Just that. I can feel them but I can't see them, even with my glasses, a magnifying mirror and all the lights on 🙄I usually just get the razor out and give my chin a once over but I don't think that is the best solution...
Any tips?

It’s very comforting to read of others’ similar struggles! I’ve just bought a lumea as the sheer volume of dark hairs feels like it’s got way beyond my plucking ability and failing eyesight. The white hairs might elude it, but I’ve got enough darker ones to keep it busy!

It says you’re meant to remove all hair before using it, but I’ve not been able to contemplate shaving or doing anything to the currently acceptable hairs, as I’m frightened of over-exciting them and going full Desperate Dan. Has anyone used the lumea on a haired chin and had success?

You really do need to shave first with the Lumea I’m afraid. It’s good - I’ve used it on my legs.

weaselyeyes · 31/01/2026 22:33

Gah to the shaving, but thank you!

I think I’ll give it a few goes without shaving, in the hope it picks up all the ones regenerating after plucking. But then if that doesn’t work I’ll have to be brave. I’ve always had this conviction that if I have to shave my face it will somehow be The End, although I’m not sure why I think it will be worse than the current myopic tweezer apocalypse.

I mascara mine so I can see them, then tweeze.

I can’t decide if I’m a total genius or batshit mental.

Genius

Electrolysis doesn’t remove them permanently I used to get that before Covid and had to go every month. Currently flawless finish but need to do it every day. I’ve booked in for laser on my chin. Has anyone any experience of it?

I had 4 or 5 sessions of laser on my legs about 25 years ago and a couple of sessions on my underarms. In both cases I’d paid for courses of 6 sessions but the beauty salon bit of Boots closed down partway through. I was refunded for the sessions I’d not had, but that wasn’t the point. Fortunately they didn’t ask for the Advantage points back.

In those days laser could only be done by a qualified nurse, supervised by a doctor - but I don’t know what form that supervision took.

My legs have been marvellous. There were initially a few hairs left but for years I’ve had completely smooth legs. Underarms are definitely more sparse but the hair is not all gone. What effect being postmenopausal has had I don’t know: the hair on my head is thinner.

I didn’t have laser on my face because at that stage the electrolysis had dealt with it all.

I vaguely remember having to shave a couple of days before laser sessions, to give time for the hair to regrow a few mm. If you shaved just before the treatment , why would it matter if you had dark or light hair?

When I had electrolysis I used to have it done after school on Friday and stayed at home for the weekend to let the redness die down. I do react quite badly to some things on my skin, though. I have minimal scarring now.

It really won’t! If you don’t want to use a razor get one of those Flawless battery operated mini facial shavers. Or Braun does a good one. You just whizz it over your chin before doing the IPL, and if any stubble comes before the next IPL season just whizz it over again. Each time there will be less regrowth.

if you keep plucking the IPL won’t work - it needs to travel down the hair under the skin to reach the root.

This is so good. Everyone who reads this thread will remember this for the rest of their life. You are a legend.

Laser hair removal quick and painless if you have more than just one chin hair.

I've had my lumea for 6 years and most certainly did not shave my face! I waxed previously so just waited until the hair was starting to grow through. Means it's a bit more ouchy and you get the smell of singed hair if you have a particularly thick one, but otherwise worked fine.

I did two rounds of the regular followed by a year of maintenance. Now I just whip it out if I spot any hairs regrowing, which tends to only be 1-2 a year.

The white buggers still survive but there's only a couple of those.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 01/02/2026 00:16

Do them before you put your contact lenses in/glasses on, with your phone torch underneath your face. So easy then

Or on a sunny day in the car mirror.

TheSlimmingFoodie · 01/02/2026 00:28

I bought a Philips Lumea several years ago. Although expensive it’s one of the best things I ever spent money on! Prior to that I’d used every hair removal method known to man.

Over the years I used the Lumea on various parts of my body:- armpits, legs, fingers and toes (I know, I know!) and of course face - upper lip, chin, eyebrows.

