Another wedding guest one sorry!!

I am part of the grooms family. I will be doing one church reading and will be in a few pictures. I bought this and loved it. But now I am thinking it is too much? I am a size 14, 5'6'' tall, my bum/ bust measurements are equal and my waist is defined. I'm 36

You know far better than me OP what is suitable for an Irish Catholic church wedding, given that I'm neither Irish nor Catholic, so your judgement is best on that! I think the ruffle combined with your J-cup boobs might mean that you look overly top heavy and a bit drowned by the ruffle though

Mary28 · 19/03/2026 13:07

I'm Irish, I go to Church weddings. It's totally fine. It's not the Vatican.

I wouldn't wear an off the shoulder dress for church unless I had a jacket to go over it. But the red is fhe worst aspect imo. I saw some wedding photos recently (winter wedding) where the bridal party all had dark/muted colours apart from the MIL who stood out in all the photos because of her bright red dress.

It really ruined the look of the whole day.

This! I’ve never been to an Irish wedding.

But off the shoulder and that shade of red? No way! I wouldn’t. But if you’re close to the bride? Ask her.

I definitely wouldn’t wear it if you aren’t close enough to ask…

I've never been to an Irish wedding but I'm going to jump in and tell you it's inappropriate despite the significant numbers of posters who are Irish and have been to many Irish church weddings and say it's fine. I'm not only going to share my ignorance I'm going to proudly state it and then carry on anyway.

Yep, amazing the number of posters who haven’t a clue about Irish Church weddings but feel the need to share their opinion on how one should be dressed at them. Culturally unaware Idiots!

OP is asking. And I gave my opinion whilst also clearly stating that this is a personal opinion that is not based on having personally experienced any Irish weddings… So why not?

It’s a public forum and I didn’t present myself as an Irish wedding “expert” in any way shape or form…

mothersdaywoe · 19/03/2026 14:18

It sounds as though I’ve been to more Irish and church weddings than everybody else commenting and if you want to be a laughing stock go for it it’s not suitable.
If they make you stand on the end, you’ll know I was right 😜

mrstambourinewoman · 19/03/2026 14:55

Loving some of these replies. I think it’s completely fine

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 19/03/2026 15:07

I would always suggest something that's comfortable to wear, especially if you've the added pressure of giving a reading. I'm not sure wearing spanx and a dress you're not completely sure about is the way to go.

ahsurelookit · 19/03/2026 15:45

Also enjoying some of the replies. I do think it is 'fine' for a wedding. But I think I can look better so I've kept searching.

I think I'd be more comfortable in this for the day. I think it's the shoulder ruffle putting me off. I bought it on a bit of a whim. I don't think it really suits me

I love the dress but I do prefer the green one you just posted and it will be warmer!

JaneJeffer · 19/03/2026 16:04

The green is very wintery looking

Westfacing · 19/03/2026 16:17

Blimey Op you've gone from one extreme to another!

The original dress suited you and your colouring based on your blurry photos... but I thought it not quite right for the occasion

Now you've gone for a gloomy Phase 8 pleated affair! The model in the photo has your colouring but it looks all very gothic and wintery for a May wedding, and she is 5'10" - it will be down to your ankles

You are being pretty horrible, maybe to make yourself feel better? - I’ve seen your comments on other threads - you need to work on yourself. No one should be stupid enough to take your advice.

NoName47 · 19/03/2026 16:30

I think it's lovely op - definitely fine for Irish wedding and I have been to many!

NoName47 · 19/03/2026 16:33

Just seen you later posts. The red one is lovely on you and would be really nice with some heels. The green dress is not as nice.

mikado1 · 19/03/2026 16:59

Generally, and I did say generally, you wouldn't usually wear something that you'd wear to a lunch or work night to an Irish wedding. It's much dressier. Lots of boutique splurges for many and in general lots of fabulousness. The green one I could wear to work teaching so I think go for the red.. of that's what you like. It's more than ok in terms of suitability as many of us have said repeatedly.
I wore red strapless to my brother's wedding lol, picked out with my Irish sis and Mum so no issue. His MIL wore winter white. I'm sure plenty here woukd have had their pearls popping 😆

ahsurelookit · 19/03/2026 17:09

Ya i know my dress sense is a bit all over the place. I like this too.

I think in the first red one i would be too concious of my stomach all day

I've been living in the UK for too long and realised I've become overly conservative here.

I love the top of this one but not the bottom. I hate an extra frilly bit.

The green is too wintery.

Goditsmemargaret · 19/03/2026 19:17

None of them are the right shape for you OP. Too much flounce. I have a similar figure and colouring. How about a wiggle dress? Size up a little and forget the spanks.
