De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Yes exactly! If the kitty is fitting in well with the rest of the family I'm not sure there's any way to de-influence that.
I was talked down from an all singing, all dancing top brand robovac to a mid-range £200 robo vac, mop and empty and definitely recommend it if that's any help. But maybe not very de-influential 😵‍💫

That white band across the hem will draw attention to your middle and cut you in two. Notice that in most of her pictures Claudia Winkleman wears the white hem tucked up inside so it’s not visible.

In the model it looks like a shaped (curved) hem but I can’t tell if it is or not.

I have a provisional diagnosis of ADHD and when my brain gets into a 'busy' mode, I can end up buying things I don't really need or want. A counsellor suggested running these sort of purchases by my adult DD first and that works a treat! She asks lots of questions about why I want it and eventually dissuades me.

Another thing I do is put things into the online cart, leave them there for a while and then go back to them. By then, I realise that I don't really need them at all!

Those flipping backpacks look like something that would have been bought my mum when I was a teenager, and I’d have cried with shame wearing it to school.

Def not worth the money. It’s fine but my hair looks better if I blow dry and straighten it. The blow dry brush attachment I do like but someone tested it against a separate hairdryer and brush and Dyson was slower. Also it takes up loads of size and has various attachments you will stop using after a few weeks.

No. It is no return and it would be v v easy for the length not to sit right.

But LED face masks like Shark etc, do I need one? I'm early 40s and hear good reviews, but I could probably put the money to better use if I wanted to be sensible.

Cats are a million times better than fillers or robot vacuums.

Are you looking to be completely dissuaded or just want it cheaper?

I really want to blow a large part of my kitchen budget on a fancy tap that does boiling water AND sparkling water.

I would fall asleep immediately on seeing someone wearing that. Even a model can’t make it look interesting. It’s so shapeless. And I LOVE a green jumper.

The figure charm reminds me of a voodoo doll and the thick gold plated chain looks cheap. Sorry I feel a bit mean saying this!

You could get acrylics done for the same price as that nail polish. And they'd last longer!

That is beautiful, but the white bits will probably never look quite right again after you wash it for the first time.
