What to wear?!

Out with the girls on Saturday for dinner and drinks (I have just stopped drinking so already feel anxious about it!) and no longer know what’s fashionable! Am 38, size 8 and used to wearing skinny jeans and nice top. I know skinny jeans aren’t fashionable anymore! So wondering if a top like one of these with some wide leg dark jeans and kitten heel boots would look nice?! If not… help!!

I love the stripe top, I think it will look lovely with wide leg jeans.

Wordless · 04/03/2026 15:58

They do all look (I’m sorry!) a bit … cheap. And more suited to a past era of dressing.

If you scroll through the new stuff on somewhere like

https://www.stories.com/en-gb/newin/

it might shift your perspective to a fresher look. (Or you might just say I’m completely wrong!)

This outfit looks much more now:

Overtheatlantic · 04/03/2026 16:24

This has a similar vibe?

Wordless · 04/03/2026 16:26

Not really …

But perhaps you meant it would be a good choice as it’s a similar shape but a different look?

Helpiscoming · 04/03/2026 16:40

@Babyijustdontgetit
The tops you've shown look really slutty and look like they cost 99p.
Other posters are being more diplomatic but I'm saying what everyone's thinking.
If you must go with a transparent top then go with the white polka dot from Zara with a white vest underneath, worn with wide leg jeans. This will look fresher, younger and more fashionable that what you proposed.
Better still, choose a more sophisticated top altogether.
Drop the skinny jeans - very outdated.
Do not wear kitten heels with wide jeans!! You want flats, pumps, ballets, loafers.

Hmm so scrap everything I said.
If you were out with the girls this Saturday for a nice dinner and drinks, what would you be wearing?!

Wordless · 04/03/2026 17:30

What do you mean, exactly, by the girls?

Assuming your friends are a similar-ish age to you - so close to middle aged - are they lawyers, teachers, opera singers, gardeners, architects, plumbers, portrait painters? Each of those might have a different way of dressing for leisure and fun - and I’m guessing you’d want to look vaguely like the rest of your tribe?

NotAWurstToIt · 04/03/2026 17:30

Perrie Sian does some try ons of outfits from Zara & H&M etc and there might be something there that appeals?

One is a lawyer, one is a SAHM on benefits, one is a SAHM as husband earns ALOT! Other is an artist! Other is a TA. They’re roughly same age as me give or take. All different as you can see 😂 I mean I could ask them but felt a bit silly!!

I'm 37 and when I went out for dinner and drinks recently I wore a plain black mesh top like the ones in your original post, dark coloured wide leg jeans and black Doc Martens.

Got lots of compliments on the top - I had a tank top on underneath rather than just a bra though.

It was winter so maybe you mught want lighter colours now that it's spring, but I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with the tops you picked unless you plan to style them with hot pants and thigh high boots.

P23nb · 04/03/2026 17:39

A waistcoat (worn with just a bra) and trousers are in right now.

BlakeTheBlackBird · 04/03/2026 17:42

The tops you suggested are nice OP.
Most of the other comments on this thread are misogynistic and ridiculous.
Anyone using the word "slutty" to describe women's clothes is not worth listening to

goz · 04/03/2026 17:45

I would be interest to know the age of the posters gasping at the horror of the “slutty” tops.
OP as someone slightly younger than you black jeans high waist wide jeans, a nude mesh bra and nipple covers and the first mesh top would be absolutely appropriate for dinner and drinks with a group of girls.

Some of the alternative recommendations are dubious at best.

Wordless · 04/03/2026 17:48

No - don’t ask them! That would look a bit silly.

Let’s try another tack - what’s your budget, and how do you want to look? (My friends are mostly academics or in creative professions and don’t care nearly as much about clothes as I do, so dressing to see them doesn’t require much thought. I only dress my best for colleagues on whom I want to make a good impression.)

If I were going out with a group of friends and it was worth buying something new for - I’d ideally like things from Acne Studios. (Fabulous design and their things last forever.)

I bet they're older than me. Awful word to use.

I like the asymetric striped top best. If I were wearing it I'd put a strappy, fiited camisole under it. Not getting why there is so much hatred for low kitten heels.

The white waistcoat with nothing underneath is such a cliché and done to death.

I agree with this. The tops you have posted worn with wide leg jeans are the type of thing I see lots of people wearing on nights out (with trainers, not kitten heels). Some of the outfits people have posted are awful, I never see people wearing stuff like I see on MN IRL!

Petesdragoness · 04/03/2026 18:07

Absolute rubbish from other prude commentators about it being cheap and slutty (especially the link to &other stories with office clothing )I'm 35 and wear similar tops, they look nice.

Depends on your style really, I would wear similar to another poster, wide leg jeans and docs or platform shoes but you could definitely go classier like in the attached picture

What to wear?!
halftermhalfawake · 04/03/2026 18:07

ignore the chauvinistic language op- I like those tops but I don't love them, I like the zara link from another pp

whats you normal style/colour preference?

I am more of a dress person but I also love a jumpsuit - don't know if that's a route for you to explore? but thats because I am post partum and the midriff is an issue nightmare so at size 8 it probs is not an area you need to fret about

This is exactly what I was picturing.
I’m quite partial to a long sleeve full body sheer top.
It’s the right amount of skin in a bar in your 30s without dressing like a teenager.
I also agree some of the other suggestions are incredibly corporate.

Thank you! I saw the mesh tops on an influencers page hence thinking they were in right now! I’d not be wearing them with just a bra or my nips out! Doc Martens sound great if I had some. I like the alternative/ kind of grunge look with dark lipstick etc.

I’m relieved! I wear trainers a lot and feel I’d look super under dressed in them! What is an alternative?!
