What to wear for a garden glam and disco birthday celebration?

WildflowerMeadow · Yesterday 10:21

I need help please...

I have been invited to an amazing birthday celebration that is entitled 'An Evening of Garden Glamour and Disco'. There are cocktails and afternoon tea followed by a live big band and then a 'Disco with a Difference'. Venue is rural, think farm with events barn.

The Dress Code is 'Garden Disco Glam - English elegance meets Ibiza after dark.'

I am 5' 8" and a size 10/12, age 57 but with a mum tum so won't get away with anything bodycon or tight fitting. Budget would be around £100 but could stretch to £150 for something fabulous. Don't have big boobs but really need to wear a bra to deal with sagginess.

Can you lovely ladies suggest anything that would fit this theme as I am a bit stumped?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Just adding, my colouring suits pinks, blues, greens and neutrals but not yellows or reds. Black and brown also fine but not sure if they are right for the theme?

You know what? I keep looking at that dress code- which is a bit of a word salad! - and I'm stumped too! If I was in your position I'd buy myself a new dress that I really liked and felt really comfortable in and I'd just wear it and sod whether it fitted the code! So with that in mind I'm kicking off the suggestions with this.
And hopefully a whole bunch of people will come along and say, no, you can't wear that it's just a beach dress! 😂 And then they'll suggest something. 😉

Oops sorry it's petite! Fallen at the first hurdle...

SchoolNightWine · Yesterday 11:10

Agree with Temporarily - it’s a bit of a weird dress code!
I’d wear this as I love it and am looking for an excuse to buy it! https://www.joebrowns.co.uk/lulu-floral-halter-neck-dress-wf518?colour=187

So let's just keep posting dresses that we like! 🥰 I loooove this.

As its Disco, I think I'd wear a sequin top with slinky trousers. And maybe a feather boa. Wedges. Don't wear heels if the venue is farm/rural.
Love disco! 🕺

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · Yesterday 11:28

And I've been eyeing this up for weeks but I have no events to wear it to and no justification for buying it at all. 😂

I think I’d go chiffony floaty maxi dress for the garden party with a smattering of sequins for the disco glam….something like this but not this as the backs not great for a bra

Ha ha, glad it's not just me that is stumped by the dress code.

@TemporarilyCantDoMyself I love both of the Love and Roses dresses you posted - the first is definitely on my shortlist - thank you.

@Turnitoffnonagain I really fancy something sequinned so a top and slinky trousers would be a good shout - maybe a 70s disco vibe?

@SchoolNightWine I love the style of that and the base colour but not sure about the pattern.

What do we think of jumpsuits? I found this one on Nobody's child:

@minnowonthesay gosh the shape of that dress is beautiful and would really suit me I think. I am off to image search something similar - thank you.

Isn’t this the sort of thing the hosts will be hoping their guests wear?

It’ll look rustic in daylight - and then the beading under the disco lights at night …

(From the frocks being suggested I’m guessing most posters here are to young too have ever encountered a disco?)

WildflowerMeadow · Yesterday 12:31

@woolybears OMG, I adore that dress. I would worry on two accounts though - it looks as though it may be stretchy and therefore would emphasise my mum tum and secondly the weather forecast is not great on the day of the party and it's on a farm so I would be nervous about getting a rental dress dirty or marked. I love it so much though.

That particular dress is (imo) ruined by the cut out back.

@PhaedraTwo Yes agreed - I definitely need a bra. The shape of it is beautiful from the front though and it has the sequins to take it into the evening.

I'm currently lost down a rabbit hole of sequined tops and 70s style flared trousers...

Edited

I would assume it was an Annie's Ibiza look they were aiming for. At more affordable prices.

It's beautiful from the front but the back shape is awful. A halterneck would be much nicer if they wanted an open back, although it would still be beautiful with a closed back.

@SeditiousPam LOOOOOVE

No to next floral

WildflowerMeadow · Yesterday 13:00

@PhaedraTwo Good inspiration, thank you. I think it is the garden party/afternoon tea crossed with Ibiza style disco that is confusing me.

I'm getting search fatigue and going back to @TemporarilyCantDoMyself advice to just buy a nice dress I like and wear it, even if it doesn't exactly fit the theme.

My instinct is something Boho from Free People but I think a dress like the classic Rhode Ella dress would work (Rhode have ceased production but their dresses are still available s/h). Lots of dupes/inspired by out there - Farm Rio, never fully dressed etc

WildflowerMeadow · Yesterday 13:18

What about this Lipsy one - too much like a wedding guest dress?

@WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma I love the Rhode Ella dress - I can only find it so far in a pink/yellow combination but will keep searching to see if there are other colourways.
