Are these two dresses dated for workwear?

I know “if you like it, wear it “ but also I was loved the era of a power Galaxy dress, and would live in them for the rest of my working life, so need some perspective.

I like those dresses. The pink would be somewhat unusual (at least in my work environment, which is fairly conservative tbh) but still appropriate.

I wouldn’t pair them with stilettos or kitten heels, btw.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 22/02/2026 09:27

Look too crimpolene for me and I’d not spend that amount on workwear

gototogo · 22/02/2026 09:32

They are fine though bright, the blue is better for spring onwards

patooties · 22/02/2026 09:34

Harrietsaunt · 22/02/2026 08:17

They are more wedding guest than corporate management to my eye.

However, if you like them, wear them.

Mine too.

StephensLass1977 · 22/02/2026 09:41

Heavily depends on the industry. People at a lot of places I've worked at would stare and make comments behind your back at the bright colours (happened to me), which is very annoying but does happen. Other places wouldn't give you a second glance.

I don't know what is meant by your comment "also I was loved the era of a power Galaxy dress"

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/02/2026 09:43

I dislike both, largely because of the colours. I do think that they look dated, and also they’d need something over them for work and I think it would be difficult to find something that would work.

EscapadeVelocity · 22/02/2026 09:45

Read the links I’ve posted above, @StephensLass1977.

Cyclingmummy1 · 22/02/2026 09:47

I'd wear the pink with a navy cardigan. Blue is a bit twee. Primary teacher.

ElBandito · 22/02/2026 09:48

Just the one?

Don't be silly @squashyhat Loafer on the left foot, trainer on the right foot.

Doggymummar · 22/02/2026 09:49

They Are both awful. Even for Hobbs. Just grim but I guess it depends where you work, does it? No not really there's a reason when things are half price and it's not that the are too stylish

OriginalSkang · 22/02/2026 09:50

I don't like them, I think they're both quite boring

I'm surprised about people's reactions to the colours though! The colours are about the only thing going for them

TinkerTailorLadyThinker · 22/02/2026 09:50

How can anyone answer this if we don't know what your work is?

I think they are both dated and the pink one is definitely not for work, but again, depends what work is!

Growlybear83 · 22/02/2026 09:50

I don’t think the dresses are dated at all, and I think they’re timeless and perfect for work. I love the colours.

PhaedraWas · 22/02/2026 09:53

squashyhat · 22/02/2026 08:46

probably worn with a cardi and a loafer or trainer

Just the one?

They would be fine worn with a cardigan and ballet flats. Trainers would look silly with those dresses.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/02/2026 09:57

Agree - trainers would look ridiculous with them.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/02/2026 09:57

I like them OP, I think the colours are lovely, but then I love seeing some colours in the seas of beige, grey and black. The queries re where you work are valid though, I work for a company in a regional office and wear a lot of jewel tones and slightly gothic attire, no one bats an eyelid as everyone seems to have their own style. When I go into the London office its just a sea of black, grey and beige and I feel like I stand out a lot more!

Melassa · 22/02/2026 09:58

I think they’re fine, nice colours too. Dated no longer exists, unless it’s wacky fashion that was only of its time, otherwise vintage would never sell.

i think these are fairly classic shapes, I have similar in my work wardrobe. As with everything it depends how you wear them. I don’t think they’re wedding guest, but then where I live (not U.K., one of the European fashion capitals) colours are appreciated.

A cardigan is not a good look for work

HugoThatway · 22/02/2026 10:09

Why no sleeves?

Brightlittlecanary · 22/02/2026 10:10

PrimaniTu · 22/02/2026 08:44

They can’t be dated if they’re currently being sold in shops. FWIW I like both of those dresses and perhaps you can set a trend for your colleagues to dress more smartly at work.

A lot of people dress really scruffy these days both at work and out and about.

Of course they can, many dated things are being sold,

A cardigan is not a good look for work

Why ever not?

Ophir · 22/02/2026 10:00

A cardigan is not a good look for work

Don’t be daft. A little black cardigan may not ever be fashion cutting edge, but it would be entirely appropriate in many work places. I don’t think it would help these dresses though.

EatingSleeping · 22/02/2026 10:13

I like them and I would see these where I work in a corporate setting but it's the shoe thing that is throwing me off. Ballet flats don't often look right at work but a heavy loafer would feel jarring. Please do not wear these with trainers it will look like you've put them on for the commute and forgotten to change. I wouldn't buy these because the sleeve cut off is unflattering if you don't have great arms (and I don't) but I think Hobbs dresses are generally well made and suit the workplace

I think people are becoming a bit smarter, it feels like the casual element over corrected in the workplace.

What should you do? Freeze? Put on a huge fair Isle jumper

HugoThatway · 22/02/2026 10:13

Growlybear83 · 22/02/2026 10:11

Why ever not?

If you don't know then is there any point in telling you?Smile
