What are the unwritten style rules?

I am, largely, a very unstylish person. I pick comfort over everything.
I would love to look a little more put together and fashionable day to day. What are the unwritten style rules i’m missing out on?

OP that's the best way! Start with something you know you like and go from there. Personal style is exactly that - personal. If you are owning it that comes across, as you're comfortable in your own skin. I dislike blanket "rules" because they often only apply to some people.

Wear colours that make you pop
No leggings unless off to gym
Tuck in tops if say wide trousers
Brush hair fully or style it

@frumpydump look at Nobody’s child or New look. If you register with new look, you usually get a 25% discount code, which makes their clothes really reasonable, and they have a good choice of dresses.

and please change your user name to non- frumpy dump!

(sorry meant to quote last post not your first)

I have concluded that my granny was right on the fundamentals.

Really well fitting bra makes a huge difference - doesn't have to hoist them up to your chin but no random overflow or bulging

Slips make a big difference to how a dress/skirt hangs

I absolutely detest ironing and I hate having to admit this but some (not all) clothing really just doesn't look good without being ironed.

I stick to my colours (deep autumn) (unless at the gym see below) and body type (hourglass) and nod to what's in fashion but don't really follow it. I'm moving towards natural fibres where I can.

I tend to wear no more than 3 colours, not a fan of patterns but don't mind a striped top. Gold jewellery only but I only like simple and dainty pieces.

I break my rules for the gym. I wear black like a uniform and it's the only time I wear leggings.

Ignore all the so-called rules about not wearing X with Y.

My advice would be to try on lots of things, including things you wouldn’t normally wear. Find images you like and think about what it is you like about it- it will often be the mood of an outfit rather than specific items- and think about how you can translate that onto your body and lifestyle. For example I love anything that reads as dashing/ a bit highway man, but obviously I’m not going to go round dressed as a highway man (not to the office anyway) but something like a particular cut of jacket can give the mood. your love of that dress makes me think maybe you like a romantic look? You can use that as inspiration.

Good underwear is essential so either a bra fitting or follow advice online and get lots to try on. You need your whole boob in the cup. I suspect you are wearing too big a back size and too small a cup size.

I’m going to book a bra fitting - maybe next week or the week after next. And then I’m going to get my mum to come shopping with me so I can get some inspiration and then try and find stuff on Vinted/make it!

I recommend charity shops as a good place to try stuff out - you can try things on, which I think is essential if you're trying out different styles but it's not too expensive so you won't feel bad if it doesn't suit

I think your dress is ugly and horrendous. Is that feedback ok OP as it’s not about your weight? I mean, it’s the same as you said on the other thread to an OP, which you found acceptable. What’s it like to receive it? I’m surprised you haven’t apologised.

I’ve hidden the thread because it was annoying me. You can think that about the dress - totally your prerogative and not a personal comment about me.

I don’t know why you’re so offended that I called a skirt ugly. Like, genuinely. It’s a skirt. I think it’s ugly. Is that not allowed?

Because of the hypocrisy of saying ‘nobody be mean’ and then dumping on someone else’s clothing choice. People have been very polite about your dress. Anyway, I’ll leave you to it. You’ve ensured that you get nothing but encouraging comments by begging people not to be critical.

Genuinely just move on. It’s not normal to be this upset about someone making a comment. I meant in terms of my body and weight.

Also ironic because I posted that picture and multiple people then said about weight! Just get a grip

Nobody called you fat on this thread and there are not "multiple comments" about your weight.

You were rude and nasty on the thread you've now hidden and your comments went beyond simply criticising the skirt and veered into criticising the poster for buying it and criticising her taste.

I said a skirt was ugly. Move on.

Just don’t go to M and S as they are notoriously terrible at bra fittings. Rigby and Peller are the best but there are also good independents out there. Research before you go or you may end up in the wrong size. The PP who said try on lots is not helpful as unless you’ve had a proper fitting you’re unlikely to know what it looks/ feels like. Nearly everyone wears an underband that’s too big and it can feel weird if you’re not used to it.

OK cool. Well to focus on your dress, as requested, the fabric looks thin, cheap and droopy. HTH.

I’m also on the look out for some decent boob tape as I’ve picked up a couple of backless dresses and I’m not too sure how that’ll work!

They’ll take a lot of confidence for me to wear but I’m hoping they end up looking okay, as I can really imagine the yellow one in particular being lovely for a day on holiday!

Okay, you’re entitled to your opinion and I’m not so upset by it that I’m going to chase you down on other threads, so congratulations I guess?
