It’s a good shape for me @ScallopShellWalk and I like the covered buttons. It can look a little like a chef’s top, but I like that.

@ScottishMouse yes I agree it can look a little like a chefs top and that was what I liked most.

Thanks @ScottishMouse and @BettinaInDenmark, I’ve not been on holiday for a few years and classic me I’m super disorganised. I was hoping to wonder around drinking coffee and eating pastries, so that’s the full extent of my wishlist (and not to be asked ‘can I have a snack?). I enjoy art and dislike busy places, but other than that I’d be happy with any suggestions.

I’ve not had much from the sale this time around, and wondering if I should have a go at the tapered jeans I meant to try a while ago (just really stuck on sizing, especially if the cotton is bound to stretch).

So now I’ve ordered the Chie Mihara lotte boots to try. I swithered over a few days as I actually had preferred the flat boots like the Sturlini high or even low leather or suede boots. But I’ve always admired these, just thinking I’d likely not want heels very often. But I’m realising I don’t need to wear them very often. There will always be occasions for a heeled boot. My feet have gone up a size so last year my black heeled boots and my ancient but still amazing trippen boots had to go as they no longer fitted. These boots are somehow not showing up in the sale but they are discounted.

Joining the lovely Copenhagen chat, a wonderful city, @CakeAndJazz you will love it. I would recommend a train ride to the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art: it s a fabulous building in a fabulous location with wonderful art, a great museum shop and really lovely food in the cafe. I recall we had a shared smoked fish platter with accompaniments and, such is the Danish way, it was beautifully represented and tasted divine. I would wholeheartedly recommend eating there. It is just outside of Copenhagen but like taking a tube journey to the edge of London.

@BettinaInDenmark , we have a true Danish woman amongst us, I feel very honored. Yours is a country of style, taste and lovely people, thank you, we have had a couple of really good holidays in Denmark, one with small kids, one now they have flown the next!

@CakeAndJazz my fave coffee & pastry spots are:
Andersen & Maillard (particularly the Nordhavn one)
Andersen bakery (islands Brygge)
Hart (many locations but I particularly like the one at Fredriksholm for outdoor seating by the water)
Benji (I think they have moved since I was last there so not sure of location)
La Cabra (multiple locations I think)

If you like ice cream Osterberg is amazing. They have a few locations.

And if you like pizza, the best I’ve had is at Bæst.

My husband and kids love Gasoline Grill for burgers (I’m veggie so haven’t eaten here).

I also love Auren’s Deli for a quick bite during the day or in the evening with a nice glass of wine. Very chill.

If you’re a foodie, watch the Copenhagen episode of Somebody Feed Phil before you go. I find him intensely annoying, but you’ll get some other food ideas.

Top non-food tips:

• swim in the harbour baths (my faves are at islands brygge & nordhavn but there are many options)
• Cisternerne is a cool underground exhibition space - particularly great if it is a hot day and you want to cool down for a bit
• I love the design shops - Ferm Living have a beautiful space
• cycle to Reffen, a huge outdoor street food market (oops, food again!) - stop on the way for a look at Noma’s greenhouses, and get the boat back (there are other great street food markets if that one is a bit far)
• Visit Studio Arhoj, a very cool space where they make cute ceramics, glass, and much more - you can see them working too
• Tivoli, of course!

Oh yes, Louisiana too, as @ToastCosILoveIt says.
Are you going anywhere else in Denmark? I also loved Aarhus when I visited last year, and years ago when the kids were little, Lego House in Billund was amazing (much better than Legoland itself).
I can’t wait to go back this autumn, though dh is suggesting a pre-Christmas trip in December instead. What do you think @BettinaInDenmark, autumn or Christmas? I’ve only ever been in summer/late summer previously.

