De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

I used to be obsessed with magnesium and took it and had a spray. Then I read the spray doesn’t get absorbed. Years later I had a blood test and my magnesium was high anyway. So it was all a RUSE.

🤣🤣🤣

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

Sorry have read all the posts yet so this may have been shared already.
Try this, you only pay postage. I ordered some and glad I did as they made no difference, so saved me forking our for a month's supply.

@scoobydeedoo Good grief £29 for a nail varnish! There's plenty out there that cost a lot less.

Hi. Please Please talk me out of buying this gorgeous jumper! I have 30 jumpers and cc debt....but it's so lovely 😍

It looks like a big poo.

I want a Dyson airwrap! Tell me it’s a waste of money, and it isn’t as good as everyone makes out!!

Oh that is a good one! I need put off that too!

PoisedGoldBiscuit · 28/01/2026 23:03

FlyHighLikeABird · 28/01/2026 22:29

So, out of the three things, the only essential one is the one-eyed cat. Sorry!

Yes exactly! If the kitty is fitting in well with the rest of the family I'm not sure there's any way to de-influence that.
I was talked down from an all singing, all dancing top brand robovac to a mid-range £200 robo vac, mop and empty and definitely recommend it if that's any help. But maybe not very de-influential 😵‍💫

That white band across the hem will draw attention to your middle and cut you in two. Notice that in most of her pictures Claudia Winkleman wears the white hem tucked up inside so it’s not visible.

In the model it looks like a shaped (curved) hem but I can’t tell if it is or not.

Eat more dark chocolate covered brazils. Both are high in magnesium and much nicer.

I hate dark chocolate, but maybe brazil nuts are a good shout, thanks!

Try very cheap magnesium first, there are several types. I took one and had the most horrible nightmares I'd had in years, never dared take any more!

Magnesium glycenate, and yep, same thing happened to me, freakishly bad nightmares!

BooneyBeautiful · 28/01/2026 23:07

I have a provisional diagnosis of ADHD and when my brain gets into a 'busy' mode, I can end up buying things I don't really need or want. A counsellor suggested running these sort of purchases by my adult DD first and that works a treat! She asks lots of questions about why I want it and eventually dissuades me.

Another thing I do is put things into the online cart, leave them there for a while and then go back to them. By then, I realise that I don't really need them at all!

I would really love to buy this Dior nail varnish (sorry for the long link, I don't know how you make them shorter!)

I only wear clear or tinted varnish, I tried it in the shop and it looked only the tiniest bit different to the one I was already wearing (maybe even too pink), I would never consider paying that much for a nail varnish except I've been suckered into people telling me how great it is.

I keep thinking it will be like the Dior Glow lip oil which is just better and more luxurious than any other lip oil I've used.

Someone please talk me down, I'm trying to pay off my debt for goodness sake I don't NEED it!

Please talk me out of the stupid Roka lucky dip. I don’t need any more bags, I really don’t.

Those flipping backpacks look like something that would have been bought my mum when I was a teenager, and I’d have cried with shame wearing it to school.

What are actual adults doing being so desperate for them that they’ll pay for the shite the company is desperate to get rid of?

Buffypaws · 28/01/2026 23:08

Snugglemonkey · 28/01/2026 23:02

Def not worth the money. It’s fine but my hair looks better if I blow dry and straighten it. The blow dry brush attachment I do like but someone tested it against a separate hairdryer and brush and Dyson was slower. Also it takes up loads of size and has various attachments you will stop using after a few weeks.

Snugglemonkey · 28/01/2026 23:08

YourFairCyanReader · 28/01/2026 22:55

Look at the reviews:

Disappointed
Very disappointing product. Please see other reviews that mention the quality of the polish, they are correct! Colour is great but the polish chips/peels on the same day! For £30 I expect at least a few days wear. I very much regret this purchase.

Yes please! My assistant talked me out of a £700 robot vacuum… I still need talking out of fillers next month and not exactly a purchase but I quite want to adopt my one eyed foster cat 🐱 but I do have two already…

As a cat lover - the one eyed foster cat is perfectly acceptable 🐈Your assistant has already done an excellent talking you out of the robot vacuum. As for the fillers - don't go there. Two of the girls in one of my friendship circles have both been to Turkey together on holiday - it is obvious that they now have rigid faces.

PoisedGoldBiscuit · 28/01/2026 23:11

OP this thread is brilliant and could have saved me thousands if I'd thought of it before!
But LED face masks like Shark etc, do I need one? I'm early 40s and hear good reviews, but I could probably put the money to better use if I wanted to be sensible.

Cats are a million times better than fillers or robot vacuums.

Please help me out!
https://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/product/vivienne-westwood-tartan-side-panther-cotton-mini-skirtR04561980/#colour=MULTI

I am desperately in love with this skirt! I have so many tops it would go with, cardigans and I love the fabric.

I've been trying to deinfluence myself - I'm trying to lose the last bit of baby weight (what size would I buy?) and also I don't know when I would wear it. But I NEED it!

Edit to add - I can justify it because I haven't brought any new clothes for almost 2 years, and I know I would it would be loved and looked after for years

Edited

Are you looking to be completely dissuaded or just want it cheaper?

Because there are quite a few previously owned versions knocking about

Pusstachio · 28/01/2026 23:13

I really want to blow a large part of my kitchen budget on a fancy tap that does boiling water AND sparkling water.

I would fall asleep immediately on seeing someone wearing that. Even a model can’t make it look interesting. It’s so shapeless. And I LOVE a green jumper.

Ok please don’t hate me - it’s hideously expensive but I love this necklace so much, please talk me down!
https://uk.burberry.com/charm-necklace-p81169051

The figure charm reminds me of a voodoo doll and the thick gold plated chain looks cheap. Sorry I feel a bit mean saying this!

Appalonia · 28/01/2026 23:19

You could get acrylics done for the same price as that nail polish. And they'd last longer!

interested what pp are saying about Magnesium, I'd been thinking about buying it to help me sleep, but sounds like it's not that great?

That is beautiful, but the white bits will probably never look quite right again after you wash it for the first time.
