Do you change into old clothes at home or stay dressed?

Probably an odd question
But just out of curiosity
How many of you get changed when you get home ,and just wear ,old or to big , clothes round the house?
Assuming you have bought yourself some nice summer clothes,do you wear them all day ,even to clean and cook in ?
Or do you get changed to scruffs when you get in ..
I get changed in to clothes that are 3 sizes to big ,and then wonder why I don't want to go back out again..but we have dogs ...And dog hair sticks to black badly .
Contemplating throwing out all my old to big clothes and just wearing the ones that fit all day ,with no change

Why do your quite nice clothes keep getting "too big", are you shrinking?

Lost 11 and a half stone ..still got more to go

I do this too.

i wear old, ill fitting, tatty clothes at home so I don’t have to worry about pet hair, getting crumpled or dirty etc. As soon as I come through the door I change out of my nice clothes so they are kept in perfect condition.

The problem with this is that popping out then feels like an effort because I have to get changed and I then sometimes say sod it and go out looking ridiculous.

I tried binning all the awful clothes and actually just wearing nicer things but soon ended up with two tiers of clothes again.

I hate that I do this tbh
I spend most of my time at home so I have a wardrobe full of lovely new clothes that are rarely worn.

This exactly is how I am
I've been nipping to pick my DH up from the train in scruffs and hoping I don't see anyone
And once im in I'm not going out again
But it's hard to relax in going out clothes

I have a big drawer of lounging at home clothes, but they’re not all too big or old. Hoodies, leggings, tees…my comfies, basically. I can chuck on trainers and go to the shops in them happily. If I was going ‘out out’, I’d change,

Edited

This is what my adult daughter does ,but with gym wear ..so she's presentable and then just has clothes to go to the pub or a meal to change in to ,so quite smart ..plus work clothes actually

I change into my nice, comfy home clothes.

You don't have to wear clothes that are three sizes too big in order to be comfortable or feel relaxed when cooking.

I know ,but I've had to buy so many clothes as I'm still loosing weight and I didn't want to be spending more money on lounge wear ..but I'm very embarrassed if anyone comes to the door

OP posts:
Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 30/05/2026 12:23

I usually change out of what I've worn for work once I'm home. If I go to the gym, I shower after and put pjs or lounge wear on. If I'm working from home I tend to be more casually dressed anyway - I might wear shorts when I wouldn't in the office. Too big or old clothes? Lots of my clothes are old, but that doesn't mean they're scruffy or things I'd only wear at home.

Sproutling · 30/05/2026 12:27

We change into our 'gladdies' (our 'glad rags' which are actually the opposite to our good going out clothes, just something that stuck)

They arent necessarily old/worn too big etc, though some are, some are bought specifically to be gladdies, just comfy, easy, care, and we are always glad to change into them lol.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 30/05/2026 12:28

I bet changed when I come home into something more comfortable. I don’t want to cook in my work clothes and I like to keep my nice summer clothes for going out

Blueflutterby · 30/05/2026 12:28

I'm about half way through all the messages
Very interesting to read what everyone else is doing
I'm thinking of having a huge throw out of everything I'm wearing that is to big ,and currently being worn at home ..
And going through what is left and fits to see if I can find something that would count as lounge wear ..I don't think I have much ..
Plus the weather changing ,means I need comfy clothes for hot or cool weather
And I'm finding the bargains I used to get when a lot bigger, just don't exist at a smaller size .so it's getting more expensive to replace clothes as I loose weight

Same!

TheLilacFinch · 30/05/2026 12:32

It depends what I’m doing but most of the time, as soon as I get home I’m straight upstairs to get changed into comfies or PJs! Not necessary old stuff but joggers or leggings that I don’t wear outside anymore and usually a sloppy oversized jumper or t shirt. Bra OFF obviously and I’ll even change my underwear too 😂

Blueflutterby · 30/05/2026 12:32

bumptybum · 30/05/2026 07:48

i wear different clothes At home because the ones they were at home tend to be things I can move and kneel down and curl up without stretching out knees or bums. The clothes I wear out, tend to be a little bit sharper And smarter.
Also, if I’m only out for a few hours, the clothes might not need washing, particularly in the cooler months.

If i went, for example, I’m wearing cashmere with an undershirt, I won’t need to wash that cashmere each time. If I cook in it, I will need to wash it

In summer, if I’m wearing cotton trousers like chinos or something similar to that, I won’t need to wash them every time

But the key is to get rid of those shitty old baggy too big at home clothes and buy clothes for home that you feel decent but there are still stretchy and comfy. Sort of ‘leisure clothes’.

