What’s ‘cool’ at the minute for teenage girls (yr 9).

She probably knows, but I don't!

Blueeberry · 24/05/2026 00:47

Birkenstocks are the most popular sandals by far for teen girls nowadays

If She did, I wouldn’t be asking.

My 12 year old has these

I don't know if they're cool but she loves them!

Is she 12 going on 60..?! 😬

purpleme12 · 24/05/2026 01:17

She likes to be comfortable and cool in the warm weather

Sorry perhaps I shouldn't have posted those

OutOfSynnc · 24/05/2026 01:23

Maybe some trendy sneakers?

marriednotdead · 24/05/2026 05:54

It pains me to say this but Crocs! Also vintage style trainers eg Vans Knu Skool, DM gladiators or slides.

Bellavida99 · 24/05/2026 05:59

Trainers, Vans or cheap flip flops (literally the £1 Primark ones)

christ I’m nearly 50 and they’re not even cool for my age group!!

Walk down your local high street on a Saturday and look at what they’re all wearing. These things can be very regional or even school dependent (you only have to read posts about suitable school shoes and bags at the start of every year to realise it’s not always nationwide trend!)

Young people can wear anything though, and if it's ugly it just seems to make them look even more stylish.

I remember on here once, someone asked for opinions on some shoes and a response was "you're too young to need them but you're too old for them to look ironic" which I thought was funny!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/05/2026 07:31

My 14 year old wears Converse shoes, and Tevas when it’s really hot.

FirstdatesFred · 24/05/2026 07:46

Mine annoyingly don’t really want sandals, they just keep wearing their adidas gazelles

FirstdatesFred · 24/05/2026 07:47

My older one did have some chunky DM sandals a few years ago that were acceptable to her, but no idea if they’re a thing. I love my Birkenstocks madrid with one strap and have offered to get them some but I’ve probably made them uncool 😆

It was just a rude comment by a poster. Ignore it. Your daughter has.a right to wear whatever she wants and she is right that comfort is the most important in a shoe.
Is she likes them and is comfortable that's all that matters

Foofedifiknow · 24/05/2026 08:13

Another vote for converse

Candleabra · 24/05/2026 08:16

I see a lot of young people in DM sandals as “smart” sandals (ie when they’re not wearing sliders). They’re pretty chunky/heavy so not sure how comfy they are.
Agree they can get away with anything so walking sandals probably fine! Have a look at what other teenagers are wearing.

HobGobblynne · 24/05/2026 08:19

My year 9 will only come out of her campus into crocs which drives me mad, would love her to get some air to her feet every now and again 😂

craftycowbag · 24/05/2026 08:23

Where I am air force 1 trainers or crocs. At a push, DD would wear flip flops but sandals would be a firm no for day to day wear. A strappy heeled sandal would be for a night out only.

alwaysusethebiglight · 25/05/2026 05:29

Thanks all, she’s a converse girl and has asked for sandals. I’ll see what I can find.

Where I am, I see lots of teenagers changing into Birkenstocks after their Saturday netball game. (Lots of them also wear sliders and socks.) Some also wear sports sandals.

In the 90s, converse peep toe mules were popular among teenagers in the summer, indeed Meghan Markle wore them in that photo of her as a teenager outside the Palace, but I haven’t seen any for ages.

Stoicandhappy · 25/05/2026 05:58

Birkenstocks

Dewdust · 25/05/2026 09:49

Sports sandals are good because a 9 yr old wants to move around easily. They let the feet breathe and the wearer stays cool even while being active which ultimately makes them cool!
