Am I missing a great shampoo brand?

I have long, very thick hair and have been using the Garnier Banana stuff or Aussie for years- they are fine but I decided to try some more expensive brands to see if I was missing anything, I bought travel sets with bits and pieces in them, so far:
Philip Kingsley- 7 products, didn’t rate anything, made my hair claggy.
Olaplex- terrible, couldn’t get it out the bottle! Made my hair frizzy and horrible.
Kerstase- the gloss stuff, not bad, made it reasonably manageable but no better than my banana stuff!

Currently eyeing up coco and eve?

Have I missed something great or is it all a big con to part idiots like me from my money?!

I find that the only shampoo that cleans my hair well enough so I don’t have to wash it everyday is Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two.

its expensive, but a huge bottle & I should only have to wash it every 2-3 days.

i buy cheaper conditioner, L’Oréal. That works really well & doesn’t leave my hair on a big knot after showering like lots of others.

Alberto balsam raspberry or strawberry cream one is by far my favourite, I rate the conditioner highly as well. I spend more on hair masks and treatments. But I haven’t found better than AB for the every day basics.

They used to do a lemon shampoo about 20 years ago, it was the best shampoo i have ever used. I wish they would bring it back.

I rotate OGX volume, Aussie miracle moist and Lee Stafford Coco Loco. I really don’t know anymore what is good and bad and have doubts about all shampoos.
I’ve got into after wash treatments recently and currently using Lee Stafford scalp spray, moisture spray on the length and the hair oil on the ends.

Sorry to hijack the thread! I am looking for shampoo and conditioner that would work on hair that is thinning due to peri would this potentially be a good shout for thinning hair?

I started using hair oil treatment when my hair was thinning after having my daughter. I use Nosheen oil, it’s expensive but I only use it once a week or every other week and try to buy when there are others on. I put it on in the morning and wash out evening so it is on my hair for several hours.

Tried absolutely everything for 30 years then my friend brought me back Rose of Bulgaria shampoo and conditioner from her holiday. Never looked back. I restock online. Tried every brand under the sun before that for brittle, dry, damaged hair. This and a coconut oil treatment over night every 3 days (wash hair every other day) has given me best hair ever and that's with taking menopause into account.

Edited

Which one please? I have a friend who lives there and travels back regularly.

I tried the Kitsch shampoo and conditioner bars and I’ve never looked back. It felt strange at first getting used to the bars as opposed to a liquid shampoo/conditioner but now that I’m used to them I would never go back. Had tried loads of expensive brands before these and these are the best. About £10 on Amazon.

BlueMoon23 · 13/02/2026 19:39

I have thick, wavy, frizzy hair. Expensive shampoo and conditioner are a must and make a huge difference. Joico k Pak and wella fusion are my go-tos

Shutuptrevor · 13/02/2026 19:41

Pantene Smooth & Sleek or the lime green Herbal Essences ftw here!

I’ve tried lots of fancy shampoos. Nothing suits my hair as much as Head & Shoulders does.

this! I’ve tried all the natural ones - with H&S I get a glossy light bounce - my hair just loves chemicals 😆

L'Occitane do some nice shampoo.

@Dozymoo42 Rosemary oil is supposed to be good for stopping hair loss. I was losing handfuls due to illness & medication. I started using a L'Occitane one with Rosemary oil. Stopped losing excess within 2 weeks. Regrowth was visible within 2 months.
I now use Olail Rosemary infusion shampoo (Home Bargains, £1.50 for 500ml) and
Faith in Nature Rosemary shampoo (approx £7.99 for 400ml).
I use these 2 & then once a week use Herbal essences Dazzling Shine.
I've never really needed conditioner but all these have a matching conditioner if you want one.

Dinnaeeatallthecheese · 13/02/2026 19:55

Ive used Paul Mitchell, Matrix and now My Organics Hydeating shampoo with the Yoghurt conditioner
I leave the shampoo on, for a few minutes then comb the conditoner through with a wide tooth comb .
Hair is silky
High street brands have undissolvable silicone to smooth but it ruins your hair
Ps,I big bottles from Amazon and refill my smaller ones

Both me and my daughter have extremely long thick hair and all we use on our hair is Neal and Wolf, its the best!

haribonoyoudont · 13/02/2026 20:00

Team thick wavy dry hair here too. Decades of trying everything and my go to's are:

  • Aussie, any 'dry/damaged hair' shampoo and the 3 minute miracle conditioner.
  • Lush Fairly Traded Honey shampoo.
  • Aveda leave-in conditioners are excellent if v pricey
  • Bumble & Bumble Invisible oil range.

Kiehls used to make an incredible argan oil conditioner which was genuinely the best hair product I've ever used, but then discontinued it :(

Iwiicit · 13/02/2026 20:14

This is an interesting thread- there's so much choice of shampoos now it's quite bewildering.
I have menopausal, fine, greying hair ( lucky me).
My teenage daughter told me to try Elvive Glycolic Gloss products and I have to say they have significantly improved my hair to the point that many people have asked me what I've had done to make it look so shiny and lovely!

Oh I might look into that, my hair is terrible 😢 falling out but some weird fuzzy regrowth at the front so my hair looks wild

MrsLizzieDarcy · 13/02/2026 20:41

I often buy shampoo from my hairdressers, I'm using System Professional Balance shampoo at the moment and it's lovely. Helps soothe the scalp and is lovely and rich. Think it was around £18.

StylishAndBeautiful · 13/02/2026 20:47

Hair Care – Avalon Organics - Waitrose and H&B used to sell them.

Vegemitemum · 13/02/2026 20:49

I have long, curly hair and my absolute favourite is Sun Bum revitalising shampoo/conditioner.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 13/02/2026 20:56

I think that some of them are a con, given the eye-watering prices of some products! I have used everything from supermarket home-brands to Alberto Balsam to Redken over the years.

I've tried eco shampoo bars (mostly, it made it drier) and conditioner bars (it made my hair greasy for the first time in its life). In terms of bars, my hair will only accept Garnier... and the argan and camellia oil one makes my hair smell glorious, as well as soft!

Sometimes it's a L'Oreal oil one, but I have a huge stock of Faith in Nature shea and argan oil to get through.

TutTutTutSigh · 13/02/2026 21:00

Another vote for Neal and Wolf. You can buy sachets to test it out before buying, but I get the 950ml big bottles.

Lemonade2011 · 13/02/2026 21:02

Also use system professional by Wella the orange one, I have a sensitive scalp and it’s the only brand that doesn’t affect it and my hair is in really good condition I’ve used it for years and years usually get it online from NOTINO with a discount.

fruitypancake · 13/02/2026 21:28

Try Oi shampoo - first bought in a salon as loved the smell but now buy on Amazon , makes hair feel great

ExcitingRicotta · 13/02/2026 21:37

OGX is sooo good and affordable. It took my hair a couple of weeks to get used to it (I think it was so used to be stripped by SLS) but now it’s great (I think my oils have rebalanced or something maybe?!) and I don’t have to wash my hair nearly as often - gone from every other day to every 3-4 days 🥳

Whatwouldnanado · 13/02/2026 21:40

Currently using up some Treseme which is great, but the best for me is the stuff Holiday Inn provide in their hotels. Makes my fine hair feel super. I understand M&S basics volume stuff is good.

canuckup · 13/02/2026 21:43

Different hair type (grease ball) but I've tried Aveda, Redken, etc and tbh nothing beats Alberto balsam tea tree tingle and Johnson's baby shampoo.
