De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

I would really love to buy this Dior nail varnish (sorry for the long link, I don't know how you make them shorter!)

I only wear clear or tinted varnish, I tried it in the shop and it looked only the tiniest bit different to the one I was already wearing (maybe even too pink), I would never consider paying that much for a nail varnish except I've been suckered into people telling me how great it is.

I keep thinking it will be like the Dior Glow lip oil which is just better and more luxurious than any other lip oil I've used.

Someone please talk me down, I'm trying to pay off my debt for goodness sake I don't NEED it!

The link isn't working but sorry op, I can't talk you out of it. I have Dior nail glow. It's my favourite Polish ever and worth every penny.

Perfect! Thank you - I can’t unsee that now! 🤣

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 21:48

The skirt is very Nora Batty.

The fat face blouse is rather dull and not a high-impact piece. And the quality will be pretty average for the price.

The Dior nail polish is sold at a huge markup. It's no better than one that costs a quarter the price so you're basically just paying for the name. Won't you therefore feel a bit foolish every time you wear it?

I'm so glad this thread is taking off and hope it will be of use to people!

Ok please don’t hate me - it’s hideously expensive but I love this necklace so much, please talk me down!

It is hideously expensive, but looks really cheap.

Elizabeta · 28/01/2026 21:49

@Sixseventeen my mum had one like that which came out on every summer holiday of the 90s. It’s…. fine. Do better for yourself than fine.

@SlothSpiritAnimalthat will be horribly uncomfortable to wear, and look like you bought it in the Tower of London gift shop.

@Whowhatwerewolf I can’t help, that’s a great skirt (ignoring the price). If you’ve find a dupe post it here!

It looks really tacky to me, like knock off Pandora.

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 21:50

The necklace looks like something a child would wear. On an adult I'd be thinking "escaped mental patient?"

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

I tried magnesium capsules. They were enormous and I couldnt swallow them so I tried opening them and mixing them with yoghurt. They tasted disgusting. And they didnt help me sleep.

l like this pinafore. So versatile! So cute!

But it doesn't suit my shape. I know this because I have read the reviews.

I'm pretty sure you can get magnesium sprays fairly cheaply. Is it just sea water? No idea. Anyway, you spray it on your feet and apparently it helps you sleep better. I think you can spray it anywhere and it absorbs somehow.

Snugglemonkey · 28/01/2026 21:49

It is hideously expensive, but looks really cheap.

It's gold plated. It would be tremendous fun at no more than £40. £990 is ridiculous.

LucieChardon · 28/01/2026 21:59

@scoobydeedoo try this? at a fraction of the price:
https://www.boots.com/rimmel-london-nail-nurse-2-in-1-base-coat-and-strengthener-10333034

Gives a tiny tint of colour, and claims to strengthen nails. I use 1 coat when I'm super lazy but want to have shiny nails.

NotMeNoNo · 28/01/2026 22:02

@scoobydeedoo I can help you on the Dior Nail Glow because I bought it. Looks beautiful. Starts wearing off in a few hours.

Twattergy · 28/01/2026 22:03

With all of these my suggestion would be you can find the same or very similar items on Vinted. Especially the tartan skirt, which is NOT worth £550. You could get a local tailor to make you that skirt for less than £100 or find a second hand dupe for £15 or less.

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 22:03

@Allthesnowallthetime that type of fabric picks up lint and dust really easily. It also looks pretty shapeless and can't really be dressed up.

I googled. It looks a bit like you're dating a lumberjack, had a toilet accident at his house and put his shirt on backwards as a skirt to cover your shame.

It's also very clueless inspired which is almost over (sadly) as a trend and then you'll look like supergran (if you are unaware then Google image search and the skirt won't tempt you any longer)

It's dry clean only so a massive hassle and looks like it'll bobble to buggery if it goes near a washing machine.

Helpful?

Oh, you’re good!!
