I’ve fallen in love with a Givenchy dress…

Help me find one that’s as close in style as possible.

Ideally no more than £150 (the Givenchy one is £1500).

It could be black or navy.
It could be mini or midi length.

Thank you!

@stargirl27

I’m quite shocked at the number and type of of opinions too.

I suspect OP is well aware of her body shape and believes she will look good in it, hence searching for a more affordable dress in the same style.

Absolutely right! This would be a flattering dress for me.

Seems there’s a lot of jealousy on this thread from women who wish they could look great in the dress.

Sorry, OP, I don’t have any suggestions but I hope you find something, I’m sure you’ll look amazing!

Thank you for this. Some of the comments are really unkind and don’t seem very feminist or supportive at all.

It's a beautiful dress and I agree with others, those laughing and making negative comments have a hint of jealousy about them!

Thank you. Many comments have been quite eye opening.

The Givenchy dress isn't even particularly revealing !

What's funny about the dresses suggested? Is there a load of awkward 12 year old boys in here or something? 'Sides splitting' with laughter at a dress ... 🙄

These are my thoughts entirely, and I’m finding it quite worrying that people are finding this dress so revealing - most wrap dresses show more boob than this!

OP do you need that dress for something in particular? Is it a dress you would wear frequently in different ways? (I like to justify expensive clothing with a cost per wear). Have you tried it on? If not I would!

I agree with others- cheaper imitations will not match this one. If you really love it what I would do is- find it on every website possible and put a watch on it (net a porter MyTheresa outnet bessette etc) as it may well be significantly reduced at the end of the season or pop up on an outlet site. Set up an alert with Vestiare and and local designer exchange places. If in the UK - local shops and Sellier etc.

in the meantime put aside as much as you can each month, and it may take a long time but you’ll have the money eventually!

I have started investing more in my clothes. I probably would not spend that much on a dress for occasions etc but I would spend a lot on clothes I wear a lot. I’ve really wanted a pair of Margiela Tabi loafers for a long time and have been saving- last week they dropped 60% on Net a Porter so I snapped them up and I love them so much. These are a very marmite item and I’m sure most people here would say I’ve got more money than sense but when I love shoes I will wear them to death so the cost per wear will be pennies eventually,

Edited

That’s a great idea, thank you.

If the dress will suit you, OP, invest in it and also have it altered for an absolutely exact fit if necessary. The structure makes it elegant. It is about the interplay of hard tailoring and soft curves. The cheaper versions are too booby in a boring way because they lack that contrast of sharp frame (dress) and rounded content (figure).

I could imagine Xena Warrior Princess wearing it to a banquet, and that is a sincere compliment.

I would not wear it because I am not the right shape but rock it if you can! Kudos.

This is such a lovely and interesting post to read. Very refreshing.

I hope you find your beautiful dress which will have the vibe of the Givenchy one you posted.

I'm pretty old now and have to rein in what I wear, but beautiful dresses give you memories of when you are young and stunning. For me my memory is of a white dress with a slightly less structured top to yours, then draped down to a split tulip hem. I wore it while at a very classy place in Madeira and felt a million dollars. Weirdly our Area Manager and his wife were staying at the same hotel and when we were back at work he said to me 'oh my wife said your dress must have been very expensive'. It wasn't - it came from a very ordinary little boutique in Yeovil - but it had the right look!

I now have a beautiful daughter and love seeing her looking wonderful when she goes out to special events. I always make sure she sends me pictures of her and her friends and I revel in their youth and beauty. It's a cliche, but it's fleeting and you turn round and it's gone.

Keep searching and let us know when you find it - it will give you something to think about years later. Also I totally admire you for going for something exceptional. My mum told me, don't dress the same as everyone else, be individual - and both me and my daughter certainly follow that! My regret is that I don't have a picture of myself in my dress, so make sure you take some!!!

Best of luck in your search.

This is so beautiful and interesting, thank you for taking the time to write, it has really lifted and encouraged me.

I hope you feel suitably chastened OP for trying to wear something that isn’t a shapeless, ankle-length sack. How dare you.

On a more serious note I second Vinted and hope you manage to find something. The dress is great and could look incredible.

I feel like I need to dress like a Victorian woman now 🤪

Thank you so much to all the posters who responded so positively by sharing images of beautiful dresses, suggesting brands and search criteria etc you have been so helpful.

Thank you of course to all of those who defended and supported the right for women to dress how they want, and stated that the dress isn’t in fact that revealing. I am
genuinely shocked at the sheer amount of negativity and division that was caused by the dress in question.

I’m off to online dress hunt now using your suggestions, and all I can say is that I absolutely cannot wait to buy a dupe dress and wait for the reactions of those around me when I wear it!

Get the dress you want and feel great in OP 👗💃🥻

Bitches always gonna bitch. But when you look good and feel good they just come across as bitter.

Glitterella · 13/03/2026 09:58

OP I am completely with you on how you feel.

I have never been a larger woman but did put on a bit of weight following unsuccessful IVF treatment. The most I weighed was 70kgs which isn’t even that big of a deal for my height (172cm). I have managed to lose the weight and am back down to 63kgs which is where I’ve been most of my adult life except for 4 years on ivf. The absolute shock, horror, misguided concern I have received from women telling me I’m too skinny is horrendous.

It’s like people are only happy when other people are fat. Much like your dress, people are horrified that that might actually look good on someone! It’s a weird reflection of other women’s insecurities I think. Strange.

I've been following this thread with interest. The insecurities go both ways.

I don't like the dress. I've never liked that style of dress. Up until my mid to late 20s, eating normally, no exercise or dieting, I weighed just under 7st or 45 kg. I was your ideal weight and lower for many years.

I never wore that type of dress because tbh, I don't find them interesting. Saying that anyone who doesn't fall over themselves to say it's a fantastic dress is insecure and jealous sounds a bit insecure.

It’s quite simple though, just don’t comment on the dress and how you feel about it. The OPs question wasn’t about that. She never asked for anyone’s opinion on the dress or what it would look like on a human body.

So what prompts a person besides for some sort of insecurity to comment on either their dislike for the dress, the OPs taste in said clothing or how it would look on her body when the OP is clearly asking where to find something similar?

Laiste · 13/03/2026 13:13

No one has said that anyone who isn't falling over themselves to love the dress is insecure.

These comments are triggered by the poster who thought it was appropriate to quote other posters one after the other and be falling over themselves with laughter.

The OP wasnt asking for opinions. Good bad or otherwise. She said she loved the dress and was asking for ideas for something more affordable.

A post with ideas along with a comment on the dress on the side is ok. Posts just saying how much they hate the dress or pretending it's actually hilarious are plain odd and shed light on a certain type of poster. That's what we're discussing.

Laiste · 13/03/2026 13:18

I wonder if that poster would point and laugh at some one else's choices in a queue for the till in a clothes shop? Face to face. Probably not. Might result in a punch on the nose ! 🤣

Not a dupe but a different beautiful LBD from Givenchy for a third of the price?

I don't understand why my reply has been hidden? It had an image of a dress, that was it?
How do I resolve this???
