Wedding Guest Outfit - BOLD dress code

RascalQueen · 29/04/2026 16:22

Wedding in August. Garden wedding, not going to be huge but one half is Irish.

I'm planning on wearing some gold block heels (no stilettos becuase of the garden).

The dress code is BOLD. Now, I'm more of a classic wedding guest dresser so this has thrown me a bit.

I'm 5'4'', blonde balayage hair, blue eyes (do not suit purples, yellows or orange). Late 30's, size 12-14 with a bit of a mum-tum.

I have ordered this jumpsuit but I don't love it - very heavy polyester which might not be great in August: https://www.nobodyschild.com/products/nc-x-lisou-pink-crepe-one-shoulder-jay-draped-jumpsuit-p255571pnk?_gl=15643js_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQjwgr_NBhDFARIsAHiUWr4LtMTBA6jYu3cfM27m_iEhgVf8WFMb3aHtg4MEN0RaQE522HBYUqkaAjP_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&gbraid=0AAAAADQCJIUMRZZKn5E7qngOHFvwhROfq

There is also a part of me that's considering turning myself into a human disco ball:

Option 2: https://www.asos.com/arrange/arrange-embellished-sequin-cami-midi-dress-with-full-skirt-in-soft-pink/prd/209554508#ctaref-product_share_native

I know some people hate dress codes, but they are such a fun couple that I really want to do the dress code proud and have some fun.

Not the point of the thread - and I really do hope you find a suitable outfit OP, but I hate dress codes like this for weddings. Just let people wear what they have/what they want/what they're comfortable in. This might be outing but we have a wedding this Summer with a 'purple' dress code. The bride loves purple apparently - and to add to the pain, purple accessories (like a bag or tie) isn't enough - we have to really embrace it!! FFS.

I think a theme is quite useful in this day and age. Theres so many choices people like guidance on type of outfit expected.

Having said that, I can see colour theming is a massive PITA. No way would I wear a purple dress normally - makes me either look sallow or like a bar of Cadburys. It would be complete waste of time and money to buy a dress I’d feel uncomfortable in.

On the day, the bride will neither notice nor care.
Just wear what you want.
I certainly wouldn’t play along, particularly after being informed that a purple handbag only won’t do the job.

pambeesleyhalpert · 30/04/2026 18:35

The first one is gorgeous!

I would have read bold as referring to bold colours not style.

Same!

I went to a wedding with the dress code of 'Glamorous'. I asked on MN as wasn't sure I was on track and got everything from wear white tie, catwork model style, Oscar evening gowns! I hate ambiguous wedding dress codes!

Pliudev · 30/04/2026 19:02

Have a look at Sahara, particularly when the sale is on or on Vinted. Bold colours but wearable.

SlightlyVintage · 30/04/2026 19:22

The dresses are a bit iffy. I like the jump suit! I’d never wear that colour but navy is bold for me! I’d be looking for something I could wear again. The dresses are expensive and don’t look it.

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 30/04/2026 19:41

If you want the disco ball look Rosa Bloom is where you should go - great quality, properly lined inside

In terms of BOLD my first thought was La Double J but I can't see anything that I really like currently.

Alemais is a good shout & Olivia Rubin has dresses for rental if your size is not in stock 😍

ORPHEA - SEQUIN JUMPSUIT

Serotonin in jumpsuit form.  Wide legs, a nipped-in waist, and thousands of hand-stitched sequins adorn every inch.  • FIT: the top half gathers into a nipped-in non-stretch waist. The gently tailored cut skims the hips, before flowing into a flatterin...

I would have taken it to mean bright colours I'd wear this in red

LOVE THE JUMPSUIT!

Love the sequin jumpsuit!

Love the pink jumpsuit. It fits the brief perfectly.

I love this - I would class this as bold based on my normal dress but maybe not bold enough though

That's lovely. I would wear that with a bright Pink cross body bag (bought from a charity shop, if I wouldn't use it again)

Re the dress code of Glamorous. What did the guests actually wear to that wedding? I'd love to know!

Jumpsuit is a stunner. Bride will love it

Hadalifeonce · Yesterday 09:13

Check out Never Fully Dressed, they have very colourful dresses.

I agree. I mean, there are some stunning outfits suggested on here, but I can't imagine being so arrogant as to dictate (or even ask for) other people's clothing choices. What goes through people's heads when they do this? Other than photos and socials, of course. It's truly bonkers.

RedFluffyElephant · Yesterday 09:23

I think the dresses are nice and bold, which is what you were looking for. I would wear the jumpsuit to any occasion as all my clothes are very bright anyway.

Most wore normal, smart cocktail type dresses/suits. No long ball gowns or white tie things MN had suggested. My friend had a little, sequined bolero over her strappy dress and another guest commented that is was bit over the top!

Thanks! I always wonder how many guests really adhere to the dress code. The weddings I've been to haven't had a dress code, thank goodness, and people mostly wear smart day outfits. Suggestions on MN are often a bit out of kilter with my experience.

OP, you sound as if you have the style and confidence to carry off the sequins. I like the pink jumpsuit, it's striking, but the Rosa Bloom sequin jumpsuit looks great.

Most weddings I’ve attended either had an explicit or “obvious” dress code guests just stuck to (either consciously or subconsciously)…

Established dress codes (as in: black tie, white tie, tenue de ville etc.)? Those are quite easy. We know what that means. But “bold”, “glamorous” or “chic”? 🤷‍♀️

I do quite dislike to concept of a colour coded dress code, tbh.
I’ve only attended one colour coded wedding (up to now). Shades of blue and / or green, which was fine (for me).

But I would have really struggled if the colours had been yellow and orange! Those are definitely not my colours…😅 and I’m sure some guests felt the same for blue and green.

I also dislike how colour coding seems to primarily affect female guests. Or would the couple really expect (all) male guests to show up in pink or sage green suits?

It's very pretty but I wouldn't class that as anything near bold.

Thanks everyone. I love how everyone has so many different opinions on the dress code and outfit suggestions. I love that sequin jumpsuit - it actually came up on my Vinted yesterday but unfortunately in a size 8.
