This could also work: https://www.johnlewis.com/monsoon-beatrice-flared-midi-dress-pink/p114692291

You might want to ask the bride about colour schemes. It’s a bigger deal not to match the bridesmaids but to co-ordinate with an overall theme. There might not be one, but worth checking before buying.

I was at a wedding in NY last summer. The dress code was much the same as yours. It turned out to be a surprisingly frumpy affair. I made too much of an effort, expecting black tie/cocktail and I felt over dressed. Maybe check if the venue has an Instagram page that might give you an idea of what guests wore to previous weddings.

This would be fun for the evening, maybe with a sparkly wrap: https://www.johnlewis.com/omnes-seychelles-drape-back-dress/magenta/p112835989

But it's polyester. Far too hot for NYC and naff anyway. Polyester is never a choice for glamorous party wear, particularly in a very hot climate.

Well, that depends on your budget.

What is the wedding venue, and what time of day or night?

Long Island in July will be really, really hot and humid. Forget the dress coat and long sleeves.

It's fine to wear black to a dressier wedding in the US, but you should choose an outfit style and colour that is appropriate for the venue and the dress codenon the invitation. A BBQ on a beach would be very different from a sit down meal in an upscale restaurant or resort.

Lightweight polyester is fine in a hot and humid climate as it dries quickly.

Used Designer Wedding Guest Dresses On Sale Up To 90% Off | ThredUp https://share.google/A6bUNRS8g87L3rnzl

ThredUp is a site selling preloved clothing of all sorts. I've bought a few dresses from there for weddings (I live in the US).

You can get an idea of the sort of style that is worn if you browse through.

Some sellers ship abroad. Be aware that UK and US sizes are not the same, if you place an order.

Long Island and NYC in July!

First of all, what a lovely event for you and your teens, I hope you have a lovely time.

Second of all - extremely hot AND humid AND mosquitoes.

You can buy pens that you put on bites - it stops itching, and stops them developing into welts. Most of the big chemist chains sell them.

Your hair! It WILL be humid, so factor that for hair styles.

Anything that is indoors will be bloody freezing - so something for the shoulders!

We went for a wedding to a place called Greenport on Long Island. We had a wonderful time, were charmed by the "Americana' of the pretty towns, white picket fences and everything. The only thing missing was Jessica Fletcher on her bike! 😁

I think the concern about it being hot in July in New York might be a bit overemphasized on this thread. Yes, it will be hot. But we have air conditioning in the US. If the wedding is in July, hopefully the bride and groom have enough sense to have it indoors. But I would definitely check this out. I've only been to two weddings that were held in the summer outdoors. In one (held in Georgia, what in the world were they thinking), the groom fainted, and in the other (held in upstate New York), it was the best man.

Summer in New York is hot, I wouldn’t want a coat or jacket. No hat/ fascinator at American weddings.

have you looked on club London website? That’s my go to for occasions.

Well, maybe, but if it's one of the lovely LI locations, maybe not. The US weddings I've been to in the summer had a lot of group activities - many outdoors, and of course you need to move between venues. And unlike the DC Metro, NYC subway stations are very definitely not air-conditioned!

For Brits who've never been to bits of the US in the summer, it can be a bit of a shock.

I think the heat thing is objective numbers on a thermometer but also the contrast of what you are coming from.

So - living there, you are probably used to it, but those traveling in from a cooler place that is not typically humid?

It kind of floored me. Lovely in the mornings and evenings but mid-day and afternoons? Wow!

I rarely bother looking at Boden any more but they just popped up for me and actually I think some of their occasionwear this summer is lovely.

Silk ruffle dress

Polka dot maxi (very British!)

Do not wear a hat, I turned up as the ONLY hat wearing guest at a wedding stateside, it was decades ago and everyone loved me for it but good grief they just don’t wear them, I have been to three wedding in America, zero hats or fascinators. The last was 2019 there was very much an evening and cocktail dress kind of a vibe going on and it was also a three day wedding.

I wore a cream skirt with a Silk blouse with blue butterflies printed round the edge and blue satin shoes to the rehearsal dinner. A teal evening dress with a kick pleat tail effect and a teal Chinese silk jacket to the main event, it was a mixed Chinese European wedding, with a formal tea ceremony which I took part in as an Auntie, I’m half Chinese. For the post wedding brunch I wore a very nice Brown and cream cotton Calvin Klein summer dress with a little cream jacket.

@GiveMeCoffeeandTV another only person in a hat guest I look back and laugh but at the time and as only a 22 year old it was a bit much. it was a huge cream picture hat that cost a fortune and was very much Four weddings and a funeral type hat. I had a massive hat box on the plane :).

These costumes sound fabulous - especially the first!

3/4 length evening dress would be my choice, on you op it will be almost full length. I’d opt for plain rather than floral, potentially blingy though I’m personally not into shiny dresses. I was the only woman not in evening dress when I went to a us wedding, exh was the only guy in a patterned tie, all the men had plain silk or bow ties
