What to wear?!

Out with the girls on Saturday for dinner and drinks (I have just stopped drinking so already feel anxious about it!) and no longer know what’s fashionable! Am 38, size 8 and used to wearing skinny jeans and nice top. I know skinny jeans aren’t fashionable anymore! So wondering if a top like one of these with some wide leg dark jeans and kitten heel boots would look nice?! If not… help!!

Any sort of chunky/grunge style boots would work. If your look is quite alternative anyway I think this will suit you far more than some of the weird colour combos in the links posted!

I wore plum lipstick and went heavy on the eyeliner, chunky silver jewellery and lots of rings.

Go with something you're naturally drawn to rather than something wildly different that's a passing trend - you'll feel much more confident in something you actually like!

Have a brilliant time :)

I like mesh tops (had one years ago, haven't found one long enough this time round) but the striped one reminds me of Beetlejuice sorry!

Hi! I’m 38 and a size 10 and also feeling a bit rusty at getting dressed for a night out after spending the last few years mainly wearing leggings covered in sticky banana hand prints. Normal parallel universe me loves fashion.

I’m going out with some friends for dinner and cocktails next week. Planning to wear dark denim barrel leg jeans, ballet flats and a thin merino knit. So very similar to your idea, I think!

Aww fab sounds just like my situation haha! I like your style… enjoy!

This is so true! Guess I need to be more confident and embrace being myself! Thank you x

OP, l am very much a “dresses girl” and older, so l don’t think my style would be something for you. I do like the stripey too though. And generally for your style l think lace works better than mesh.

But if l may add a little advice, ignore anyone that uses abhorrent terms like slutty.

Frumpitydoo · 05/03/2026 06:04

Lol at the interrogation and mock confusion over who THE GIRLS are. Can't stand that sort of faux naive pettiness.

The 90s are back and those tops are very 90s. If you have the confidence to wear one, i say go for it and have fun!

Sorry everybody, “stripey too” should read “stripey top”.

Not my personal vibe, but the mesh tops and how you have described styling them are current and youthful (as in fun!)

Thank goodness I wasn’t totally wrong! Spending hundreds on a corporate look for a night out with the girls seemed excessive. Now I just need to purchase the trousers as I already have tops to choose from!

Unfortunately there's a few posters who think they are fashion forward because they suggest spending £900 on ill fitting tarpaulins which cover you chin to toe and are modelled by broken dolls 🙄😅
Have a lovely time OP!

Well as per TikTok this is the fashion for Spring!

can’t believe the capri pants and jelly shoes!! I just remember them giving me massive blisters as a child and the smell!!

so I wasn’t wrong with mesh, maybe slightly classier! I have a suede fringe bag… I just don’t think I can wear the barrel jeans but maybe I can be persuaded!

Why?

@BlakeTheBlackBird
I fully agree, there are a core of posters who suggest the complete opposite to what OP asks for on all S&B threads, OP could say I work in conservative style job need some fresh work outfits and next thing all these outlandish amish tent dresses, ankle socks and platform flip flops are suggested, it’s crazy.
