Don't want to look like Highland Mortitia Adams.

DS2's First Holy Communion is in June. Mass and then a party in the local hall. All quite casual.

I've seen this dress. I love it๐Ÿ˜ and would wear it on multiple occasions. How can I make it work for this one?

I donโ€™t think trainers or espadrilles or anything would work with that dress. And ballet flats only if youโ€™re very slim and the dress ends in a good place, not mid calf

Maybe itโ€™s not the ideal dress as it doesnโ€™t suit the need for practical footwear, much as you love it

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/05/2026 01:14

I have 40s heel, red suede shoes with roses on them that will be amazing with that dress.

But not for DS's FHC, where i will be doing food, organising transport, queueing for photos and sorting out tea and coffee for all the aunties and uncles. I need trainers functional shoes for this one. The red high ๐Ÿ‘  can wait in their box in the back of the wardrobe for a more glam, taxi occassion..๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

I feel your pain. Wedges as pp have said?

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 03/05/2026 06:24

Why wouldnโ€™t this dress be appropriate?

Itโ€™s perfectly fine imo.

But I wouldnโ€™t go with particularly bright colours either. That might be somewhat garish and could still end up surprisingly goth-y, especially red! (Red and black are the two colours I personally definitely wouldnโ€™t pick, tbhโ€ฆ)

I think Iโ€™d pick a slightly muted second colour / similar shades of one second colour, shoes and bags donโ€™t need to be perfect matches, just in the same colour family.
what kind of shoes and accessories do you already own? You might not need to buy anything else.

Combine with soft, fairly natural makeup and this would have considerably less morticia vibes.

ah, and I wouldnโ€™t wear black tights. Sheer nude or bare leggedโ€ฆ

Beetlejuice3 · 03/05/2026 06:55

Iโ€™m goth and I hate to tell you all, we donโ€™t change to bright colours for the sake of others and do attend events in our usual attire. Nothing wrong with looking like a highland morticia Addams!
however I can see if you donโ€™t usually wear that kind of thing it might look strange, but I do think this can be dressed down with sandals and nude make up and look entirely fine. Itโ€™s a lovely dress OP and I donโ€™t think itโ€™s inappropriate at all

I agree, the styling makes it more goth than it is.

Could I get away with trainers? Or is that too much?๐Ÿ™ˆ

Thus and trainers- not great. Itโ€™s a very wintry, gothic dress for a summer day event?

HereAndNo · 03/05/2026 07:05

The dress is fine OP. Esp if it is your normal โ€˜lookโ€™?

highlandponymummy · 03/05/2026 07:07

Love it ๐Ÿฅฐ

corblimeygvnr · 03/05/2026 13:21

Yet your title of the thread says you do know what is wrong with it . Don't pretend.

DarkForces · 03/05/2026 13:26

I'd be worried about it being too warm in June especially if I was expecting to move about. It's more a dress for winter

Thank you, Its definitely "my look". I usually wear empress line or dropped waist dresses (in green and blue) with trainers/sandals or boots.

The dress itself quite floaty and light.

I love your description of Highlands Morticia Adams๐Ÿ˜‚

MidnightFanta · 03/05/2026 13:42

That dress is absolutely gorgeous!

LaurieFairyCake · 03/05/2026 14:11

Great for winter, too dark a colour palette for June

MulberryPeony · 03/05/2026 14:17

Some of the other photos show how long the points of the dress are. Be careful with flats if you arenโ€™t tall or youโ€™ll spend the day stepping on the hems.

BakeOffRewatch · 03/05/2026 14:22

The print on the fabric is paganism symbology though, in the description it says witchโ€™s knots. I think that would be noticeable on the mum of the child having communion and in future photos? The dress is lovely otherwise and if it was โ€œjust a green tartan dressโ€ thereโ€™s absolutely nothing inappropriate about it. Maybe the other commenters noticed the symbol when they considered its appropriateness. Havenโ€™t seen it mentioned in the comments yet so thought Iโ€™d post.

Ophir · 03/05/2026 14:23

Iโ€™ve thought more. Whilst I love the dress, I think it could look quite odd and hot if itโ€™s a warm day

i do like Disturbia, and they have some lovejy quirky prints which would look more summery but keep your style. And allow chunkier shoes

Calling it a "witch's knot" is marketing. It's a very common Celtic knot.

No, not in the slightest. I didn't notice that and don't know anything about pagan symbols. It just looks more like a going out in the evening dress than for the intended occasion.

Gettingbysomehow · 03/05/2026 17:33

Ghastly and ten times worse with trainers.
Totally inappropriate for a first communion.
Looks like you are coming as a witch.
Havent you got anything more low key in your wardrobe?

The Celtic knots? Iโ€™ve seen these on crosses, Irish dance dresses etc. (and Iโ€™m neither Irish nor Scottish, btw).

It wouldnโ€™t have occurred to me to consider this a specifically pagan or otherwise inappropriate symbol in the context of OP attending her DSโ€™s communion.

That was the first thing I noticed and I didnโ€™t think very appropriate either. There are so many other dresses out there to choose from.

Lifelover16 · 03/05/2026 21:46

It might be appropriate with the right footwear.
But I think the fabric looks like cheap sweaty/scratchy polyester.

Looks like a form of the Triquetra to me, which was a Celtic pagan symbol adopted by the Catholic Church in Ireland to explain the trinity,
Totally appropriate