My last sale order arrived today, well, amongst it the Baya blue striped shirt from the new collection. @Theteapotsbrokenspout @ShadowViolet and @Countmeout I don’t think i am keeping it. The colour looked dull out of the bag but once on it did transform and I liked it, nice cut and sleeves (already have a Baya) and true to size. But, and this is probably a big but for many in this group, what put me off was the line of the buttons as they met the points of the colour - they were slightly off centre and to the left and I couldn’t unsee it (see photo which may take time to upload as it passes through Mumsnet’s security). That and the fact that the colour hue wasn’t one best suited to my pallor, means that it is going back. I think you can see that the buttons are left of centre in the photos on the website.

The cotton twill belted trousers in both colourways are going back. I had ordered the 12s and sent them back, but the further price reductions prompted me to order the 10s. They had too much of a feel of walking trousers you buy from Mountain Warehouse, and while they did feel better with a top over them, they didn’t quite do it for me.

Back too went the patchwork gillet, ordered in the S/M but it does come up small and you definitely need to size up I think to stop it looking like it has shrunk.

@MsDastardley the Japanese culottes in a 14 are a keeper. The 12s had fitted but I felt they were too snug in the waist and would annoy me when I wanted to relax and slouch. The 14s sit a little lower on the waist and have plenty of room but are not too big. Most importantly, they didn’t make the huge leap in the hips or legs which sizing up can sometimes do, and the larger size gives a firmer nod to them looking a little like a skirt at a glance. I don’t think the model does them any justice on the website in the way that they have been styled on her. I think I will get lots of wear out of them on cooler days and in winter with tights, a really good buy for me, they are lovely and I would recommend them.

I also kept the stripe cotton linen waistcoat in fennel seed. I had paid this absolutely no attention on the website across the year but I have been eyeing it up in the sale and when it came back into stock in a 10 (recommended size for my 12 body), I went for it. It does come up big but that suits it and the armholes aren’t so big that you see too much bra. I really like it and, serendipity, the matching trousers popped back into stock at some point today so I have ordered them too. The website recommends a 10 for me but some of the reviews say they are small in the waist. As there was no 10, I have ordered the 12.

@ToastCosILoveIt I didn’t notice the buttons when I tried the Baya I was too concerned about the pyjama top look, but it’s the same, once you have seen something you can’t unsee it.

I liked the smoke cotton twill belted trousers for exactly the reason you didn’t, the walking trousers vibe, ideal for dog walking.

Thank you @ToastCosILoveIt . I don’t think that blue is for me, never mind it’s other shortcomings.

I did notice that button placement on the Baya. It’s something I’ve often seen on garments that are closed with a small number of buttons (e.g. chore jackets) and I suspect it’s to prevent gaping. None of that matters of course if you don’t like the look of it, but it looks intentional/ functional to me. I’ve noticed it on previous versions of the Baya shirt too, but perhaps the stripes make it more obvious on this latest version?

Another order arrived yesterday. The pantry stripe red and blue dress is going back. The shape is good but with the stripes my young people say it ‘gives too much dressing gown’. I also remembered that wrap dresses and tops always irritate me.

The blue and white trousers that look like pyjamas are staying, though. After discussion with the youth it is agreed that daywear which looks like nightwear is a thing now and these are intended as casual wear so all a ok. Nice shape, comfy and cool for summer.

Lyocell wool top also staying, useful, good shape on me.

And surprisingly the knitted dress which I ordered because of recommendations on here. I’d have expected it to show every lump and bump but actually it skims very nicely. I also assumed it was grey, but it’s a nice dark blue.

Yes, I have that linen knitted dress @ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs and love it. Sadly I haven’t found an occasion to wear it, though. I must make an effort to get it out of the cupboard!

@IlovePond I’m going to have to think about what to wear it with. Not obvious

It’s a cool and dreich morning here (yay!) so perfect for trying on my sale items again.

I did this keeping in mind two useful pieces of advice. First, I went back to what someone here (sorry, I can’t remember who) said a long while back - the item should:
a) fit
b) flatter - must highlight positively my shape
c) complement - must complement my colouring and complement the rest of my wardrobe
d) work - be versatile in the life I live, multi-seasonal, day to evening, etc.
Secondly, I remembered something I read elsewhere about how you feel when you put on an item of clothing - do you feel ‘you’ in it?

