De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Ok. If it works for you, that's excellent. Personal choice. I don't want to derail the thread!

Fair enough - back on the rails we go.

Numoya Go Brush Pro. Yes or No?

I don't think you've had an answer on this yet. @Isthisbatshitcrazyorthebestmoveiwillevermake
The reviews online look very mixed and seems to only be potentially suitable for very fine hair. Plus if you want to return it you have to ship it to China. But please feel free to post it again on the new thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5484883-thread-2-de-influencing-thread-reasons-not-to-buy-things

I've never heard of the Numoya brush. Sometimes it's worthwhile checking out places like Boots, because they have loads of those hairdryer brushes at reasonable prices. Plus, you can always take it back if it's not right.

Fake anything is also really bad Feng Shui if you are into that kind of thinking. If you have plants, propagate something you habe and put that in your kitchen. A lively green thing will look better.

I'm holding onto this and not @Changedname9999 's positive response 🤣 Do they get greasy?! That's the question!

Moulez · 02/02/2026 11:59

You could just put your question into AI and it will tell you, by combing through all the reviews online

I need convincing not to buy these artificial flowers and vase for my kitchen. Like this one linked, but I'd get individual stems and put it together myself, and would probably get a different vase, but you get the gist. Artificial flowers normally look really fake, but these reviews make them seem like they would look almost real. Help please!

OMG no!!! why would you buy something that will gather dust, grease & discolour meaning you have to bin it where it will continue to exist in landfill for hundreds of years destroying nature & the very thing you are trying to replicate in plastic & nylon.

Get real - literally, get a real plant that will thrive, nurture rather than destroy your environment & look beautiful!

With what is in it, you could actually recreate that with fresh flowers quite cheaply, especially as much of the greenery would last and you only need a few flower stems.

At £135 you could do that quite a few times - by which time your artificial flowers will be faded and dusty, and you will probably feel like a change anyway.

For me part of the joy of flowers is the way they change, opening up, fading, softening - especially parrot tulips which become a completely different flower by the end of the week. I always work with a small vase of flowers on my desk and sometimes think they change during the course of an afternoon.

I have just discovered this thread, and I really need it. The world is trying to make me buy these M&S barrel jeans Mid Rise Barrel Jeans | M&S | M&S. I met a friend on Saturday who looked fabulous in them and raved about how comfy they are. Now every time I open social media, there is someone else looking wonderful, and fashionable, and comfortable in their barrel jeans, and now I want them!

However, I have about a million pairs of jeans already and am on a mission to save every penny at the moment. I do not need these jeans - help me stay strong!

I'm convinced these will be a trend we look back and say "what were we even thinking!"

They make people look bandy-legged. I think we are a bit immune to that atm because it is fashionable but objectively I don't think it is a good look. There is a Charlie Chaplin feel - and the point for him was to make himself look comical! This will be like ruffled shirts for men in the 70s - "yeah baby!"

BIossomtoes · 02/02/2026 12:35

I think they’re here to stay for quite a while. They’re incredibly comfortable and haven’t made anyone including me look bandy. Mind you I’m knock kneed so it would be an absolute miracle of a garment that achieved that!

sylv165 · 02/02/2026 12:41

@blossomtoes I'm not sure you are helping de-influence me here 😂

I am also very short, so I fear the bandy-leg, comical look will only be enhanced on me!
