Wedding Guest Outfit - BOLD dress code

RascalQueen · 29/04/2026 16:22

Wedding in August. Garden wedding, not going to be huge but one half is Irish.

I'm planning on wearing some gold block heels (no stilettos becuase of the garden).

The dress code is BOLD. Now, I'm more of a classic wedding guest dresser so this has thrown me a bit.

I'm 5'4'', blonde balayage hair, blue eyes (do not suit purples, yellows or orange). Late 30's, size 12-14 with a bit of a mum-tum.

I have ordered this jumpsuit but I don't love it - very heavy polyester which might not be great in August: https://www.nobodyschild.com/products/nc-x-lisou-pink-crepe-one-shoulder-jay-draped-jumpsuit-p255571pnk?_gl=15643js_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgr_NBhDFARIsAHiUWr4LtMTBA6jYu3cfM27m_iEhgVf8WFMb3aHtg4MEN0RaQE522HBYUqkaAjP_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&gbraid=0AAAAADQCJIUMRZZKn5E7qngOHFvwhROfq

There is also a part of me that's considering turning myself into a human disco ball:

Option 2: https://www.asos.com/arrange/arrange-embellished-sequin-cami-midi-dress-with-full-skirt-in-soft-pink/prd/209554508#ctaref-product_share_native

I know some people hate dress codes, but they are such a fun couple that I really want to do the dress code proud and have some fun.

Thanks everyone. I love how everyone has so many different opinions on the dress code and outfit suggestions. I love that sequin jumpsuit - it actually came up on my Vinted yesterday but unfortunately in a size 8.

Have you decided what you are going to wear?

Pineapples123 · 01/05/2026 12:43

OP I got a very very similar jumpsuit from Karen Millen last week- fits like a dream and is really nice material. Might be an option if you’re looking for something similar

Avoid anything polyester, it’ll be really uncomfortable. The Farm Rio is gorgeous, just wonder how much linen creasing you’d get.

PhaedraTwo · 30/04/2026 08:36

I read "bold" as something completely different and standout. A one shoulder jumpsuit isn't "bold" regardless of the colour. My go to for bold would be Klements, already posted, Kindred of Ireland or possibly Sister Jane

https://kindredofireland.com/products/gold-dress
https://kindredofireland.com/products/bow-dress

That dress is hideous. Looks like the doll my granny used to hide her toilet rolls under!
all those tiers will make anyone not a stick insect look like a mountain.

I think you are on the right lines with the pink jumpsuit, the dresses are lovely but aren’t bold in colour

The Farm Rio is basically the same colour and it’s not polyester!

I was meaning the sequin ones the OP was looking at

I would have taken it to mean bright colours I'd wear this in red

Just a word of warning since I didn’t see anyone mention it yet… those dresses with the large, hanging sequins that you’ve linked to tend to make a LOT of noise. Depending on the thickness of the sequins they’ll either tinkle or clatter constantly with every little movement. I personally wouldn’t wear one to a wedding because I wouldn’t want to be holding my breath to keep my dress from interrupting someone’s speech. They also shed sequins everywhere throughout the evening. 😅

And some chave where the upper arm meets sequins…

The more I look at these the more I dislike the jumpsuit and the more I like the 2 dresses. Please let us know what you finally choose.

I would take bold to refer to the colour rather than style.
Not sure where you are from but, in Ireland definitely an effort is put into wedding attire, not something you would wear casually. I have been to weddings where the American and English guests were more casually dressed in outfits that we would wear day and daily.

I think first and foremost you want the chosen outfit to be something thatakes you feel good and makes you smile when you look in the mirror.

Look at makes like closet london. Joli moi, never fully dressed, girl in mind (this is a bit more casual but lovely never the less).
Next online has lots of dresses for weddings and you can filter to wedding guest. Sleeve length, length etc. I did this and ordered about 40 dresses and found "the one" and noone else was wearing it at the wedding which was good

BigOldBlobsy · 02/05/2026 07:06

springbloomz · 29/04/2026 18:02

Agreed ^ Never Fully Dressed have some lovely bold outfits

I actually don’t mind the asos dresses, jumpsuit is okay. Depends on how you pull it off. Never Fully Dressed is a great place to start though

GenieGenealogy · 03/05/2026 08:34

Agree. That or pattern.

ForCosyLion · 29/04/2026 19:31

I think the exact opposite! 🤣 The jumpsuit is garish imo and the cut looks huge and silly. Option 1 Asos is fun but opportunities to wear it will be limited. I think Option 2 Asos is GORGEOUS!

I have seen option 2 on a wedding guest recently and I have to say it was beautiful on her and to be honest stole the show.

ruethewhirl · 03/05/2026 17:45

ForCosyLion · 30/04/2026 06:57

And why are so many dresses soooooo long these days? It's like we're going back to the Victorian era. I blame Kate Middleton. Her dresses are usually down to her ankles, like a nun.

And if you don't want to dress like someone from an oil painting, then you have to have something that only comes down to mid-thigh! All the normal-length dresses and skirts seem to have disappeared. I'm five foot four, and thirty years ago you could easily get lengths that touched the knee or were just an inch or two below - i.e. a normal length - but now you have to either drown yourself in fabric or show the world your contours!!! And don't get me started on how foul most patterns are. Virtually all of them look like granny's curtains.

I've clearly woken up on the wrong side of the bed!

But while I'm at it, why do they make the models do so many silly poses? I can't see what the clothes look like when the model is jumping or flinging her arms or crouched over or photographed sideways. AND, Boden and Marks are shocking for Photoshopping models to look insanely underweight. Quite apart from all the health and societal issues that this creates, I CAN'T SEE WHAT THE CLOTHES ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE WHEN THE MODEL IS DISTORTED BY FUCKING PHOTOSHOP!

Here's an example I just grabbed from Marks. Look at the distortion.

Couldn't agree more. One of my pet hates is dresses or skirts shown with the model bending one knee so you can't get a proper sense of how the skirt falls when standing still. So many dress/skirt images are like this, too, I've no idea why they do it!

FantasiaTurquoise · 03/05/2026 18:32

Careful with jumpsuits - anything with a back zip makes going to the loo impossible without help! Whistles have a nice linen red dress atm. My favourite for bold garden-party style dresses is pretty kitty.

ForCosyLion · 03/05/2026 18:36

Omg, the colour is SO garish, but you're right about the better cut.
