My hands age me!

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 15/04/2026 13:58

I have a photo to share, I’m presuming it will take a wee while to get approved.

Look at the back of my hand, both hands are like this. None of my similar aged friends have hands like this. What TF is it?

Can I do anything about it?

Are they liver/age spots? They’re often worse in people who have spent a lot of time in the sun.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 15/04/2026 14:08

Wear sunscreen on your hands.

Clarins Restorative hand cream ( in the red tube) is good for keeping age spots at bay.

LoveYouPickle · 15/04/2026 14:16

Yes age spots! Bastards. I use azalic
acid (sp) and tretinoin at night and mineoook much better. Still wrinklier than I'd like but I am 54 so...

They look very similar last to my hands. I’m 48. How old are you OP?

RomeoOscarXrayXray · 15/04/2026 14:39

I’m 48 too! Don’t spend a lot of time in the sun (I burn too easily) and don’t like the heat.

If you’re pale and burn then even just going outside can promote melanocytes in your hands causing age spots. Protect them with spf each day as part of your routine.

I have these on my neck and wear Hijab, so it's never exposed to the sun. I think there's an element of genetics at play too sadly.

Mine are awful, far too much time in the sun over the years

Breadcat24 · 15/04/2026 17:22

I use tretinoin, hydroquinone and SPF on the backs of my hands and it’s made a huge difference. The dark spots are completely gone and the skin looks much smoother. I already use all this stuff on my face so I just put some on the backs of my hands each night.

Gettingbysomehow · 16/04/2026 07:24

They are sun spots. I dont have any at 64. I put a high factor sunscreen on my hands when I go out. You can get them lasered off.

1emma19 · 16/04/2026 14:04

It looks like sun-related pigmentation. Daily SPF on the hands makes a bigger difference & it stops it from getting darker. For lightening over time, ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin C, or gentle retinoids can help gradually even things out. That said, it’s always worth getting a quick GP trip just to be sure what it is.

Kepler22B · 16/04/2026 14:32

I seem to be an outlier here. I’m happy with how my hands look. Yes they have changed but I am nearly 50. Is all part of life.

MogsKittens · 16/04/2026 16:51

I’ve often thought I should use SPF on my hands for this reason, but does it not just wash off as soon as you have to wash your hands? (I’m still in the wiping kids bums
stage so do a lot of handwashing!) It always seemed a bit of a pointless exercise!

Branster · 16/04/2026 20:09

During my dog walks, I noticed over the last few years, that some women walking as a form of exercise also wear cotton gloves when the weather is sunny. (Hat and sunglasses as well). It probably pays off in the long run.
The back of my right hand is showing some faint sun spots. Probably from driving.

FruAashild · 16/04/2026 20:18

They are freckles (sounds nicer than liver spots) and if you have fair skin and are gen X then not that surprising since sunscreen wasn't used in the 70s and 80s (at least, my Mum didn't believe in it and I only discovered it when I decided to go interrailing as a student and bought my own skincare). You're not going to have the same hands you had when you were a teenager. So you can either slow the aging now with sunscreen or gloves or accept that your worth does not lie in your physical appearance.

tofumad · 16/04/2026 20:46

Mine are worse, I realise now it is from decades of cycling. Still. I'm well and healthy so can live with it
