Almost all summer clothes are horrible in my opinion. There is nothing suitable for this season that is nearly as elegant as boots with black tights and a swingy faux fur coat. It is a miserable time for style.

Got to disagree there. Winter clothes make me look like the love child of Vera and Compo. I look and feel so much better in summer. There's no need to have everything skimpy and ill fitting.

Why? When they're well cut they can look fabulous - especially on someone tall. I can understand you not liking them yourself if they don't suit you - but banning them for others?

Genuinely never seen anyone of any size, shape or age looking nice in them.

I bloody hate these. I bought some and they are absolutely impossible to walk in.

I thought they would be ... get them straight onto Vinted & go buy yourself some non-thong mules instead!

Ones that aren't just a band across the front of the foot, but come up slightly higher on each side, are more supportive & easier to walk in. Something like these (ASOS, Sezane, Ravel).

How are those of us who are larger than an A cup supposed to wear strappy sundresses then?

I try to find sundresses with a strap wide enough to cover my bra straps. If I'm wearing a strappy one, I wear a vest top underneath that has built-in support. I don't much like bra straps on show either.

Nerdynerdynerd · Yesterday 00:35

Whatever those all in one strappy/tshirt and shorts lycra playsuit things are... hideous and make you look like you're about to wrestle for sport. Also they always seem to come with camel toe 🤢

Then it's just a dislike for a particular shape of trousers - like I have for skinny jeans. Wide-leg trousers are worn year-round - they're not summer-specific?

Either way I think they’re awful so I’d be happy to ban them at any time 😁

But keeping your feet enclosed in shoes/trainers & socks in boiling hot weather is probably the cause of the smell in the first place!

Yes, I suppose you are right. Smelly socks with sandals though…eww!

Do. Not. Get. Me. Started. on people wearing flip-flops in towns, shops, restaurants, and public transport. I'm talking proper flip-flops, the rubber ones, that we all had in the Eighties. When I was growing up, no one wore those anywhere except ON the beach. You never, ever saw them outside of their natural sandy environment. They are NOT real footwear!

My other pet hate is mismatched bikinis. No, they do not look good. They do not look cool and carefree and bohemian. You just look like a skank who can't keep on top of their laundry. This trend went on for about twenty years, along with blonde mids and ends paired with inches of dark roots. And often, the same person was wearing both trends. Talk about looking like a cheap tart. FOR TWENTY YEARS!!!

So wearing a different bikini top to the bottoms, & having dark roots with blonde hair, means that a woman is a "skank" & a "cheap tart"??

I thought this post was intended as something lighthearted, about some people in the UK's inability to dress for hot weather. But no, it's now moral judgements based on swimwear & hairstyle choices?

Cattenberg · Yesterday 00:53

Long, thick Nike sports socks worn with strappy summer dresses on really hot days. Girls, you don't have to do this to yourselves. It's unflattering, uncomfortable and your feet must stink after a few hours. That's a high price to pay just to show other people that you're aware of current trends. When I was your age, you would have been called "fashion victims".

Fair enough! You probably won't like my current summer favourite, sarouel trousers (aka harem pants, more or less)!! I'm planning on wearing them while lying on a chaise longue, having my partner feed me frozen grapes & wafting me with a peacock feather fan ...

Thong bikinis on the beach in the UK. They’re EVERYWHERE at the moment. Including on girls that are waaaaay too young to be wearing them.

Greening tattoos, ruined by too much time in the sun just look vile.

Sunburn. What IS it with the fucking British and our seeming inability to apply sunscreen properly?

Paunchy shirtless blokes who think they’re David Hasselhoff in his heyday. Ugh! Put it away.

I saw a man today wearing a scoop neck vest (OK, fine), but it revealed a scarlet triangle of skin just below his neck. That's not even a difficult area to apply sunscreen to!

Topless men / women in bikini tops in the supermarket. Fuck off, you mingers.

Send them to my local Aldi, they will die from hypothermia when they get to the dairy aisle.

Bright colours top and bottom? I genuinely want tips on how to do that without looking like Timmy Mallett.

Black and white aren't colours; they go with everything. Why is that wrong?

I'd agree that pastels don't generally work with black. It's a saturation/intensity thing - the outfit lacks cohesion. Though it can be made to work better by using murkier pastels, varying textures, & mixing in connecting colours via prints etc.

Brights such as red with white or cream, IMO, can work very well together. The high value/lightness of white or pale cream means that it contrasts well with red. I like it. I also like it when other creamy but darker/richer tones are added, like camel & tan.

Right now being in my underwear in Aldi is sounding mildly appealing not going to lie.

We are absolutely useless when it comes to hot weather. Everyone rushes to the nearest body of water at the hottest part of the day, gets lobster red, many get in trouble in the water because they're not used to it, some are overcome by the heat, hospitals brace for an influx of burns and heatstroke, and basically it's all a disaster.

"Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" - Noel Coward.

This quote was inspired by the English doing stupid things in the heat during colonial times in India. And we haven't gained any more common sense since then. One little bit of heat and the Brits go nuts.

Trust me your neighbours over the water in Ireland are just as mad, if not madder, when it comes to the sun. Sadly an Irish teenage girl drowned on a beach on Sunday. See also my post about shirtless inpatients wandering around the hospital grounds in Dublin and the post about the fella sunbathing in Limerick!

I've never seen them look fabulous on anyone, including on that model you linked. She looks like a friendly giant lent her his trousers.

People wear long Nike socks with strappy summer dresses? Please tell me you're joking.

Yes keep your shirts on men!

I live in a hot country. DH’s uncle and aunt came to visit and we were walking around the city (nowhere near a beach) past cultural monuments. Next minute Uncle Barry has whipped his top off. We let them walk a few steps in front of us.

Men with no tops on, even worse if they’re fat and covered in tattoos.

And that makes a difference? No, they're weasel words. You're still saying that dressing a certain way makes a person look like a "skank" - the dictionary definition being: "an insulting term used to describe an unhygienic, sleazy, or highly promiscuous person (most commonly directed at women). It implies a lack of morals, class, or cleanliness."

And all they've done for you to think they look "skanky" is to wear a mismatched bikini, & have dyed blonde hair with grown-out roots?

I don't like the styling - but the trousers themselves are very Katharine Hepburn, a woman who IMO always looked pretty damn fabulous.

The thread isn't really about wide-leg trousers though. I love them, you don't - I'm surprised that they're an item of clothing that people actively hate. But we all have different opinions on various clothing styles.