You don’t have to spend a lot you can go to H&M or something similar and get some really nice stuff that isn’t expensive hold up well can be washed over and over again but it looks decent enough that you would be absolutely fine to pop down to the shop in

It’s amazing how different you feel when you’re at home wearing something where you still look decent

you don’t need a whole wardrobe of it either just three or four outfits for each season. Nice t-shirts, Sweatshirts, Joggers, but not Sports joggers smart joggers, Shorts that are made in something like jogger material or Sports brand shorts made of technical materials don’t need to be ironed, Stretchy singletdress in summer. That kind of thing

Yes I agree I do need to do that

If I’m not going back out again I put on clean pyjamas, doesn’t matter whether it’s 3pm or 9pm

I’ve not done that on holiday and got bloody soy sauce on my new white trousers yesterday

See if I did that ,and put pj on at 3 pm ,to cook in ,I'd have to change / shower before bed and put on a fresh pair ..and I don't have that many pairs to do that with

I think the weight loss (which is amazing by the way - well done!) is a big part here, and once you've been at maintenance for a while you will start having clothes that are older/no longer pristine but not massively oversized on you - your choices are a bit stark at the moment because all your old clothes don't actually fit you any more!

I only get changed at home if I have been to work and think I could get another wear out of what I have on if I hang it up straight away. Otherwise I'm basically always wearing things that are reasonably comfy but presentable - but I wouldn't put on my newest, most exciting clothes for a day where I'm not going anywhere in particular. On the other hand, I never have a day where I don't leave the house (unless I'm really ill) so would always dress in something that I'm happy to be seen in.

Yes this is true ..I spend more time at home ,than out of the house
I always look a total state at home ..even pj are sizes to big .
Yet some nice clothes ended up at charity shop barely worn .
I think it's knocking my confidence looking a mess 70% of the day

I never change. I like to look nice all the time.

That said, I don’t cook (that’s DH’s job) and I don’t clean (housekeeper’s job). I am constantly tidying up after messy teenagers but I don’t need to change for that.

Blueflutterby · 30/05/2026 12:47

Lots of good ideas and opinions
I'm quite surprised at how many of you all wear an apron
I didn't even think these were sold any more .
I think ..I find housework very tedious and it takes me ages to do something that needs doing, and if I'm in nice clothes, that's the excuse to not do it at all.
But looking such a state for most of my day is not helping my mental health at all

Could you look in charity shops or vinted for clothes in your current size to wear at home? That way it might not feel so 'wasteful' (though I don't think it's a waste if it makes you feel better!) to buy clothes 'just' for home.

I was waiting for someone to suggest second hand .
I honestly genuinely have tried..and I couldn't touch the clothes after they arrived from vinted ,never mind put them on
They smelled funny ,each item had it's own smell ,and even after washing I could still smell it ,so I charity shopped them.

I probably don't do enough housework, to be honest, but I don't find I need to get changed to do most basic stuff - I hoover, wipe down the kitchen, tidy up, make beds and do laundry in whatever I'm wearing (including my smart work clothes, because sometimes I'd do some of those things in the morning before leaving). I do tend to clean the bathroom in my pyjamas on a weekend morning because I've accidentally bleached clothes doing that before, but that's only for a 'proper' clean - I'd bleach the loo and wipe round the sink wearing whatever.

I change into comfy but not necessarily old: I buy new comfy clothes as well as new work clothes.

I need to change my perspective..yes it would absolutely make me feel better to have a set of nice clothes to change in to ..
There's just been so much to buy each time I lost weight
Nightwear , underwear,socks , trainers,summer clothes,winter clothes,coats , raincoat blah blah blah .

If secondhand isn't an option then I'd go with supermarket clothes - basics from Asda are as cheap as second hand anyway. You're not going to need loads - a few t-shirts and pairs of comfy trousers would probably cover you.

CantBelieveIm30 · 30/05/2026 12:54

Have you thought about getting clothes from charity shops? I’ve got about 6 new dresses for summer, all for around £5 or less and they’re nicer than what I would have got from Primark for triple the price for 1 🤷‍♀️ Maybe that could be a way to help you not worry about ruining your new clothes?

Blueflutterby · 30/05/2026 12:55

I should of asked this at the start ...
But how many lounge wear outfits do you all own ..
those of you that have specific nice lounge wear sets ..
Apart from pj ,as I will need to change to fresh pj before bed

Honestly? I don’t really own any clothes that are old or too big. I like clothes and style, so even if I’m just in jeans and a t shirt it will be ‘nice’ jeans and a t shirt. I hate feeling scruffy or messy, that’s just me.

edited to add I have several pets - lint rollers exist.

Edited

My white cat laughs at lint rollers 😀
