How to get rid of chin hairs when your eye sight is not so great (thanks menopause!))

Just that. I can feel them but I can't see them, even with my glasses, a magnifying mirror and all the lights on 🙄I usually just get the razor out and give my chin a once over but I don't think that is the best solution...
Any tips?

I suppose this is what failing eye sight at menopause age is for. So we can't see the horror of the chin hairs and neither can any of our friends as their eye sight is rubbish too.

Has anyone ever tried Vaniqa? It's supposed to stop it growing

Edited

The GP gave me this many years ago but it made my skin bleed.

Mathsdebator · 31/01/2026 18:39

I use a magnifying mirror and hold my phone torch underneath. Terrifying

I mascara mine so I can see them, then tweeze.

I can’t decide if I’m a total genius or batshit mental.

This is pretty much the best idea I’ve ever read on mumsnet. @mumsnetplease could @TinDogTavernget some sort of award?

Ouch that sounds painful! Is that a common side effect?

I read that some of the side effects could be acne and burning

Just use an epilator, you don't have to see well to use it. I run mine over my face a couple of times a week, then run my hands over to see if I can feel anything. Been doing that for years. You can tell by touch if any have survived the first run.

when I used an epilator I had angry red bumps as they grew back :-(

Frillysweetpea · 31/01/2026 18:46

What are car tweezers??

It thins the skin down so yes I think bleeding is common side effect, it was many years ago now but Ive never forgot it, I had high hopes for it.

Very few places seem to do it these days. Laser treatment was much more effective but now the hairs are returning with the menopause and going white. Nowhere anywhere near me seems to do electrolysis .

With electrolysis done properly (no sensation of the hairs being plucked), they would never, ever return. My old electrologist (RIP) had the opportunity be one of the first practitioners of laser hair removal in the UK, but thought it was a scam as the hairs may return and chose not to offer laser.

I had my chin and other unwanted hairs removed by electrolysis and it has worked. But I traveled over an hour to visit a good one.

She has one.

I just work the tweezers along opening and closing and hope they grab something!

This is what I do, hoping for the best 😂

How do you find a good one though? I heard it was very painful

i have mine threaded off by my beautician.

Same. In-between appointments I feel around while I watch tv or wait for the traffic lights to change. Eventually the Stars align and you get the prickly bastard between your thumb and pointer finger nails and out it comes.

Any tips?

I get my daughter to do it. She looks forward to it.

Cowboysnangels · 31/01/2026 18:54

i use a magnifying mirror and stand over my bedside lamp. The angle of the light is perfect for catching the little fuckers.

NCDoris · 31/01/2026 18:57

Just to say if you see a lone woman in Sainsbury's car park do not park right next to her , she may be plucking her chin hair!

JuniperKeats · 31/01/2026 18:59

Magnifying mirror

WinterBlues26 · 31/01/2026 18:21

You can buy them x20???? 😱 Where did you get it from? Mine is x10 and I still can't see the bristly buggers.

Edited

Amazon. x20 is essential when the hairs are totally white.........

Bonkers1966 · 31/01/2026 19:04

I have a magnifying mirror with suckers that I attach to a window for full light. Works a treat.

TheFormidableMrsC · 31/01/2026 19:05

Buy a x10 magnifying mirror and be prepared to discover you have a full beard.

Alltheyellowbirds · 31/01/2026 19:08

My chin hairs are multiplying with every year of menopause, ditto the tache. After a lot of trial and error my holy grail products are:

  • Simplehuman light-up magnifying mirror (vastly expensive but bought with points)
  • Braun facial epilator.
  • Braun or Flawless facial electric razor thingie.
  • Tweezerman tweezers.
RonnSeall · 31/01/2026 19:10

I also have a Simplehuman mirror and it’s amazing- although it’s horrific when you see your face that magnified!

PatchouliPrincess · 31/01/2026 18:50

It was trial and error unfortunately after my original electrologist passed away.

I went through a lot of pluckers. The thing my two good ones have in common is that they have been practicing for over 20 years. Apparently modern training isn’t as good.

I found all mine by the association site: https://www.electrolysis.co.uk/members

ETA as for pain, I find thermolysis (cauterising the hair with electric heat) more bearable than electrolysis (killing the hair with electrocution). Also one pulse multiple times is more bearable than multiple pulses, one time. But everyone is different.

Also in my experience the chin didn’t hurt that much compared to other body parts. The most painful part for me was the lower belly and navel.

NutButterOnToast · 31/01/2026 19:22

Face waxed once a month for the fine hairs
Philips Lumea
Tweezers for the stubbly chin bristles

Barely keeping up tbh! I'm constantly stroking my chin to feel for new horrors poking up

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 31/01/2026 19:23

Pleased to hear this is a common problem!
