Are these two dresses dated for workwear?

I know “if you like it, wear it “ but also I was loved the era of a power Galaxy dress, and would live in them for the rest of my working life, so need some perspective.

The pink dress is gorgeous. I'd probably wear this for something more formal than work though.

Not as keen on the blue.

Ophir · 22/02/2026 13:47

All work dress codes specifically state no cardigans to be worn by either sex

Specific exemptions exist for libraries or museums

SanctusInDistress · 22/02/2026 13:47

They are lovely but 100% polyester. For that price not worth it.

No they don’t.

What is your issue with cardigans?

That poster is making a joke.

SwedishEdith · 22/02/2026 13:51

They look like 'panic buy wedding guest outfits' that perfectly serve that purpose but never get worn again. Or 'politician visiting the public somewhere' dresses. Plus, they're polyester so I'd avoid for that reason.

Grin

This is why the removal of the 😂 was a travesty

Is this a specific style or related to its state of repair?

Omg that's just unlocked a memory! When I first worked in city law I worked at a US law firm's London office. We (the trainees) were all flown out to the head office in New York for a sort of induction with all the US first years. Smart casual dress generally - suits required for some meetings. This is late 90s. One of the speakers was a guy who used to be managing partner and had since retired. He must have been 80 odd and so his heyday would have been 1950s I suppose.

Anyway he said that "y'all look like you're ready to work in your gardens" about our smart casual wear. He also had a great anecdote about a grumpy old partner of his day asking him sarcastically if he perhaps needed a loan to buy a suitable hat.

Nothing to add except that a lot of the comments on this thread have made me so glad I work from home!

A cardigan is not a good look for work

But it would dress it down a bit. We don't know if the op works in a school canteen or teaches or digs roads or does something with spreadsheets.....

Floisme · 22/02/2026 14:35

I never had a corporate job and now I'm retired so I'm not going to try and advise but I am agog at this thread. I've not been well and it's proper cheered me up, although it's disconcerting to learn there are posters who don't remember the Galaxy dress.

Also I need a gardening cardigan right now. I never garden and I've no plans to start but they sound right up my street.

DancingNotDrowning · 22/02/2026 12:53

I’m not going to dispute its misogynistic - that doesn’t negate the fact they exist. iircc it was PWC who were taken to court for their lengthy style guide.

i’m amazed how many people have not come across a corporate style guide. I accept in my 40s I might be older than most and I see them less now than earlier in my career but most places I’ve worked have had them.

I have come across dress codes before, of course. I still maintain that a neat black cardigan would be acceptable almost everywhere now.

Sorry you’ve not been well. I had a couple of velvet Galaxy rip offs from Miss Selfridges iirc. One of them was one of my favourite dresses ever.

SwedishEdith · 22/02/2026 14:45

I'd never heard the name 'Galaxy dress' but recognise the cut. I always hated that look - hated the neckline.

ComeOnJeremy · 22/02/2026 14:47

Ha ha my husband is a partner in a City firm and literally wears his gardening clothes to work, often with mud still attached 😭

You forgot art and geography teachers

And the librarians must wear big glasses and have their hair in buns, of course.

EscapadeVelocity · 22/02/2026 14:48

Whenever I buy beautiful new clothes, intended for conferences, meetings with colleagues, tramping through city streets - I assess them for their ultimate purpose, once shabby and unshapely, as gardening clothes. It makes me very happy …

Mithral · 22/02/2026 12:58

Snap! Well I'm more media than tech but I'm GC at a tech driven global media company. You're an outlier as far as I can see (obviously anecdotally). I interact with tech firms all the time and am about to close on buying one and they all seem to dress very casually, include their legal and corporate affairs people.

I'm on the board as well as leading the legal/ risk function and I wear cardigans most days! Usually with a colourful t shirt and some wide trousers. I love a jumpsuit too but also normally have a cardigan over the top of it.

Edited to add - I used to wear a suit to client meetings when I worked in a city law firm but that was literally last century!

Edited

I’m sure it’s a spectrum.

I don’t sit on the board but spend a lot of time with investors. If I showed up to Morgan Stanley TMT in a cardigan I’d be an outlier for sure.

watchingthishtread · 22/02/2026 14:55

I'm struggling to think of what shoes you could put with these dresses that wouldn't look too dressy and old fashioned. Heels and court shoes are very dated and impractical for work. You could end up looking like you're going to a wedding. What shoes did you have in mind?

Aw thank you. It's nothing sinister but extremely annoying. I remember trying lots of knock-off Galaxy dresses but never found one that fitted.

@HugoThatway yes that's the one.

DeathBanana · 22/02/2026 15:19

DancingNotDrowning · 22/02/2026 12:44

Somewhat ironically I suppose I work in a global tech as GC.

My team is definitely more formal than some - our engineers and data scientists for example would have their own dress codes (mostly hoodies and caps!)

I wouldn’t say anyone on my team (which also covers govt affairs, corp communications, compliance and security) is dated but a pink dress would certainly raise eyebrows.

from what you've said here your team is unusual (in terms of what they wear) within your own organisation. Does it not stand to reason then that it’s likely your own office wear preferences are likely atypical and perhaps stridently offering them up to all, is at best, a waste of time?
