De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

I really want to blow a large part of my kitchen budget on a fancy tap that does boiling water AND sparkling water.

Have you even considered the Health and Safety aspect of having such a gadget in your kitchen? You'll have stone cold brews and burn your mouth with hot water when you should have had a cooling glass of sparkling water.
Your kids ( if you have them ) won't have a clue what's what and you'll be down to A & E with them within a week because volunteered to wash up wanted to fiddle with a new toy!!

Ok please don’t hate me - it’s hideously expensive but I love this necklace so much, please talk me down!

Honestly, this looks like some creepy cursed necklace from a horror film like " The Ring" which dooms the wearer to a horrible death.

Please talk me out of the stupid Roka lucky dip. I don’t need any more bags, I really don’t.

Roka bags say ‘Bought in the garden centre sale’ to me.

I googled. It looks a bit like you're dating a lumberjack, had a toilet accident at his house and put his shirt on backwards as a skirt to cover your shame.

It's also very clueless inspired which is almost over (sadly) as a trend and then you'll look like supergran (if you are unaware then Google image search and the skirt won't tempt you any longer)

It's dry clean only so a massive hassle and looks like it'll bobble to buggery if it goes near a washing machine.

Helpful?

😂😂😂

They're all much of a muchness though

You could get acrylics done for the same price as that nail polish. And they'd last longer!

interested what pp are saying about Magnesium, I'd been thinking about buying it to help me sleep, but sounds like it's not that great?

I posed the question. Sounds like eating a couple of Brazil nuts a day is a better shout.

DH did immediately ask if that meant we would have sparkling hot coffee…

OP this thread is brilliant and could have saved me thousands if I'd thought of it before!
But LED face masks like Shark etc, do I need one? I'm early 40s and hear good reviews, but I could probably put the money to better use if I wanted to be sensible.

I haven't tried the shark LED mask but I'm pleased with my Boots LED mask which is a bargain at £50. A price difference of £250!

I like the look of Unfolded dresses, they claim to be more environmental by only having items made once ordered so less waste although this adds to delivery times. There is one dress I was looking at but the reviews are not brilliant, referring to poor quality fabric and not true to size. There are of course loads of very positive reviews!

I wonder if anyone has actually ordered something from them, I particularly like the Camilla dress but they are quite pricy for my budget so would want them to be decent quality.

If you have bought something, are they true to size or do I need to buy a bigger size? I think I’d need a size 22, I’ve lost weight recently but have not yet bought new clothes!

I ordered a pinafore dress for my mum on 5th November...for Christmas.
It arrived today. I know it's slow fashion but the shine of the purchase has definitely gone.

This M&S jacket. All the photos of models are of them in gym wear and I don't do that so why does it appeal to me so much?

No more than 1-2 brazil nuts a day. Too much selenium is not good for you 😬

It doesn't have a hood and it's not going to stop raining until summer.

Oh yes, them too. Throw them all on the bonfire.

There is a wall of Roka bags as I enter my local garden centre / tatt emporium.

Look for a Cos quilted jacket on Vinted instead.

Sasha07 · 28/01/2026 23:35

@Snugglemonkey have you tried a weighted sleep mask? I love mine (also find it hard to a) get to sleep and b) get any decent sleep) but with this, it helps me to sleep much better. I wear it like a headband over my forehead while winding down and I think I've helped to train myself to feel tired once I feel that pressure on my head 🤣 then slide it down over my eyes once I'm feeling like I could sleep.
I found out about them by accident. I used to have bad insomnia, then one day I went to yoga. The lady gave us all a mask and we lied down for a little while after the session. Every class, as soon as I got the weighted eye mask on, I'd fall asleep there and then 🙈 better than Nytol/Kalms etc.

Carandache18 · 28/01/2026 23:38

This thread is a brilliant idea. Please someone tell me why I don't need Guerlain L'Heure Bleu.
The Vivienne Westwood skirt is just too bunchy. A darker tartan might have worked better.
(Can't think of anything negative to say about the blue linen top!)

I would really love to buy this Dior nail varnish (sorry for the long link, I don't know how you make them shorter!)

I only wear clear or tinted varnish, I tried it in the shop and it looked only the tiniest bit different to the one I was already wearing (maybe even too pink), I would never consider paying that much for a nail varnish except I've been suckered into people telling me how great it is.

I keep thinking it will be like the Dior Glow lip oil which is just better and more luxurious than any other lip oil I've used.

Someone please talk me down, I'm trying to pay off my debt for goodness sake I don't NEED it!

Edited

I have it - it looks almost indistinguishable from clear varnish, and comes off quicker.

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

The Zooki silver sachets? I saw these on offer in Sainsbury’s recently and I don’t get on with tablets so got a few to have a go.

Have to say they were excellent and I had some great sleep. 😬 are we allowed to say that in here?

If you do want to be put off - they taste like shit and have a strange texture? Hard to describe. Doable mixed with squash or fruit juice. But not that pleasant as a culinary experience.

The bottom oven on my double oven has just died. I feel I need an expensive pyrolytic oven to replace it. Please tell my why not.

Purdy and Bastard Fig. All over my instagram and I’m being sucked in.

Someone please tell me it’s just the Emperor’s New Clothes of cleaning products and I don’t need a subscription to something as miserable and dull as cleaning products.

They come in a pretty box….

It's plated brass, if you wear it when you are at all sweaty/have oily skin or get perfume on it it will tarnish and you will have paid £990 for a green neck and a faint whiff of plumbing supplies. And possibly hives.

How old are you?

If you're anywhere near peri menopausal you'll be wanting to rip that off yourself as your neck heats up all the time!

The box isn't that pretty.

I got some, sucked in, as far as I can tell it does nothing, smells nice (some of them, some don't) for about ten seconds.

I prefer Elbow Grease, think it's £1, and it actually works.
