De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Ok, I am being very tempted by wee sachets of a magnesium drink becsuse most adults are deficient in it and taking it will help me sleep better. Or it might be nonsense. Do I need to try these?

I don’t know about drink but I took magnesium tablets for a couple of months and got a very annoying eyelid twitch for my trouble. My insomnia didn’t improve either.

Buffypaws · 28/01/2026 22:42

I used to be obsessed with magnesium and took it and had a spray. Then I read the spray doesn’t get absorbed. Years later I had a blood test and my magnesium was high anyway. So it was all a RUSE.

Hi. Please Please talk me out of buying this gorgeous jumper! I have 30 jumpers and cc debt....but it's so lovely 😍

i would wreck that neck with make up, and it’s too heavy for spring and summer and also looks itchy.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 28/01/2026 22:44

@scoobydeedoo, Essie hard to resist is a fraction of the cost and far superior.

It will be a race between the jumper bobbling and going into holes at the elbows. That’s what supersoft means: it also still might be itchy.

There will also be competition between all the neighbourhood clothes moths to find it and nibble any bits you’ve spilled food on.

If you are generously be-busted the combination of a high neckline and a raglan sleeve will not be flattering.

Spaceandco · 28/01/2026 22:47

I want a Dyson airwrap! Tell me it’s a waste of money, and it isn’t as good as everyone makes out!!

Would you consider this one instead?

https://www.sweatershop.com/aran-cable-knit-side-zip-army-green

its a nicer colour and you might get more wear out of it instead of a jumper. They are good quality also.

@goldpanther Your kids will just ruin it.

Under rated comment.

if you don’t know when you’ll wear it it’s because it’s totally unsuited to your life rn.

i’m having a real Vinted binge and I seem to believe it doesn’t count when it’s second hand which is obviously total nonsense.

I need to be deinfluenced from Vinted/thrifting/charity shops. It’s still unneeded , excess stuff - even if I’m saving it from landfill

Eat more dark chocolate covered brazils. Both are high in magnesium and much nicer.

I’m a firm believer in buying things that are beautiful, to last. That said, I used to trade vintage clothing so I’ve had a fair few designer brands through my hands, and Vivienne Westwood items don’t always have the quality or longevity you’d hope for for the price tag. Maybe the really old items have some beautiful stitching and fabric, but the newer items , not always.

Onceuponasunflower · 28/01/2026 21:21

@Goldpanther polyester cotton which is dry clean only doesn't sound very well made. I think the ruching would come out quickly so cost per wear would be high.

Poly anything in clothes is just a straight no for me now, makes life a lot easier. Anything made of plastic is out

ChocolateCinderToffee · 28/01/2026 22:50

Goodness. My Eufy cost about £150.

I like the look of Unfolded dresses, they claim to be more environmental by only having items made once ordered so less waste although this adds to delivery times. There is one dress I was looking at but the reviews are not brilliant, referring to poor quality fabric and not true to size. There are of course loads of very positive reviews!

I wonder if anyone has actually ordered something from them, I particularly like the Camilla dress but they are quite pricy for my budget so would want them to be decent quality.

If you have bought something, are they true to size or do I need to buy a bigger size? I think I’d need a size 22, I’ve lost weight recently but have not yet bought new clothes!

honeyfox · 28/01/2026 22:50

Lily and Fox wraps destroyed my nails after wearing them for a week or two. Unfortunately after just a few days with them on the first time, I loved them so much I bought loads more. Turns out some designs were ok and some were awful on the nails, must be the different chemicals in different patterns etc. All ended up in the bin.

katseyes7 · 28/01/2026 22:51

*Snugglemonkey *
I took magnesium glycinate for months, hoping it would help my sleep. It didn't.
It did, however, play havoc with my digestive system, to the point l was on the verge of being investigated for IBS or much worse.

Which righted itself within a day or two of me stopping taking it.

Snugglemonkey · 28/01/2026 22:11

Thanks. I might need to look at sprays. I am a bit sceptical about how much you would absorb from a spray though.

Quite a lot; skin is porous. How much orally would make it past stomach acid etc?

Holycowhowmuch · 28/01/2026 22:53

Looks like a rag. Sorry it just looks scruffy and tired.

Yes please! My assistant talked me out of a £700 robot vacuum… I still need talking out of fillers next month and not exactly a purchase but I quite want to adopt my one eyed foster cat 🐱 but I do have two already…

Adopt the cat. You’ll never regret it.

Yes, please can someone talk me out of buying this blouse? I’ve managed to kick my wine habit. Now I need to tackle my shopping habit.

Edited

never buy anything linen unless you want to spend the majority of your life ironing, but still look crumpled 2 mins after putting it on

Skinnysaluki · 28/01/2026 22:56

Maternityleavelady · 28/01/2026 22:51

Looks like a scrunched up tea towel to me!

Also! A spare £550 would buy many alternatives:

  • city break
  • cashmere sweater that goes with everything for winter
  • fab coat
  • 3 or more fabulous meals out plus babysitter

It's nonsense. Turn off the TV earlier and don't drink caffeine after 2pm.

I keep trying to buy new t-shirts both long and short sleeved and they are NEVER LONG ENOUGH. I should just give up and, well, I don't really know what. Always wear a jumper? Sew stuff on the bottom of them? Wear them tucked in (that doesn't work as they still pull up!).

I don't drink caffeine at all and rarely watch tv. I have a blue screen filter to make browsing more sleep friendly. I just am not a great sleeper and get woken by a toddler. So it would be good if my broken sleep was super high quality!
