De-influencing thread - reasons why NOT to buy things

1000 replies

Whowhatwerewolf · 28/01/2026 20:21

Like quite a few people on here I have been trying to reduce or eliminate buying new clothes or beauty treats in 2026. For the most part I've failed miserably but I'm going to keep trying. One thing that helps me greatly is being de-influenced from a purchase. Unfortunately I'm very easily influenced by advertisements but my saving grace is that I can be easily dissuaded from buying things also.

Recently two lovely posters (@Johanna and @Cortietat ) managed to stop me from buying overpriced Sweaty Betty pilates socks and a potentially somewhat wonky Eribé fair isle cardigan respectively by telling me what wasn't so great about these items. I'm so appreciative as this has saved me heaps of money. So I was wondering whether anyone else has anything they'd liked to be talked out of purchasing?

The idea is to post something on this thread that you're considering buying despite trying to save money via a no buy or low buy commitment or simply because you're not sure about a purchase. Other posters respond to say why you shouldn't buy. If anyone thinks what you're considering getting is the best thing since sliced bread and you should definitely proceed they keep quiet about it please as this isn't the thread for that.

So...is anyone in?

Sprays are amazing. Magnesium was recommend to me for breastfeeding aversion and it worked like a charm - I think sprays are easier to absorb. The breastfeeding group advice was to spray on the backs of your knees.

Magnesium's far better absorbed through the skin. Zero digestive effects. Best of all, you simply stop absorbing it once your body's got enough. As mentioned above, Epsom salts (bath salts) are very cheap. If you don't have baths, you can do foot soaks or use one of the sprays/creams. Dead easy to make a solution and put it in a spray bottle!

Ok please don’t hate me - it’s hideously expensive but I love this necklace so much, please talk me down!

Honestly looks like something you'd buy from a car boot sale and you'd be £899 up!

I definitely do not need another wool coat - I have 3, but i love this style and colour:

The colour is a bit diarrhea-ish.

On my to buy list right now is a Moka pot and also a wool duvet - fed up of getting sweaty from microfibre duvets!

please deinfluence me! I’m sick of the price of nespresso pods going up and up and up

Please help me out!

I am desperately in love with this skirt! I have so many tops it would go with, cardigans and I love the fabric.

I've been trying to deinfluence myself - I'm trying to lose the last bit of baby weight (what size would I buy?) and also I don't know when I would wear it. But I NEED it!

Edit to add - I can justify it because I haven't brought any new clothes for almost 2 years, and I know I would it would be loved and looked after for years

Edited

I've bought a car for the price of this skirt.

You broke the thread! That is indeed lovely

OK. Deep breath... I think it's too short for the height of the model. What height are you? The belt will get lost in no time or will end up falling down a public toilet. It looks lovely hanging straight on a skinny waif with no figure, but doesn't look like it's cut for curves.

Please can someone deinfluence me from it too!

I am a similar age and build to Claudia (who wears this) and think I will be coveting this kilt till I die. Too expensive but…

Edited

I've got my DD's school uniform one if you want it? Not wearing it is a hill she will die on. You'd only need to add that kilt pin.

It's the colour of poo. This has the look of slightly curry influenced day after diarrhoea.

With that tiny body charm and a normal human head you’ll look like Stewie Griffin.

My DM had a great rule of thumb that I try to remember for impulsive sale purchases - if you wouldn't be prepared to pay full price for it, then it's not a good buy. It (sometimes) works for me. While I'm on, please can people dissuade me from buying the GLP-1 Colon Broom stuff that I'm bombarded with on SM? I'm sure it'll have the same effect as the Dragons' Den rubbish that I spent £££ on last year!

My favourite when out shopping IRL is “if it haunts me, I’ll come back” works a treat especially when you physically can’t be arsed to drive back into town and park up for it even if it did haunt you. Online not so effective!

It looks so cheap! I'd expect to find it on a knock off stall at the local market amongst polyester tops and shoes that disintegrate in the rain.

Not Pantone's 'Colour of the Year', is it... 😂

Colon Broom sounds like someone saying “Should I just stick a brush ip
my arse as well?”!

Thank you, though I love brown as it's more gentle on blonds than black or grey...

Excellent note earlier about losing the belt and dropping it in loo!

I have a moka pot and it's great - sorry! Better than my Nespresso and so much less waste, plus the coffee grounds are really good in my compost and I can take it camping if I'm ever forced to go.

Thanks for this. I do believe it is key but it's people around me telling me not to bother. Our house is lovely and a great price but it was on the market for so long that I genuinely believe the only reason could have been the kitchen.
I will bear your suggestions in mind!

If it's a home you'll be in for years.... then deffo worth it.
The one in the house am moving into is navy blue cupboards. Oh lordy!

BIossomtoes · 29/01/2026 10:35

Nothing wrong with a navy blue kitchen. I love ours.

Put me off buying this please! I saw a bargain one on vinted but it sold while I was dithering. I definitely can't justify it at full price but love the pink flecked colour.

aranwoollenmills.com/en-gb/products/brackloon-tweed-roll-neck-ladies-sweater-pink

I could knit you one pretty much identical to it for about £30!

Ha! I see lots of women out and about in coats like this with wide legged trousers, and I think they look like they are still wearing their dressing gowns and pyjamas.

I knew that I would upset someone!
Navy blue is ok if like that (I prefer more traditional units but fun tiles), but it's with dark green wall tiles and mottled grey floor tiles. It's very dark.

Bet it's not with dark green wall tiles and dark, mottled grey floor tiles though?!