I was an ideal candidate in the beginning, pale skin and dark hair. I’m not recommending that anyone else does this but I did break the rules, using it for longer and more frequently than Philips instructions, and zapping eyebrows (although carefully positioned and always with protective eyewear and eyes tight shut!) The results have been great.

It takes time to clear the hair completely, several months of daily use, although you do become very quick with practice and of course the hairs become less and weaker the more they’re treated. Some areas need to be redone several times before the hair is killed off completely.

New hairs do appear on the face over time, probably due to the menopause, but only a few, and nothing like the dense and vigorous original growth. Sadly mine are now mostly white so ipl is no longer effective. Other parts of the body have remained hair free. It takes longer to achieve this than with a powerful laser in a salon or clinic, but is so much cheaper and convenient to slot into daily life.

If you have the right complexion and sufficient funds I thoroughly recommend this method.

I have a mix of white and black shin and mustache hairs that seem to rapidly grow overnight. What brand epilator did people use or recommend?

With electrolysis done properly (no sensation of the hairs being plucked), they would never, ever return. My old electrologist (RIP) had the opportunity be one of the first practitioners of laser hair removal in the UK, but thought it was a scam as the hairs may return and chose not to offer laser.

I had my chin and other unwanted hairs removed by electrolysis and it has worked. But I traveled over an hour to visit a good one.

Laser treatment worked for me. Electrolysis by about five different operators over more than five years was never very effective. It never lasted more than a week. Laser treatment lasted years. Some areas are still clear after about fifteen years.

Give your husband a set of tweezers,my husband does my fluffy area as the menopause has given me a big gut and I can't see that either 👍🤣🤣🤣

HopeFor2026 · 01/02/2026 08:09

I shave once every couple of weeks as my chin is riddled, pluck the ones in between.
For me this has been the most effective tactic, my tache is silky smooth 😂 but my hair grows back very fine. You do get some stubble but as I get so many it's the easiest solution.

ShodAndShadySenators · 01/02/2026 08:20

For the white facial hairs, which are now breeding like rabbits, I just slowly stroke the skin from the side with a fingertip and when they pop back up I can see them glinting. I favour the bathroom window for this as I like the east light, but I do tend to travel around the house, tweezers in hand, using different windows because some hairs you just can't see without some sun. I have had a hairy mole since my mid-teens (that was fun) and now the hairs in it are gradually morphing into white ones, plus the mole has practically disappeared, leaving a campsite of bristly hairs instead.

I have the Braun face thing for the moustache with random plucking sessions, after 40 years it no longer hurts to pluck, even nostril hair (which always reminds me of Lord Percy)

Nofksleft2give · 01/02/2026 08:44

The mascara idea is great. I also find brushing a good amount of loose face powder over the offending area highlights the ones to target in a magnifying mirror. It also helps wax strips grip if I’m using those.

Blueuggboots · 01/02/2026 09:19

I’ve got a 10x magnification mirror attached to my LED light up mirror. You can’t miss them!!

Hotchocolate4 · 01/02/2026 09:32

I get wax strips, cut them into smaller pieces and just wax mine. Makes it so much easier and growth back is slower

Get your mascara brush and rub it over the area. I do this for my eyebrows.

CatsMiaow · 01/02/2026 13:19

Mine also sit visibly under the skin so waxing and epilating is no good as it doesn’t catch them. Sometimes I have to squeeze them out or scratch them out with the tweezers before I can pluck

I have never shaved it and Lumea'd it. I had a friend who did IPL professionally and she said no need to shave it and it still works.
It's always worked amazingly on my dark hair.

greencheetah · 01/02/2026 13:52

This might sound counterintuitive but I can see mine much better if I take my glasses off.

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/02/2026 19:29

Superdrug do a 15x magnifiying mirror for a few quid. Sit in daylight (in your house!!) but not bright sunlight, very bright sunlight blurs out all the ghastly details.
