De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

This M&S jacket. All the photos of models are of them in gym wear and I don't do that so why does it appeal to me so much?

Looks like a bed jacket

The bottom oven on my double oven has just died. I feel I need an expensive pyrolytic oven to replace it. Please tell my why not.

The pyrolytic thing on mine blows my fuses.

It also doesn't clean it all, the glass for example isn't cleaned and that's the worst part anyway.

Get an air fryer!

I heard that Purdy and Fig stuff doesnt really work

Please help me out!

I am desperately in love with this skirt! I have so many tops it would go with, cardigans and I love the fabric.

I've been trying to deinfluence myself - I'm trying to lose the last bit of baby weight (what size would I buy?) and also I don't know when I would wear it. But I NEED it!

Edit to add - I can justify it because I haven't brought any new clothes for almost 2 years, and I know I would it would be loved and looked after for years

Edited

You are an evil genius op: this is so blatantly just a thread to encourage people to be brutal... so here goes.

@Goldpanther that skirt looks as if you have honking and extremely itchy case of Bacterial Vaginosis and have just torn your fanny to shreds with what you thought was a hasty, sneaky foof-scratch when the boss walked in and you whipped your hand away in a hurry.

Or you just had an illicit quickie with a colleague in the dark.

But more the itchy fanny imo.

ETA hope that helps!

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

Dark chocolate is a good dietary source of magnesium. No brainer!

I would really love to buy this Dior nail varnish (sorry for the long link, I don't know how you make them shorter!)

I only wear clear or tinted varnish, I tried it in the shop and it looked only the tiniest bit different to the one I was already wearing (maybe even too pink), I would never consider paying that much for a nail varnish except I've been suckered into people telling me how great it is.

I keep thinking it will be like the Dior Glow lip oil which is just better and more luxurious than any other lip oil I've used.

Someone please talk me down, I'm trying to pay off my debt for goodness sake I don't NEED it!

I’m a polish hoarder so tried them all and it looks good but chips and peels off within 12 hours. So does the Essie one. But the nails inc one is identical to Dior and doesn’t chip

I really want to blow a large part of my kitchen budget on a fancy tap that does boiling water AND sparkling water.

Don't - it makes tea taste weird and it doesn't get hot enough. That said, if burglars wanted to torture you for the code to your safe, it probably would be hot enough to scald you.

I want a Dyson airwrap! Tell me it’s a waste of money, and it isn’t as good as everyone makes out!!

I got one for Christmas and I’m in love and I’ve had the beauty works, diva, hersheons, Sally’s, cloud 9. Literally every wand imaginable and the Dyson truly is elite. Although hotter than I imagined

soupyspoon · 29/01/2026 00:11

Dare I say I love VW stuff and that skirt...

Also I thought PP above was a hoarder who was Polish. Didnt understand for a bit.

WyrdyGrob · 29/01/2026 00:12

@CoralTrout that jumper looks too much like a Gansey. I’d want to ask if you’d got any fresh mackerel today?https://www.flamboroughmanor.co.uk/flamboroughmarine/ganseys.htm

(i love the history and storytelling around a Gansey, but they are itchy as fuck)

Nope! Comment not allowed. This is a negative space only.

This thread is a brilliant idea. Please someone tell me why I don't need Guerlain L'Heure Bleu.
The Vivienne Westwood skirt is just too bunchy. A darker tartan might have worked better.
(Can't think of anything negative to say about the blue linen top!)

The blue hour. In the singular. One hour alone. Can you imagine how inconvenient that could be? What if you mistakenly wore it during yellow hour? It'd be like wearing your Friday knickers on a Tuesday.

Ditto: no compliments please.

(and we all love VW but with that particular skirt she was havin' a larf)

soupyspoon · 29/01/2026 00:14

The blue linen top whoever asked about that, is awful. Insipid, shapeless and not in a nice way. Bland. Nothing about it at all.

I have a rush of blood to the head: I feel certain I might be about to uncover my main talent.

Viviennemary · 29/01/2026 00:17

I want a nice handbag. Only because everyone whos agnyone on here seems to have a collection of mulberry bags. Not a mulberry (too dear) but one a bit cheaper under say £450. But I dont need to spend as much and I'm resisting it.

Barrellturn · 28/01/2026 21:40

If you need magnesium then check out the different types. There is one type (citrate??) that gave me diarrhea for the entire time I was taking it.

ooh that was quite a good de-influencing comment.

TeamToeBeans · 29/01/2026 00:20

@Buffypaws Get the cat, if you’re already fostering what difference does it make? A big one, to him / her. Use the money you’ve saved on fillers & robovacs to buy cat treats.

No offence but it's hideous. If it was Primark it would be justifiable but half a grand, nope.

Yeah it looks like the item they make as a seasonal joke as a team-bonding exercise and the staff member who sells it wins the Selling Iceboxes to Eskimos Prize.
