Brands you think of as tacky

Lighthearted! Was chatting to some ladies at a group I attend and they were talking about fashion brands that is seen is tacky and trashy, superdry, Tommy Hilfiger, juicy couture, Adanola etc. do you agree with this? FWIW I do wear hilfiger jeans the odd time but seem to live in adanola as I find it nice fitting for my shape and very comfortable and never thought the brands as tacky per se but now I’m a bit paranoid, not that I care too much but nobody wants to appear tacky let’s be honest

Tresseme advertises itself as "salon quality hair care" when it clearly is nothing like an expensive salon brand.

Baylis and Harding - I'm thinking of their gift sets, which are beautifully packaged to look much more expensive than they are.

Soap and Glory is marketed with an old style functional appeal, like Benefit.

Im all these brands are using marketing to look better than the actual product. I'm sure the products are fine, but they are not the premium products they pretend to be.

I'll add Ferrero Rocher and Lindors to that list!

I don’t know about tacky, but Tresseme is awful. It’s like washing your with washing up liquid.

Tiffany not necessarily the rings etc but the dog tag (I don’t think that’s the right word 😂) stuff.

I am a wild swimmer but mine (regatta version) has made it out a lot in the incessant rain and wind so far this year.

And there's been no opportunity to swim in the wild seas.

I look utterly ridiculous but I am warm and dry so no longer care.

DD has the regatta version, I'm not sure which is tackier out of having a branded dry robe or an alternative? I also don't care because I'm warm and dry. 🤣

Lots of the brands here are mostly worn by teenagers though - White Fox, Pandora, Superdry, Juicy Couture, PLT, Shien etc...

Also when people are talking about Burberry do they mean the check or in general. My incredibly stylish boss wears lots of Burberry and not a check or logo in sight.

I was gutted when they changed everything from the original RI to just another generic shop. It used to play Cab Calloway and had a lovely old jazz feel to the place. Haven’t be in for years but have still never forgiven them!

I had no idea that River Island used to be like that. I can’t imagine it at all.

SleeplessInWherever · 13/02/2026 13:29

I am definitely not a teenager but will buy my holiday clothes from SHEIN etc, because I am unable to wear the clothes I will in Tunisia, in Cheshire.

I don’t see the value in buying expensive clothes that I only wear once a year, so will just buy cheap tat!

Pricelessadvice · 13/02/2026 13:31

I wear an equestrian version of a dry robe (and I paid a ridiculous amount for it!) but it works for me so much better than a normal coat because normal coats make me hot and sweaty. The dry robe is big and baggy so I can muck out and do the yard for a few hours and not be sweating or uncomfortable.

I think they look hideous and I wouldn’t wear one for anything other than the yard or dog walking but they are a god send for a busy equestrian.

Littlejellyuk · 13/02/2026 13:52

McKenzie tracksuits 🤢

Bertiebiscuit · 13/02/2026 14:02

Their clothes are boring "preppy" style knock offs, but expensive, and no connection to Japan, that nonsense is just to try to look cool. I am amazed that any women shop there

Bertiebiscuit · 13/02/2026 14:05

A bit unfair, any woman who swims indoors or out can benefit from these, especially older women and women with mobility feel the cold badly when they leave the pool/sea/river whatever. Purely practical

Bertiebiscuit · 13/02/2026 14:11

I can only assume that people who live in "the middle" of the country have nothing more interesting to talk about than other women's clothing choices

Bertiebiscuit · 13/02/2026 14:17

The "hating" on women who wear dry robes, whether or not they swim outdoors, was started by misogynist old blokes, i don't understand why women have jumped on this unpleasant trend. Same blokes who call older women who aren't doormats "Karens".

I had no idea that River Island used to be like that. I can’t imagine it at all.

When it first came out it was full of character. Wood, ambient lighting, jazz records. Then one day they refurbished it to bright lights, modern music, etc. I never really got over it.

If there's one thing I've got from this thread, it's an overwhelming desire to treat myself to a DryRobe.

Until this thread I had never even heard of them 🫤

Calliopespa · 13/02/2026 14:48

Verv · 13/02/2026 12:00

Why does anybody need to dress in a manner that is "attractive" to anybody else though?

Not wishing to wade in on the DryRobe argument because it's ridiculous, but "attractive" is subjective anyway.
There are "loved by Mumsnet" uniforms that are so tired and trite they make me eject my eyeballs, but others seem to think that they're "the look" so let them get on with it. It doesn't matter what anybody else wears unless you have to shag them.

The vociferous anti-dryrobe crew are using their scorn to elevate themselves above their peers and make themselves look/feel better.
It's a behaviour pattern as old as time, but with an ever changing "victim".
DULL.

well I don't really mind if people wear them or not; they aren't forcing me to see bits of them I'd rather not see. But that was just an answer to the pp who asked why they were ok for some purposes but not otherwise.

And by attractive I wasn't meaning sexy so much as the fact they have a whiff of being a "cover all" in a way that gives a hint of not having changed out of pyjamas, showered etc. In reality they have probably spent ages perfecting their dry robe nonchalance - accessorised by a coffee to give the full I only just made it out of bed look !

Superdry. Their Japanese slogan, Kyokudo kansō (shinasai)極度乾燥(しなさい), on their products is grammatically awkward and unnatural. A native Japanese speaker wouldn’t use a phrase like this as a slogan. It sounds like a bunch of random words strung together rather than a coherent expression.

See, I remember Superdry before they became Superdry and were a company called Cult Clothing based in Cheltenham. I much preferred Cult lol

Oh I completely agree!! I bought DH a gorgeous leather barn coat there in the early 90s and it lasted about 15 years. Now it's complete tat.

wishingonastar101 · 13/02/2026 15:26

I am going to add AllSaints... I used to love AllSaints but now it's all diamonte and random slogans!

Dabralor · 13/02/2026 16:24
  1. Holland Cooper - too much gold
  2. Fairfax and Favour - my neighbour buys stuff from here and then flashes pics of the carrier bags all over Facebook to show off how rich she is, the very definition of tacky!

sorry everyone

I used to buy things off Julian's Cheltenham market stall in the early/mid 80s, lots of vintage and gothy stuff. My Echo and the Bunnyman style big tweed coat was a particular fave.

SquashPenguin · 13/02/2026 17:52

Anything they sell in Flannels and usually TK Maxx. DKNY anyone?!

White Fox is tacky, it’s bloody everywhere. Juicy Couture is naff.

NowWhatUsernameShallIHave · 13/02/2026 17:56

Any bag with LV all over it - in fact any item with a monogrammed logo all over it.

Tops with the very large Ralph Lauren logo on it

Bag charms especially huge fluffy ones

obvious bronzer or self tan that is too dark or orange

TattyG · 13/02/2026 17:59

Burberry is Chav central along with most Gucci stuff now 🤮

I do love Fairfax and Favour though so will take that on the chin 😂

LeatherJacketWedding · 13/02/2026 18:00

Anything that teenagers become obsessed with. They ruin everything! 😭

Julia001 · 13/02/2026 18:00

I resemble that remark 🤣 I have two, no fucks given here 🤣
