DS2's First Holy Communion is in June. Mass and then a party in the local hall. All quite casual.

I've seen this dress. I love it๐Ÿ˜ and would wear it on multiple occasions. How can I make it work for this one?

Bigearringsbigsmile · 03/05/2026 00:01

I don't think it's at all appropriate sorry. Realky inappropriate in fact.

I love it and as a practising Catholic who has attended many Communions, I really cant see anything wrong with it.

HermioneGrangersHair · 03/05/2026 00:09

Itโ€™s an ok dress if thatโ€™s your usual style I think, but it doesnโ€™t say โ€˜Juneโ€™ or โ€˜celebrationโ€™ to me.
(If only the model would stand properly! )

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/05/2026 00:14

I think the shoes are distracting. I was thinking of something flatter, more colourful and more comfortable.

It's the styling that makes it so goth.

Bare legs and some pretty, strappy sandals (and softer hair of course) would work nicely.

MonetsLilac · 03/05/2026 00:20

I was going to say, buy the shoes as well! It would look better in purple, imo, but if you like it, go for it. I doubt it'll upset the Vatican.

I agree, the styling makes it more goth than it is.

Could I get away with trainers? Or is that too much?๐Ÿ™ˆ

Nooo! Not trainers! Something more dramatic. In bright red patent.

maudelovesharold · 03/05/2026 00:34

The dress is lovely. Hate the shoes, hate the belt. Lots of positive reviews as a special occasion dress, and someone bought it to go to a wedding. I could imagine the right trainers with the dress! Just don't walk round contorting your hips wildly and doing sultry looks over your shoulder and youโ€™ll be grand!

I have 40s heel, red suede shoes with roses on them that will be amazing with that dress.

But not for DS's FHC, where i will be doing food, organising transport, queueing for photos and sorting out tea and coffee for all the aunties and uncles. I need trainers functional shoes for this one. The red high ๐Ÿ‘  can wait in their box in the back of the wardrobe for a more glam, taxi occassion..๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I don't like the belt either.

Trainers will look awful with that dress. To make it work for the occasion you need to smarten it up and downplay the Gothness. Flat ballerinas in a bright colour. I agree bright red or green patent.

corblimeygvnr · 03/05/2026 02:23

It's just awful and not suitable. Why would you make your daughter's event about you because you know people will ?

I dont really want to go red. Do you think orange would work?

The espadrilles look too down to earth, hippy vibe for the dress.

The dress itself doesn't strike me as the perfect choice for the event.

LikeGolddust · 03/05/2026 03:01

I donโ€™t mind the dress but I donโ€™t think itโ€™s suitable for a first holy communion either as the colour is too dark. Traditionally light, pastel, neutral colours are worn.
Perhaps the green appears lighter in person/when styled differently which makes it more suitable.

I hope itโ€™s a lovely day though.

waowwwwww · 03/05/2026 03:18

Trainers? wtf. It looks cheap and sweaty

GarlicMind · 03/05/2026 03:35

Yes to the orange espadrilles. Or the royal blue ones!

GarlicMind · 03/05/2026 03:41

I want you to wear a black lace mantilla to fully channel your Addams Family Goes To Church vibe ๐Ÿ˜‰ And blood-red lipstick with very sharp outlines.

But, no, it won't look gothic if you wear it as a normal dress. It'll look reasonably 'sober' for the occasion.

goldenhunter · 03/05/2026 05:45

I think bright colours would cheapen it. Itโ€™s a lovely dress. Iโ€™d wear it with tan wedges or flats, and do soft eye make up with a nice lipstick. Hope FHC goes well!!

Agreed.

it looks like a fancy dress costume. Dreadful. Iโ€™d completely rethink the outfit OP.
