What to wear?!

Out with the girls on Saturday for dinner and drinks (I have just stopped drinking so already feel anxious about it!) and no longer know what’s fashionable! Am 38, size 8 and used to wearing skinny jeans and nice top. I know skinny jeans aren’t fashionable anymore! So wondering if a top like one of these with some wide leg dark jeans and kitten heel boots would look nice?! If not… help!!

Absolute rubbish from other prude commentators about it being cheap and slutty (especially the link to &other stories with office clothing )I'm 35 and wear similar tops, they look nice.

Depends on your style really, I would wear similar to another poster, wide leg jeans and docs or platform shoes but you could definitely go classier like in the attached picture

This is the look I was going for!!

@Helpiscoming You are a bit outdated! Vogue did a whole article on wide leg jeans with kitten heels. Very normal pairing.

I’d just put a cropped cardi with the jeans or neat fitting wool polo top. Easy to wear and not clubbing gear.

Of course leggings are in if you like them.

If you like the DM style OP but don’t have a pair, H&M have some good chunky Chelsea boots

I also took inspiration from this over Xmas but now it’s March maybe not the pleather?!

I really like that OP. I’m tempted to get a similar top now (although I’m a lot older than you!) 😊

I bet they're older than me. Awful word to use.

I like the asymetric striped top best. If I were wearing it I'd put a strappy, fiited camisole under it. Not getting why there is so much hatred for low kitten heels.

The white waistcoat with nothing underneath is such a cliché and done to death.

Aargh I meant to say I bet they're younger than me. Awful word to use

Wordless · 04/03/2026 17:48

No - don’t ask them! That would look a bit silly.

Let’s try another tack - what’s your budget, and how do you want to look? (My friends are mostly academics or in creative professions and don’t care nearly as much about clothes as I do, so dressing to see them doesn’t require much thought. I only dress my best for colleagues on whom I want to make a good impression.)

If I were going out with a group of friends and it was worth buying something new for - I’d ideally like things from Acne Studios. (Fabulous design and their things last forever.)

Edited

So glad I'm not one of your friends, even one of "a group of friends..worth buying something new for"

Truly awful.

goz · 04/03/2026 19:40

It’s really not silly to text your group of friends and say “hey what’s everyone planning to wear on Saturday?”
Like that’s a completely normal topic of conversation with friends.

I swear so many people on mumsnet don’t seem to exist in the real world.

Love this too! I have that top she's wearing but in green and have worn similar to that too.
march is still cold, can get away with leather too.

Petesdragoness · 04/03/2026 19:52

Also just seen you like the alt grunge look (elder emo here) so if you're anything like me mesh tops are like our uniform 😂

Goldmonkey · 04/03/2026 19:55

Oh my goodness, I really thought I was losing the plot. The links posted (except the polka dot one) look dreadful.

Theres something about the shaping, fit and fabric which just gets it wrong on every level.

The ones you’re looking at are fine (but not with pleather trousers - they always remind me of working men’s clubs).

ForPinkDuck · 04/03/2026 20:00

Ive just bought a mesh top which i wear out im 50. Tbf i have.been called a slut!

ForPinkDuck · 04/03/2026 20:04

Another one older than you who would wear something like you've suggested if I thought it would suit me!
Underwear as outerwear is also coming back into fashion so I read the other day.

Wordless · 04/03/2026 15:58

They do all look (I’m sorry!) a bit … cheap. And more suited to a past era of dressing.

If you scroll through the new stuff on somewhere like

https://www.stories.com/en-gb/newin/

it might shift your perspective to a fresher look. (Or you might just say I’m completely wrong!)

This outfit looks much more now:

The Zara outfit is ghastly and will be outdated soon anyway.

OP - just message your friends ‘hey girls what’s everyone wearing on Saturday night’
You can act like you just want to know what vibe everyone is going for. It’s not silly at all! (I’m 30 and I would wear those tops with wide leg jeans btw so wear whatever you want)

Babyijustdontgetit · 04/03/2026 20:11

Agree, the reality is a simple sheer fitted mesh top is actually something that could have been worn at any time over the last 3 or 4 decades. Hardly dated!

Those over the top barrel trousers scream ‘fashion victim’ desperately scouring the “new in” insert cool clothing store of the moment rather than just wearing something you like, which always, always looks better.
Imagine ridiculing something for looking dated while idealising an outfit with £200 trousers you’ll cringe about in 2 years time.

Vendiagramatic · 04/03/2026 20:27

Hi! I’m 38 and a size 10 and also feeling a bit rusty at getting dressed for a night out after spending the last few years mainly wearing leggings covered in sticky banana hand prints. Normal parallel universe me loves fashion.

I’m going out with some friends for dinner and cocktails next week. Planning to wear dark denim barrel leg jeans, ballet flats and a thin merino knit. So very similar to your idea, I think!

i agree - I quite like a barrel leg, but those look a bit like comedy jodhpurs!

Pooky001 · 04/03/2026 21:12

Jeez what’s with all the cattiness. I think the mesh tops are nice, as are the suggestions from Stories and Zara. I personally am a bit bored of my barrel legs and wide legs so the last couple of times out have worn balloon/bloomer trousers which are sort of cuffed at the ankle, in a silky fabric to make them a bit more dressy. That will give some of you a laugh I’m sure 😆
