Am I missing a great shampoo brand?

I have long, very thick hair and have been using the Garnier Banana stuff or Aussie for years- they are fine but I decided to try some more expensive brands to see if I was missing anything, I bought travel sets with bits and pieces in them, so far:
Philip Kingsley- 7 products, didn’t rate anything, made my hair claggy.
Olaplex- terrible, couldn’t get it out the bottle! Made my hair frizzy and horrible.
Kerstase- the gloss stuff, not bad, made it reasonably manageable but no better than my banana stuff!

Currently eyeing up coco and eve?

Have I missed something great or is it all a big con to part idiots like me from my money?!

I think it's a way of making money from people who think that expensive is better.
I bought some sulphate-free shampoo. It makes my hair dirty.

I’ve tried a few expensive brands and found them hit and miss too. Have you come across Abbey Yung on social media? A bit overwhelming as she recommends a lot of products but a lot them are just your normal brands you find in Boots. I’ve been using some OGX and L’Oréal Elvive shampoos, conditioners and some extra pre/post wash products (definitely don’t do the full method though I don’t have the time or budget for it!) x

mynameiscalypso · 13/02/2026 18:10

I’ve tried lots of fancy shampoos. Nothing suits my hair as much as Head & Shoulders does.

bugalugs45 · 13/02/2026 18:16

I use both Aussie and the garnier banana too, I also like olaplex ( bought huge bottles on a Black Friday deal as wouldn’t pay the crazy prices normally ) and I like OGX biotin , purple bottle . I chop and change all the time.

crazeekat · 13/02/2026 18:16

I was gifted the Moroccan shampoo and conditioner set, and it’s really nice hut for £65 it’s honety
no more good than cheaper sets like bed head, or supermarket stuff.

CraftyNavySeal · 13/02/2026 18:16

Nope. I’ve used Redken, Ouai, Aveda, Paul Mitchell, Herbal Essences, Alberto Balsam, Elvive. It’s all pretty much the same, all I know is don’t bother with the SLS free stuff because it never has enough oomph. I found OGX pants for this reason. I have fine hair but a lot off it and it gets oily.

Elvive gloss is supposed to be similar to Kerastase as they are both L’Oréal and it’s decent

My favourite ever conditioners are Herbal Essences £2 blue one and Argan Oil one from Poundland.

I think the thing that makes the difference is the water, hard vs soft water is like night and day. That and Color Wow dream coat.

I do love Aveda products. I used scalp benefits until they changed the formula

Kamek · 13/02/2026 18:19

Ove used loads of shampoos and have never found better than the TIGI ones

fatphalange · 13/02/2026 18:21

Alberto balsam raspberry or strawberry cream one is by far my favourite, I rate the conditioner highly as well. I spend more on hair masks and treatments. But I haven’t found better than AB for the every day basics.

don3gal · 13/02/2026 18:21

I use Goldwell Rich Repair. The large bottles with the pump dispenser last for ages and I find it well worth the money. I buy off amazon and it’s £40 for both the shampoo and conditioner which I think is great value for the quality and price

Nicecatneighbour · 13/02/2026 18:21

I have thick slightly coarse hair. The best I've tried are L'Oreal Elvive and Tresseme Keratin. Both make it 'silky' and give some shine. I skip wash out conditioner and use heat protection spray. Don't dry it too hot.

WingsTingle · 13/02/2026 18:22

I really like the Head & Shoulders Derma Pro range, though have had decent results with Herbal Essences, too and I love the scents.
For a treat, the Body Shop ranges are lovely ☺️

ForPinkDuck · 13/02/2026 18:23

Follpwing. My hair is a permenent frizz bomb.
Sleeping in a silk bonnet and wearing a hat in the rain helps alot.

geminiflanagan · 13/02/2026 18:23

Kevin murphy stuff is excellent. Well pricey but definitely worth it

I like the shampoo.

Tried absolutely everything for 30 years then my friend brought me back Rose of Bulgaria shampoo and conditioner from her holiday. Never looked back. I restock online. Tried every brand under the sun before that for brittle, dry, damaged hair. This and a coconut oil treatment over night every 3 days (wash hair every other day) has given me best hair ever and that's with taking menopause into account.

Sorry to hijack the thread! I am looking for shampoo and conditioner that would work on hair that is thinning due to peri would this potentially be a good shout for thinning hair?

Yes! I am peri and hair is fine, I find it so nourishing for my hair. Would recommend

AmberSpy · 13/02/2026 18:46

I've tried Coco and Eve. Smells gorgeous but that's about all. Definitely not worth their obscene prices OP!

CDTC · 13/02/2026 18:49

L'Oréal bond repair fixed my hair. I've been bleaching and dying it for 20 years, nothing else has ever worked.

Thank you! Will give it a whirl I think 😊

I have had loads of expensive brands for washing and styling. Only conditioner I have found worth it is kerastase. most of the good styling products that work for me are expensive. I have fine curly hair and the Resistance Kerastase range is perfect - huge difference

Daughn · 13/02/2026 18:57

I have been impressed with Monday shampoo and conditioner

Morepositivemum · 13/02/2026 19:02

I adore the smell of kerastese and reskin and get them with couches every few years but nothing works like Pantene and blue herbal essence and even they aren’t wow. Must be my hair
