Am I missing a great shampoo brand?

I have long, very thick hair and have been using the Garnier Banana stuff or Aussie for years- they are fine but I decided to try some more expensive brands to see if I was missing anything, I bought travel sets with bits and pieces in them, so far:
Philip Kingsley- 7 products, didn’t rate anything, made my hair claggy.
Olaplex- terrible, couldn’t get it out the bottle! Made my hair frizzy and horrible.
Kerstase- the gloss stuff, not bad, made it reasonably manageable but no better than my banana stuff!

Currently eyeing up coco and eve?

Have I missed something great or is it all a big con to part idiots like me from my money?!

I have really thick hair and have tried so many shampoos across the whole price range! Nothing helps … except - Davines Love smoothing shampoo and conditioner - my hair is so much smoother with it.

we also added a water softener to our water system which has also helped!

All the beauty editors swear by Loreal hydra something! Purple bottles. I tried it and loved it.
Pureology is fantastic too but more expensive.

Amika. Crazy expensive but worth it, has made a massive difference to my hair. I use the green bottle, bond repair shampoo.

Howmanychanges · 13/02/2026 21:56

It is expensive but Davines OI is the best shampoo I’ve used and smells gorgeous

piscofrisco · 13/02/2026 22:31

I use Kevin Murphy when I’m flush, and Aussie when I’m not!

piscofrisco · 13/02/2026 22:31

kevin Murphy products are spectacular

I have wavy hair and go with the recommendations of a FB group I'm on. They are mainly Garnier, Alberto Balsam and Aldi brands. All dirt cheap - mostly from the pound shop - and make my hair feel lovely!

Davines is the best hands down but very pricey

Another vote for the Monday shampoo (pink oblong pump dispensers, supermarkets)
(The hairdresser also asked what products I had used)

Fab thread! Wonder if anyone could sort my shampoo issues out?!

About a year ago I decided to get the chop and went from mid back to sat on shoulder length hair. Fine hair but lots of it, a bit wavy.

Since I’ve had it cut shorter, I now wear it down most days (used to clip up generally) but it now gets greasy so quickly! I’m guessing probably due to it wafting around more, and probably me messing with it 🙄🤣. Could also be peri as I’m mid 40’s

Anyway, always loved herbal essences, but now wondering if I need a change?! I’ve always washed every 2 days, but day 2 it’s already looking shoddy.

Would be grateful for any tips!

L’Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths

RedRiverShore6 · 14/02/2026 15:18

I get on with different shampoos depending on the water, I use Phillip Kingsley in softer water areas as my usual cheapo Dove which I use at home in our hard water is terrible on holidays and leave my hair lank.

I’m really enjoying Ouai shampoo and conditioner (medium hair shampoo/conditioner although I have quite fine hair), I love it for my hair, have been using it a couple of years but it’s quite spenny. I’ve also used a cheap one recently called Monday haircare moisturising shampoo/conditioner and that also makes my hair look and feel great. This is the one I keep in the bathroom for the whole family and I use it now and again to make my expensive ones last longer!

IwanttoWFH · 14/02/2026 15:38

The banana Garnier made my hair so dry!

I love Coco and Eve. It’s expensive but lasts a long time (I’ve been using for about two months now, double shampooing every time and still have lots left). I am using the pro bond repair as I have dry, colour damaged hair. It’s made my hair so soft, shiny and manageable.

For a budget buy, the L’Oréal hydra in the purple bottle is also very good!

Saxendi · 14/02/2026 15:38

I also love Davines, lovely products, they seem to last well too.

I have very thick, long, coarse hair and the Neal and Wolf daily one has been an absolute lifesaver for me. I use the Monday one for travelling.

Sofachick6 · 15/02/2026 10:52

I was a Kerastase die hard but the Elvive stuff has certainly taken a step up recently. I LOVE that after-conditioner gloss stuff

Hiptothisjive · 15/02/2026 10:56

I have tried most and the one I have settled on and love is Pureology.
