Have you done your wardrobe switch?

Gave done the majority of my switch today. Goodbye jumpers and thermals and hello summer dresses.

Live in a tiny cottage so I’ve still got some jumpers out but I’m switching to vacuum and wardrobe

Cyclingmummy1 · 19/04/2026 19:14

Sorry of because we've been abroad over Easter but it's now quite warm enough yet for the full switch. I've put my winter wool trousers away and taken the fleece out of my Berghaus.

clary · 19/04/2026 18:39

I've done mine – tho tbh I don't wear big jumpers and still wear hoodies in spring and summer. So basically I have put away a couple of definitely winter dresses and got out some definitely summer ones.

Btw can I clarify the phrase “Ne’er cast a clout till may is out” – nothing much to do with the month of May (so it doesn't mean keep wearing your big coat until May begins or even ends – not clear what “out” means in that context is it?) – it means “until the mayflower, so the bloom of the hawthorn, is out” – because this is a guide to how warm the spring is. The earlier it is out, the warmer it is (and hence you no longer need your big coat and your boots). It’s called “may” bc that's when it came out, historically. Now it’s much more likely to be out in April; tho tbf I haven’t seen any yet.

(Still cast many clouts quite a while ago tho. But then I am old, drive to work, and my office is very overheated.)

Edited

I read this about the may (flower) but then read something else maintaining that the phrase does actually refer to the month of May.

Anyway, I think it’s safe now to pack away Big Jumpers and Heavyweight Winter Coat and, possibly, boots… but fleeces, leggings, vests - nah. Still going!

Bunionbandit · 19/04/2026 19:16

I partially did it last weekend as it’s not that warm yet in Scotland. I usually do it all in one go in April & October every year. All my heavy weight jumpers/fleeces, cords & thick thermals are into storage bags for going up the loft. I’ve kept my lightweight marino wool jumpers & lightweight short sleeve thermal under layers out. Haven’t taken out the real summer or holiday clothes from their storage bags yet. I’ll do that next week. It’s good to have the extra room in my drawer’s & wardrobe.

I wouldn’t normally do it in stages like this but we’ve had really cold wet rubbish weather in Easter this year in Scotland.

I’ve also filled two bags for the charity shop. I use the summer/winter wardrobe edit as a wardrobe review at the same time, so anything I haven’t worn or don’t like anymore gets sent to the charity shop.

wendywoopywoo222 · 19/04/2026 19:17

I’ve never done this and didn’t know it was a thing. I wear less layers in the summer but lots of the same clothes. I work on the one in one out principle and my drawers are Marie Kondo’ed so never run out of room.

KatharinaRosalie · 19/04/2026 19:23

No, too cold still.
But yes I always swap clothes around seasonally. Also great opportunity to go through everything and sort out things I didn't wear.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 19/04/2026 19:24

I don't do this, for the same reason that I never take the electric blanket off the bed: Reynaud's syndrome.

Autumn38 · 19/04/2026 20:01

Yep I did it when we had that hot spell and then regretted it for a while! Now I’m happily in my spring/summer clothes and loving it!

Allseeingallknowing · 19/04/2026 20:12

ainsleysanob · 19/04/2026 19:02

Absolutely. Do you not get a little rush of excitement when you find something you’d forgotten about?! It’s almost as if you’ve bought it twice!

That has actually happened!

Campbellcarrotsoup · 19/04/2026 20:16

i've just done it. I don't have masses of wardrobe space which impacts as well. even just putting away winter coats creates a lot of extra space.

I've been doing it for the last few years but i quite enjoy the ritual now.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 19/04/2026 20:19

Yes did mine yesterday, and managed to put aside a bag for the charity shop and a bag to sell. I have so many clothes I'd love to be like other posters on here who can fit it all in at once!

Allseeingallknowing · 19/04/2026 20:20

lollylo · 19/04/2026 19:07

I live and work in the north. So absolutely not. I won’t be casting a clout until may is out or nearly out

In the north wearing shorts in freezing temperatures is normal. We’re ’ard oop ‘ere!

Tenniswhites · 19/04/2026 20:24

I made a start this morning-long sleeve T shirts, thinner jumpers & linen trousers etc which can be layered. The heavy winter jumpers etc put away. The high summer items won’t make an appearance for a while yet.

I’ve always swapped my clothes around-lucky enough to now have a spare room with plenty of wardrobe & cupboard space but previously would lug the cases in and out of the loft. I love the feeling of the change over, almost a new beginning. Also
found a couple of items I’d completely forgotten about which is a bonus.

dudsville · 19/04/2026 20:27

I used to love e the day of the wardrobe switch! I'd get everything out, do a big try on, end up with bags for the charity shops. Nowadays, like some others on here, I have a smaller wardrobe and there's room for everything. I have a section for folded jumpers and cardigans, it's lined with a vast array of anti moth stuff. But also, I love in the south, so even my summer dresses get worn on occasion out of season with boots and knitwear.

I am looking forward to sandal season though op, I'm tired of being layered up!

B0D · 19/04/2026 20:28

Really need to now but haven’t got time. Maybe next weekend

Beachwalker66 · 19/04/2026 20:29

MediumHigh · 19/04/2026 17:03

I have separate wardrobes for each season.
I can't believe others haven't thought of this?

Really?

And if you only have room for one normal size wardrobe…..?

I have sort of swapped, but I feel the cold dreadfully and wouldn’t go out without a jacket or cardi until it’s about 23 degrees.

SurferRona · 19/04/2026 20:41

Kinda did this on Easter weekend…. Took away Big Coats and most Long Boots and Heavy Bloody Warm Jumpers, then we had a frost ofc 🙄. Have rotated dresses (vacuum packed some and into attic eaves) and summery ones more in sight 🙌. Felt great, but I’ll still no doubt reach for jeans, vests and jumpers for day, and oodie for sofa evenings🤣. I did swap out straight for wide flare jeans this weekend and that felt springier. Fantastic knowledge @clary about clouts and May!!!! 👏👏👏 Loads of blackthorn been and gone here (south) not a lot of hawthorn as yet.

Or the next, or never !

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/04/2026 20:48

It’s still cold here (NE Scotland), most days not yet ten or over, so I am in a kind of mid-point. I’ve vacuum packed really heavy knits, and moved things like my big puffer coat to the rear of the coat cupboard, but I think it’s a while away from bringing down the linen trews and summer frocks.

Thanks for the explanation.
However, if the flower is not out yet, the advice is still valid isn't it.

I walk to work and at 8am it's often still very cold.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/04/2026 21:01

"wouldn’t go out without a jacket or cardi until it’s about 23 degrees."

What? I wouldn't go out without a jacket or cardi until it's 33 degrees, considering the morning and evenings are cooler.
I won't be sleeveless until about 28 degrees.

Fine line between hard and stupid.

Don’t include myself in that, I hasten to say. I’m still wearing vests!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/04/2026 19:09

I’ve never switched my wardrobe. We don’t have consistent enough weather at any time of year to not need a jumper one day and a T-shirt the next.

I have summer jumpers. My massive ones with the turtle necks aren't needed in even the coldest summers.

Where do you live to get 33 C? Marbella or something?
