What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe that you bought and still wear?

I’ve 50s/60s things from my mum and aunt and a few vintage-y bits but the oldest item I bought myself is a 501 denim jacket from 1995.

Also nice/quirky shoes from the early 2000s that occasionally come out including Jimmy Choos from 2002.

What do you have, that you bought for yourself, that still gets an outing? (I’m 53)

I've gone from a size 22 to a 10 so couldn't really keep much sadly.
But my regatta fleece jacket is 36 yrs old and has been my work coat every year through every size....it's magic!😆

Salopettes from C&A. They had a separate sports shop in Southampton. Late 90s Still excellent to wear on cold days.
DH has a Dave Bickers shirt from motor bike days.

JaceLancs · 09/05/2026 22:48

Lee denim shirt probably had 40 years - fond memories of wrapping DC in it when they were cold after a swim in the sea
Midnight blue velvet jacket 35+ years - goes with loads including jeans
I have loads of classic linen shirts and plain dresses which are 20+ years old and don’t date - mainly black white navy beige and pale blue

I have Tshirts I still wear from 92/93 but they’re starting to look threadbare. I regularly wear things from 20 years ago too now they’re back in fashion.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 11/05/2026 04:15

a black, belted, silk dress from 2012. It’s timeless in my opinion and still gets the occasional outing!

Watcher2026 · 11/05/2026 04:59

My mum bought me a t-shirt with my first pregnancy and at the time it was so comfy I couldn't stop wearing it and 20 years on 9 pregnancies later I still wear it to go to bed...the days when things were made to last haha

Marchintospring · 11/05/2026 05:07

Just yesterday I asked DS to guess how old the shirt I was wearing was - it was bought in 1990 !
I also still have a Just Seventeen sweatshirt that I bought from the magazine at 16. I don’t wear it much but it’s lovely. Batwing, 100% cotton and none of the graphic has come off.

LittleRoom · 11/05/2026 05:15

A band t shirt from 1995. It's shapeless and has a hole and a small oil stain sadly, but still comes out at music festivals.

Next is a denim jacket from Topshop in 2000. It had 70% off due to loose stitching under the armpit. I never did get round to restitching the loose seam, it never got any worse and it's been my go-to Spring/Summer jacket for 26 years now.

FlatErica · 11/05/2026 06:41

I’ve got a ribbed vest top from Clockhouse from the early 1980s that’s still going strong.

DundeeNewcastle · 11/05/2026 07:00

A Merrell raincoat I bought (recommended on mumsnet!) when now teenage DD was a baby. And a bodycon black dress from Reiss (2009) that will never fit me again but has survived all the culls as I wore it when DH proposed somewhere fancy.

I've moved house and countries a few times, and love a marie kondo declutter so not much else has stood the test of time.

railcardfan · 11/05/2026 07:02

I have two pairs of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes which are 35 years old and still get an occasional wearing. They are low heeled with bows on the front and I'm astonished to see that they are currently selling the same product on their website!

SoManyTshirts · 11/05/2026 11:03

Fake fur jacket from C&A for glam winter evenings - once or twice a year then. I’d guess it’s around 35 years old.

Madamblueshoes · 11/05/2026 11:22

I have a Burberry mac from 1993 still in excellent condition which I still wear. I remember going to London to buy it. Was a lot of money then but well worth it. Edit ... from 1983.

PortSalutPlease · 11/05/2026 11:30

I still have a pair of boots I’ve had since I was 14, and they’re still going strong. About 30 years old now. I also still have my baby cardie from when I was brought home from hospital, although it’s not something I still wear 🤣

VanityUnit66 · 11/05/2026 11:53

A brown cotton jumper from M&S from 2003. Such good quality and shows how M&S has declined over the years.

i have a cropped trench coat from top shop which from 2002. It still looks great.

Pendapala · 11/05/2026 12:05

An Armor Lux Breton top bought from a stall in Honfleur harbour when I was eleven. The stallholder told me it was great quality and would last for 20 years. That was in 1990….

WhatAMarvelousTune · 11/05/2026 12:09

A brown leather jacket that I bought when I was 18. It was very expensive for me at the time, but has lasted 15 years and is now so soft.

Starsaff · 11/05/2026 12:16

I have a big slouch jumper that I bought when I was about 12 out of littlewoods with some money I’d got for my birthday. I still wear it today. The looks gone off it but it’s still very cosy for about the house. I’m 49 now!

IjustbelieveinMe · 11/05/2026 12:21

a Keith Haring/Andy Warhol jumper from 1986 when I was 16. I still wear it now at the age of 53!

Mossstitch · 11/05/2026 12:27

50 year old pair of black leather boots from m & s, i have a bad habit of 'saving things for best' and hardly wearing them so they still look fairly new.
Baby cardi that all of my boys wore so that's over 42 years old but just a keepsake obviously🥰

Somethingsnapped · 11/05/2026 13:38

Love reading these!

I have a Whistles silk bias cut maxi skirt with a butterfly print, that I bought nearly 30 years ago. It's beautiful, and it was one of a few things that I couldn't bear to part with when I put on weight, and so put it aside for my daughters. It now fits again (just)!

Also a couple of very light cotton ponchos from Jigsaw from about the same time. They've seen me through many pregnancies, plenty of weight gain and loss, and still going strong!

My daughter is wearing some of my old things from the late 90s too.

StylishAndBeautiful · 11/05/2026 13:47

A coat from the 1990s. I have other things but I doubt I'd fit into them.My feet have gone up a size since then. My weight is the same but I no longer have a tiny waist.

Meadowfinch · 11/05/2026 13:51

An Escada Couture evening dress I bought in 1996 to go to a palace ball. I still wear it if I have the chance (few opportunities) and it still fits.

thisoldcity · 11/05/2026 14:16

I have a pair of Levis from 1988 and they still fit!

StylishAndBeautiful · 11/05/2026 14:37

I have a swimsuit from the 1980s but the elastic has perished.
