Gave done the majority of my switch today. Goodbye jumpers and thermals and hello summer dresses.

It was 3 degrees here this morning. I had a scarf on, so, no

It was 19 degrees for me a couple of days ago, but I will still need my winter clothes for a few weeks or months yet.

Never cast a clout till MAY is out!

My first thought when I saw this thread! Or One swallow doesn’t make a summer…

TheChosenTwo · 19/04/2026 18:13

I don’t do this. I just lose the tights in the summer and maybe don’t wear a thermal base layer under all my top layers but most of my clothes can be worn all year round layering up or down as necessary.

No. I've lost loads of weight since last summer and nothing will fit. I need a whole new summer wardrobe, which sounds like a fun problem to have but it isn't. I am sick to death of going round and round the shops and finding absolutely nothing that I want to buy. Nothing. I've never known the shops full of such a dull and uninspiring, poor quality pile of crap. It's utterly depressing out there.

Edited

Vinted may be better. I find it so much easier than proper shops. And it’s sufficiently cheap that I’m happy to get a 50/50 success rate and send the rest to charity shop.

The what??

This!

Neuronimo · 19/04/2026 18:21

I'm holding out, as have been caught out by a false Spring before. I have more trans seasonal this, as year I am decluttering. Quite a few nice fitted shirts/blouses and tank tops these days, as layers are easier.

I've had to go into sensible shoes with custom orthotics, so I am thinking of drastically reducing dresses and skirts. Might not feel too glam these days, but am aiming for well put together and comfortable.

aintnospringchicken · 19/04/2026 18:23

No,all my clothes stay in the wardrobe or drawers all year round.
I obviously don’t own as many clothes as some people . Don’t have huge wardrobes either.

Even in France it's too early:

En avril, - Ne te découvre pas d'un fil, - En mai, - Fais ce qu'il te plaît!

(Don't take anything off in April, do what you want in May).

ainsleysanob · 19/04/2026 18:27

My clothes, of which there are many, will remain hung, tightly packed, squashed and barely visible for the entirety of the year. I’m not wasting half a day on a weekend jizzing about with the clothes in my wardrobe!

HollyhockDays · 19/04/2026 18:27

It’s still too cold to really do to. I am going to go through the bag tonight though and might pop some stuff that doesn’t fit on Vinted.

Are you my twin?

I still have my electric overblanket and sofa blanket going! I don't find it warm enough to ditch the Winter clothes just yet.... "Ne'er cast a clout 'til May is out"

I live on my own, so I just swop the Winter clothes from my bedroom to the spare room and vice versa for the Summer stuff. No packing away. Never had moths or anything, YET!

FolioQuarto · 19/04/2026 18:35

I didn't know this was a thing (unless there is a lack of storage).

My clothes all live in my cupboard and chest of drawers year round. Who knows when I might want a t-shirt as an extra layer under a jumper, or a jumper for a chilly evening in the summer.

Abzs · 19/04/2026 18:37

Nope. Not in Aberdeenshire. Ne'er cast a clout 'til May be out. (It isn't, not even in the warm spots in the village).
Local weatherman predicting hard frosts over then next couple of weeks.

clary · 19/04/2026 18:39

I've done mine – tho tbh I don't wear big jumpers and still wear hoodies in spring and summer. So basically I have put away a couple of definitely winter dresses and got out some definitely summer ones.

Btw can I clarify the phrase “Ne’er cast a clout till may is out” – nothing much to do with the month of May (so it doesn't mean keep wearing your big coat until May begins or even ends – not clear what “out” means in that context is it?) – it means “until the mayflower, so the bloom of the hawthorn, is out” – because this is a guide to how warm the spring is. The earlier it is out, the warmer it is (and hence you no longer need your big coat and your boots). It’s called “may” bc that's when it came out, historically. Now it’s much more likely to be out in April; tho tbf I haven’t seen any yet.

(Still cast many clouts quite a while ago tho. But then I am old, drive to work, and my office is very overheated.)

isthismylifenow · 19/04/2026 18:42

Not yet, but probably at the end of the month it will happen.

Mine is the other way around, packing up the summer clothes and taking out winter jumpers and jackets.

I have way more winter items that summer, so I don't have space for both.

Although being single and having the ex's wardrobe to myself as well is one of the greatest gifts.

Neuronimo · 19/04/2026 18:47

My Mum always said a clout was a vest! I have just learned today that it is all warm clothes!

Yes. Last weekend. Gaos filled this week. Just need a pair of sandals and I am sorted

Do you often open your wardrobe and have things fall out, then instead of hanging them neatly, you simply jab at them with your fingers into a small gap until they stay put? If so, then yes, yes I think we are!

Exactly that, sometimes things emerge that I’ve forgotten about!

Absolutely. Do you not get a little rush of excitement when you find something you’d forgotten about?! It’s almost as if you’ve bought it twice!

Squirrelchops1 · 19/04/2026 19:06

Sod that. I didn't take my 9 together duvet off in the heatwave we had a couple of years ago 🤣🤣

lollylo · 19/04/2026 19:07

I live and work in the north. So absolutely not. I won’t be casting a clout until may is out or nearly out

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/04/2026 19:09

I’ve never switched my wardrobe. We don’t have consistent enough weather at any time of year to not need a jumper one day and a T-shirt the next.

quirkychick · 19/04/2026 19:11

I swap things over gradually, as the weather is changeable. So, I've put away some heavy, wool jumpers and thick trousers mostly. I keep lightweight jumpers out all year round, as we still need them in summer!

I do like swapping things out, as I don't have lots of clothes, but it feels like I have new ones when I get the next lot out. It's also a good chance to declutter what I have or haven't worn before I put it away.
