate what doesn't work!

What you want is called a "galabeya" and you can get them in cotton in a variety of sleeve lengths.

LaliqueSaltGrinder · 07/06/2026 21:23

Shein is never the answer.

Vinted or Ebay if it has to be cheap.

ChipswithMayonnaise · 07/06/2026 23:15

Are there Asian British shops near you? Try those? You could even get a few dresses handmade.

Someone posted a Monsoon / East dress upthread but they have a whole page of them. Not sure if they all have pockets but some do. Not cheap though.

How on earth did I not spot these when looking at the Monsoon website a little while back?!

Cinnamon Junction.

I have a couple of their dresses and they are wonderful in hot weather.

However, I am 5'8" and size 16, so a different shape to you!

Woah - the Indian cotton Liv dress could be the one. OK - it’s going to be too large , too long and they hint it requires a slip underneath. But it’s free delivery and returns. And maybe Indian dresses are the way to go? Thank you and @limetrees32

Thank you. I think I’d overlooked those as they’d require alteration on the length (shortening, so I don’t trip over). But maybe i just suck that up for a dress that otherwise fits the criteria

Have a look at Roman.

Thanks - I’ve now ordered one to try out 😊

I find these really useful for making a dress with a low neckline modest- saves wearing a slip or camisole underneath. Theres loads of options online. It might widen your dress options somewhat.

Really well-made clothes - quality fabric and wonderfully comfortable. And every singly dress has pockets. What's not to like!

Can’t seem
to attach link, but these show what I mean. They’re cotton, hang dry in an instant, although the colours can run on first wash.

What beautiful dresses, thank you!! Here's the link

Do you know how the sizing comes up? I ask as the smallest size
covers 10 - 14 and I'm a size 8 - 10.

Such beautiful colours!

Not sure if these have been mentioned, and also quite expensive, but poetry always looks to me kind of made for this sort of dress. Like (just one random example) this -

Edited

Thank you - that does have the potential to open up options iro dresses which show too much!

Edited to say I've ordered a set to see how they appear on me

This dress may suit you . The site seems really ethical to me. You choose your choice of fabric for the dress and tell them your measurements and they make it up in a studio in London. Takes around two weeks. The fabrics are really light Indian cottons.

Or this is nice!

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 08/06/2026 00:15

I started replying to individual posters up thread. But now posting a generic thank you. I sort of feel a bit like Goldilocks (if I'm remembering the right fairy tale) - , this one has no pockets, this one has short sleeves, this one too low cut. But maybe like Goldilocks, I'll find the perfect bowl of porridge

Few bits on shein ; they do 100% cotton and I always look for modest. I have travelled throughout alone and always dress conservatively for my own safety. Lots of different styles

I did not expect Shein to do galabeyas.

This Is Unfolded is brilliant! I was going to suggest them and saw this post.
Ticks all your boxes, and quality is great. Some are cotton, some plant viscose which is lovely and not at all like synthetic viscose.
Their ethical stance is also brilliant.
I now buy all my clothes there (or second hand)
Enjoy your trip!

Gudrun Sjoden

You might find some inspiration here - lots of natural fibres. A lot of these clothes are styled with layering - but you can obviously wear them separately. But their footless tights are like very light leggings and surprisingly cool to wear.

I floated around a very hot Greece in one of their tunic dresses.

I would second laundry b. I've bought shorts & vests from there after a recommendation on here but they do dresses too. Not sure if they are long sleeved...
