Interailing summer dress

Hi I'm going to be inter-railing this summer. Its going to be hot and I'll have a rucksack. I'm looking for a bomb proof dress that can literally be screwed up and chucked in a bag for the evenings. I'm 56, 5ft 4 size 10 , decent boobs, nothing really above the knee pls. Cheap and needs to be able to be slung in a sink and wrung out to dry over night. Is there such a thing? thank you

It is a bit like a romper suit 🤣 but oh so comfortable and surprisingly flattering on my curves. I tried it on on a whim one day in John Lewis and was sold.

I actually like the look of both the longer version & the shorter.

But I suspect your curves might be more hourglass than mine, & therefore it suits you.

My weight increase seems to be all on my stomach. So I think I'd probably look a bit like Tweedledum & Tweedledee in it ...!!!

Just be careful the dress doesnt ride up with your rucksack and make sure your shoulders are protected from the rucksack straps. Also consider how the dress with work a sternum strap if you use one (I dont because I'm vain and they make my boobs look mad and my boobs are the only good thing about my body).

I think the OP has her daytime travel clothes (when she'll be wearing a backpack) already sorted?

She wants a dress for the evenings. One that's a bit prettier than standard travel garb, easy to throw in a rucksack, doesn't crease & will wash easily & dry quickly. One that she doesn't look like a tourist in!!

I think we need a dedicated thread for "what to pack for inter-railing".

For example, we're doing a rail holiday next year. Won't be backpacking as such but will be aiming to stick to cabin size cases. I can do the evening stuff but have no idea what we'd actually travel in!

Why not start one?!

The Uniqlo Dress is featured today on This Morning (airs about 2 hours 20 mins into the programme). Many posts about this dress (worn in brown on the TV)

"Wonderful fabric called Airism, a fabric that can breathe. If it becomes wet, if you become clammy, it just absorbs all of that moisture".

It's shown with a jacket worn over but you can see the lovely flow of the dress without a waist seam or darts it really just flows.

Having now felt this fabric in store, I’m not very keen! It’s sort of tent-like! Nice pockets but not very stretchy and doesn’t feel light or summery. I tried it on but really didn’t like it.

I am still on the lookout for a lightweight black, knee length, sleeveless (but not too strappy) crepe/cheesecloth type crinkle fabric dress. It’s so difficult to find!

I generally like Uniqlo but I'm convinced they spend their entire marketing budget on social media influencers and quite possibly daytime telly! The number of Insta (and MN...) posts I saw last year about their barrel leg trousers, it was insane! Those trousers were not that great 😁

TescoFiasco · 03/06/2026 11:20

I generally like Uniqlo too but I didn't like those Airism dresses either. Honestly I think it's all marketing spin - if it wasn't for all these claims of it being the perfect travel dress etc nobody would look twice at it. It just looks like a shiny polyester dress. Was so disappointed when I actually went in store to check it out!

And a universal plug to go with it! So many hotels/hostels etc. don't have a plug in the sink.

Easier to wash clothes/underwear when interrailing.

oh, I just launder stuff daily in the shower if I need something clean and hang over the taps, not thought of taking stuff with me to do this

This any good? Cheesecloth.

I quite like that, thank you-but think it’s a few inches too short. I want something that comes down to the bottom of my
knees. I think what I’m after must be an odd length!

92cm long for a size 12, so I thought if you were shorter than the model it might be just over the knee!

You might be best getting a midi & having it taken up a bit?

Shinyandnew1 · 03/06/2026 16:43

Ooh thank you, I will investigate those!
