Summer shoes or sandals for a teenager?

What’s ‘cool’ at the minute for teenage girls (yr 9).

@alwaysusethebiglight Does she not have any friends with fashion sense? Flip flops were popular and sliders.

alwaysusethebiglight · 25/05/2026 10:17

@MeetMeOnTheCornerno, no friends to ask and those her age she sees are usually in school shoes.

If I had a confident 14 yr old, who was confident enough to chose or tell me what she wanted, was around groups of friends to copy or loved going shopping, I wouldn’t have to ask on here.

Thank you to those being helpful, there’s just a few replies on here where it hasn’t occurred to people that not every 14 yr old is confident, independent or able to express a preference. I wish that was my experience too.

@alwaysusethebiglight Hmm. That’s a bit sad. My DDs always had friends. So she’s alone in the holidays? Anyway, flip flops or sliders. It’s pretty easy. Look at places like New Look or Zara and start inviting other DDs to meet up with yours. That’s a bigger concern than sandals!

alwaysusethebiglight · 25/05/2026 10:35

I’ll just google myself, I was just hoping for some recommendations.

@MeetMeOnTheCorneryes she’s alone in the holidays and inviting others over would be her worst nightmare. That’s not what this thread is about, but Jesus like my last post, not every child is the same.

Most seem to wear crocs around here.

marriednotdead · 24/05/2026 05:54

It pains me to say this but Crocs! Also vintage style trainers eg Vans Knu Skool, DM gladiators or slides.

Yes definitely the revolting croc round here, from toddlers to grannies

Sports sandals are good because a 9 yr old wants to move around easily. They let the feet breathe and the wearer stays cool even while being active which ultimately makes them cool!

OP's daughter is a teenager (in Y9 at school) - not a nine year old.

Where I am air force 1 trainers or crocs. At a push, DD would wear flip flops but sandals would be a firm no for day to day wear. A strappy heeled sandal would be for a night out only.

I hear AF1 are becoming popular again. Last 2 years it was all about Adidas.

alwaysusethebiglight · 25/05/2026 05:29

Thanks all, she’s a converse girl and has asked for sandals. I’ll see what I can find.

Cool: birkenstock for sure
Comfy and not badly uncool: teva
private school girls around her are big on comfort (empowered) so many wear teva

My just turned 15 year old is wearing these !

Besidemyselfwithworry · 25/05/2026 11:12

How about a trip to the shops and let her choose some? Do you have a big shopping centre near you, something like Bluewater or Meadowhall??
Maybe make a day of it and get some summery bits, let her try things on?

I know a lot of stuff is all online now but it’s not the same as a physical trip to the shops is it?

Shinyandnew1 · 25/05/2026 11:16

Birkenstocks-either the plastic Eva Madrid style or clogs.

ButterfliesnWaterfalls · 25/05/2026 11:21

Crocs are all the rage here - they’re comfy. You can also get these little things to put on them to personalise them.

My 14 year old DS got his in khaki green. You can get them from sports direct.

BeardySchnauzer · 25/05/2026 11:25

My 15yo wears Uggs!!

am taking some notes as I feel she’s going to be complaining soon enough!

Mumofyellows · 25/05/2026 11:26

Crocs, Birkenstock sandals or Bostons(v popular round here although not really sandals!) and trainers! DD is 23 and wears all of the above but when she was in year 9 I couldn’t get her any sandals, she was always in trainers.

MrsMitford3 · 25/05/2026 11:31

I think crocs or birkenstocks.

Crocs have a new sandal range she might like

She is wearing them in the heatwave? Thats fashion dedication, I can see my dd doing this.

Yep! I can’t help but respect that she has developed her own style and is confident enough to wear it - even if it is sometimes a bit odd!

she has a friend coming round later who is definitely a cool kid so will have a look at her shoes!!

fiolaveni · 25/05/2026 11:52

All the above have one thing in common, they are really bad for walking in them.

@MrsMitford3thanks, my daughters not keen on either but I think I’ll try a Birkenstock ish style. It’s a Mumsnet thing isn’t it, half the responses don’t actually answer the initial op, even one this simple, but that’s fine, everyone entitled to an opinion, even one that isn’t actually relevent!

Trainers, converse or crocs for my teen

BeardySchnauzer · 25/05/2026 16:40

Reporting back - cool girl was wearing trainers

asked dd what she would wear instead of Uggs and trainers and she said flip flops or slider type sandals (not rubber - can’t think what they are called)

I think pp is right that teen girls can get away with anything really but I understand it’s hard when they lack confidence in that area

OP I have one of those teens who just wears the latest trends in order to fit in. I understand. It will really depend on where you are and what her schoolmates are wearing. I have not seen my teen in anything other than trainers (Nike air max). Cheap primark flipflops on holiday. DM sandals were a thing for a while but not sure about this summer. I think Birkenstocks are a mum uniform?! Never seen any teens in them.