I realised that most things have to go back. The indigo jacket and the silk linen top I have tried multiple times this season and never bought. I told myself it was because they were very expensive full price, but if they had fulfilled all the criteria above, I would likely have taken the plunge even at that price. I had hung the top in my wardrobe, certain it was staying, but I realised this morning that the sizing is not quite right and it looks a bit frumpy because it is too long. The indigo jacket is similarly a little less than flattering as I sized up for comfort across shoulders. Whereas the neat cashmere sweater, despite having sized up two sizes and as a result the sleeves being very long and quite baggy, feels like me and what I want to feel like on an everyday kind of day. So that stays. The button through dress fulfils criteria a-c only, but that is ok because it is for certain specific occasions that I don’t have anything for already. So that stays too.

I really need to remember these things, and remember to stick to my initial feelings about something. If I didn’t buy it first time around, a reduced price is not going to make it work any better.

Expecting the Ikat skirt (new) and the red striped smock top (sale) to arrive today. I will be keeping the above in mind when trying.

@ToastCosILoveIt thanks so much, the museum will be perfect (will do that the first day there). And will also plan it so I have lunch at the cafe there, sounds delicious. It’s been so long since I’ve explored another city, so I’m hoping it lives up to expectation.

@ScottishMouse I appreciate your list of recommendations so much, thank you. I’ve not had the brain capacity to plan at all so this helps so much and will save me aimlessly wondering the streets. Such a nice balance of food and other bits. Does the city have any nice parks/green spaces that are worth a visit?

The xs table cloth dress has arrived and is a perfect fit ( even in the bust. ) if this pops up again you will definitely need to size down imo. The sleeves don’t even seem as overwhelming.

Not as warm here today either but I’m a bit disappointed I like sun and warm.

So many lovely parks and outdoor spaces @CakeAndJazz. It’s a very outdoor-feeling city, especially because of all the water. One of my fave outdoor spots is Assistens Cemetery - that sounds weird but it is lovely and more like a park. You can also see where Søren Kierkegaard and Hans Christian Andersen are buried.

@ScottishMouse your reasonings and good points are very useful. I am going to keep them in mind too. I have noticed that I get carried away before I try something on. Most of my failures are when I buy and can’t return- the resell sites. Or I somehow convince myself the little tightness, on that sale item, won’t be a problem but it always is. So first point is important to me I now more than ever, realise. Getting swayed by a good deal is something I need to be aware of.

How something feels on has always been important to me, sometimes to the detriment of how I look 😱

Most of my clothes work hard as I don’t usually have a lot, though since discovering toast I now have so much more. Now the complementing of each item is becoming more important and I have stuck with a simple colour palette. I have yet to realise if they complement my own colouring. I usually feel if I like a colour or not and won’t put it on if I don’t. I guess flatter for me comes under fit, though I can see it’s different. Or it’s like the complementing of my colouring, I don’t maybe look at that enough. 😬

@ScallopShellWalk I too have a very small wardrobe. Only the very best get a spot, and I need to remember this in the frenzy of sale time. Anything that isn’t perfect (or close to) will inevitably end up on a resale site a few months down the road. I get excited when I find things I think will fill a gap because there are always gaps, and somehow think I can ‘complete’ my wardrobe, but realistically there will always be another gap that appears so no piece is ever going to make my wardrobe complete. Plus, I enjoy the browsing and trying, so it’s not like I would stop shopping anyway.

@ScottishMouse thats so true, there will always be a gap and this is really great for me to realise too.
I need to move on all of the clothes I bought that don’t fit. I’ll do that over the coming week.

Oh that’s interesting Shadow, thank you, I think you’re right, it is intentional. I live in London and I expect in the autumn I’ll pop into a Toast store in jeans and boots, when the weather has turned, and I’ll end up trying it on and buying it. I liked it, but I’ve bought a lot of Toast lately so I was trying to be discerning!

My Ikat skirt arrived and I’m not even unfolding it. It is definitely light blue which is not for me. Here’s a photo next to some white pjs to show the difference.
